F-1 Essentials

Complete a full course of study each fall and spring semester - 12 hours. 

  • Keep your passport valid at all times. 

  • Don't let your I-20 expire. 

  • Never work off-campus without approval from the International Advisor. 

  • Don't work more than 20 hours per week on campus while school is in session. 

  • Have your I-20 signed by the International Advisor before traveling out of the country if you plan to return. (This includes trips to Canada and Mexico) 

  • Get a new I-20 whenever you change degree level, graduation date,  major, or institutions. 

  • Use the I-20 issued by the school you will be attending when you enter the country. 

  • Report any change of address to the International Advisor.  

  • Keep the I-94 card (issued at your first port of entry into the US) stapled in your passport.  

  • Always carry the student copy of each I-20 issued to you.

There are exceptions to these rules. 
See the International Advisor if you have ANY questions  BEFORE you do something different.

REMEMBER ------ It is always easier to stay in status than to get back in status!
