Today is deadline for insurance enrollment
Debbie Dutch Kelley, Human Resources, says the deadline to return purple election forms to indicate their choices for health, dental and vision insurance for 2010 is 5 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 30.
Office Hours in the H.R. office in Room 217 of Hearnes Hall are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"Before coming by, we ask that you look over the materials provided to be more familiar with the plans," Debbie says.
Cafeteria Plan enrollment for Flexible Spending Accounts is available online.
The cafeteria plan materials are being sent to employees by postal or email. Due to the success of the on-line enrollment last year, ASI is again using this format. Simply go to www.mocafe.com click on “Enrollment” and follow the instructions. HR reports that many employees participate in the Flexible Spending Accounts offered that allows them to put pre-taxed money aside (thus reducing their tax liability) for later reimbursement of out-of-pocket child care or healthcare expenses.
Although ASI has a later deadline of 12/1/2009, it is recommended to take care of this enrollment early so as to not overlook it. The MO Café informational booklet is also posted on the HR web page.
Today's Brown Bag
The Brown Bag lunch/lecture for faculty and staff for today, Friday, Oct. 30, will feature Kexi Liu, Music, Director of Orchestra/Strings. Kexi will present: "Two Musical Journeys: China."
Kexi will chronicle separate trips to China made this spring by the Southern Symphony Orchestra and Suzuki Violin Academy. The orchestra members visited a variety of major cities and performed with the symphony orchestra of Henan Song and Dance Company in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province. This trip featured the first-ever joint concert by the Southern Symphony Orchestra and a professional orchestra. The program included masterpieces of Chinese and Western music. The Suzuki students performed on the magnificent Great Wall in Beijing, at the Wild Goose Pagoda Musical Fountain in Xi'an, and on the beautiful Li River in Guilin.
The luncheon will be held at noon in Room 202 in the Art Department (Enter through the main door. The room is immediately to the left, opposite the gallery).
Bring your own brown bag lunch to each session and enjoy an opportunity to hear about some of the research and creative works being accomplished at Missouri Southern. For additional information contact Frank A. Pishkur, Art, at ext. 9735.
AAUP elects officers
The MSSU chapter of the American Association of University Professors held its fall meeting on Friday, Oct. 23, in Billingsly Student Center. The provisional officers reported on activities of the past five months, including John Knapp's visit to the AAUP conference.
The group elected permanent officers for the coming year. They include Stephen Schiavo, CIS, President; Cliff Toliver, English, Vice President; Holly McSpadden, English, Secretary; and Gerry Schlink, Biology/Environmental Health, Treasurer. Bill Kumbier, English, and Pedro Talavera, Foreign Language, will return as officers at large.
Also on the executive board are John Knapp, Physical Science, as past president, and Faculty Senate President Roger Chelf, Physical Science. The outgoing officers reported that our membership approximately doubled over the past few months; and a number of new attendees at this meeting said they too would join the chapter.
Members discussed our plans for the coming year, to include social functions, such as a Winter Ball, and faculty development functions, such as a seminar on performing research at Southern. Other topics raised included more sweeping issues such as dorms for married students and for single parents, child care on campus for students and employees, fund raising for scholarly travel and other activities not augmented with budgeted funding.

Poe was born in Boston in 1809, so the station will exult in the occult of Poe's writings with a two-hour extravaganza from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. this evening.
Jeff Skibbe, KXMS, says
Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone do most of the honors, as usual, and we will punctuate their prose and POEsy performances with extra eerie music from the KXMS library. To listen, visit http://www.mssu.edu/kxms.
Sharing scholarship & research ideas
A panel discussion on the topic, “Doing Scholarship and Research at a Teaching Institution," will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tues., Nov. 10 in the Reading Room on the fourth floor of Spiva Library.

Following the brief talks, the session will be opened for discussion and questions. If you are interested in pursuing scholarship and research, sharing ideas about your own work, or simply talking with other faculty about the topic, please join us.
