State-of-the-art bookstore opens in BSC

Bookstore Manager Greg Needham and MSSU President Dr. Bruce Speck cut the ribbon on the new bookstore in the Billingsly Student Center

A new state-of-the-art bookstore opened in the newly refurbished Billingsly Student Center on Aug. 6. Faculty, staff, the news media and members of the public attended the grand opening in the lobby area just outside the bookstore on the main floor of Billingsly Student Center.

The Joplin Rotary Club held its regular luncheon in the Lion’s Den in BSC in order to attend the 12:30 p.m. grand opening ceremonies. The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Representatives from AT&T, which contributed $100,000 for technology in the new facility, were on hand for the ceremony. Part of that new technology is an inventory control management system (EAS Electronic Article Surveillance System), located at the main entrance of the bookstore.

The bookstore was previously located on the lower level of BSC, but is now more easily accessible on the main floor. Retail space has grown from the previous 1,600 sq. ft. to more than 3,000 sq. ft.

Designed by Michael Lopez Designs, Inc., the bookstore offers a much more modern shopping experience for students, parents, alumni and visitors, according to Greg Needham, Manager.

Walking through BSC’s main entrance, students, visitors and shoppers are greeted with a sparkling view of 54 panels of glass from floor to ceiling. Throughout the new store almond-colored merchandising fixtures are accented with warm cherry end caps

In addition to traditional bookstore fare, shoppers at the new facility are finding new merchandising displays, special retail lighting fixtures, and, probably most important to students, a wider selection of candies and snacks. The bookstore also offers a selection of magazines and movies and two flat screen LCD panels for news, information and entertainment.

A grand opening for the Beimdiek Student Recreation Center is being scheduled. The MSSU Health Center is moving and will be closed from Aug. 3-19. The new Willcoxon Health Center, located in the Beimdiek Recreation Center, will open on Aug. 20, according to Doug Carnahan, Dean of Students.

History grant awarded

The Social Science Department at Missouri Southern is pleased to announce that the History faculty, in cooperation with the Miller R-2 School District and the Southwest Center for Educational Excellence (SCEE), has been awarded a “Teaching American History” (TAH) grant by the United States Department of Education for the project: “Preserving America’s Midwest Heritage.”

The Teaching American History program is designed to raise student achievement by improving teachers’ knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history. Accordingly, history faculty members will hold seminars and workshops for area primary and secondary history teachers in school districts affiliated with SCEE.

This is the sixth TAH grant with which the Missouri Southern History faculty has been associated. These grants have brought more than five million dollars in funding to Missouri Southern and the school districts of Southwest Missouri.

Wanted: Friendship Families

Missouri Southern expects 65 new international students to take classes on campus this fall. The MSSU campus is proud to share the campus with them.

These students also need to experience everyday life in Missouri. Are you interested in having an international student over for lunch, dinner, once or twice a month, a semester?

Would you like one of the students to go fishing, hiking, camping or take part in other activities with you and your family? Have you always been interested in foreign countries like Chile, Japan, Germany or other nations the students call home?

If sharing a small part of your life, time and heart with a fine international student is on your wish list, contact Betty Willems, International English, at: willems-b@mssu.edu.

Fighting back against
IDENTITY THEFT

Identity theft occurs when someone uses personal information, including names, Social Security or credit card numbers or other data without permission to commit fraud or other crimes. The Federal Trade Commission estimates as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year.

A new Red Flag Policy has been created for Missouri Southern. The Red Flag Policy is used to help our campus community take the steps necessary to prevent identity theft, it also includes ways to identify and detect the relevant signs (red flags) of identity theft.

Included in the campus policy are some computer-related issues that should be addressed by all campus employees in protecting students and themselves.

Alicia Hughes, Student Accounts, says details on the policy, which took affect Aug. 1, are currently posted on the Business Office Web site, and will be posted on various other University web sites (i.e. - Financial Aid, Admissions, etc.) in the near future.
