Book Store open again after morning damage

A morning storm swept through the Four-State area on Friday, May 8, uprooting trees and downing power lines.

At Missouri Southern State University, the storm resulted in the collapse of a portion of the Missouri Southern Book Store in the Mansion Annex on the west side of campus. The area of the building affected was separate from the area used by students for purchases and other business.

Students returning books now may take them to the MSSU Bookstore again.

Students returning books are being asked to take them to Kuhn Hall, Room 105 where a temporary office has been set up for book returns and the purchase of test supplies.

Student Services reports that the Lion's Den in Billingsly Student Center will be closed for the day.

Other damage includes the following:

  • A tree fell on an electrical line near the Ecumenical Ministry Ministry building near campus.
  • A tent designed for student activities near the Residence Halls was damaged.
  • Trees were down and roof damage took place on other buildings.
  • Health Science Building construction materials and roof decking materials were disturbed.
  • Pit covers at Hughes Stadium were damaged or destroyed.
  • Low-level lighting resulted in damage from blowing debris.

52nd Commencement Saturday, May 16

Missouri Southern State University will conduct its 52nd Commencement ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. and 12 noon Saturday, May 16 at  Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
               
The 9:30 a.m. ceremony will include graduates from School of Arts and Sciences, School of Technology and Associate Degree recipients

The 12 noon ceremony will include the School of Business Administration, School of  Education and students receiving Bachelor of General Studies degrees.
               
The speaker for the 52nd Commencement will be Richard Page, Superintendent of Schools for the Neosho School District in Neosho, Mo.

Boots to Books

The "Boots to Books" Open House for U.S. Veterans will take place from 3 – 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 19 in Anderson Justice Center Auditorium

The open house is designed to inform Veterans of educational and financial aid benefits available at Missouri Southern and other educational institutions in the state.

Campus departments, including Financial Aid; Admissions; Career Services; Advising, Counseling and Testing Services; Disability Services and others will be represented to discuss how they can help Veterans return to the classroom. Representatives from Veterans programs also will be available to provide information.

Suzuki students to play

Suzuki Violin Academy students of Kexi Liu, Paul Carlson and Carolann Martin, Music, will perform two recitals on Saturday, May 9, at Corley Auditorium. The first one starts at 1:30 pm and the second one 3 pm. The recitals are open to the public and admission is free.

Looking for a job is not easy even in the best of times.  Please encourage students to attend this workshop.  MSSU’s Career Services can help them plan the shortest and most effective job search possible in the current tough job market.

Topics covered will show them how to develop a targeted job search strategy using multiple resources to help them identify potential job opportunities.  We will also share salary negotiation secrets that employers use which all job applicants should know.

Exam Cram provides tutoring

Are your students stressed out? Do they need help cramming for finals? Exam Cram is the answer.

Exam Cram, slated for May 4 - 9, provides tutoring sessions including answer to specific questions or simple reviews. Be sure to let your students know about these valuable sessions.

Psychology: Monday, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Writing: Tuesday, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. & Thursday, 8 a.m.– 10 a.m. & 2:30 p.m.– 4 p.m.

Music performances airing on KGCS-TV

KGCS will air a number of Spring musical performances presented by the MSSU music department. They will air throughout May and into the summer months. A new night of local programming has been added to the KGCS schedule, to provide an opportunity for viewers to see the musical performances.

Each Thursday night at 8 p.m. will feature a program called "Missouri Southern Musical Performance." It will feature the recordings of the various music groups recorded this semester. Musical performances will also air at various times, Sunday through Wednesday nights.

The schedule set so far includes the following:

  • Thurs., May 7 - 8 p.m. - Spring Piano Festival performance by Denine LeBlanc
  • Sun., May 10 - 8 p.m. - Jazz Orchestra Spring Showcase
  • Tues., May 12 - 8 p.m. - Southern Symphony Orchestra

Relay for Life May 30

MSSU’s Relay for Life Team is getting ready for the American Cancer Association’s Webb City Relay for Life. This event will take place in Jack King Park (at the Praying Hands) from noon - midnight on Saturday, May 30.

This year’s theme is in recognition of the 25th anniversary of this event and booths will be decorated using a TV show or movie within the last 25 years. Our team booth’s theme will be The Lion King - Join the Pride!

Our team can always use the help, so if you would like to help during this event, please contact Lora Burch, Career Services, at ext. 3138. Even if you can't help, please do consider bringing your family to the event to participate in a fun event for a very worthy cause. There will be food, games, bouncy toys, entertainment, and much much more!

Along with this event, the team is selling tickets for numerous items:

  • Luminaries - You can decorate this white paper bag in honor of loved ones who have battled cancer and are no longer with us. The bags will be placed around the walking trail at event. $5 each
  • Stars - Purchase these in memory of someone who has died of cancer. All will be hung at MSSU’s booth during the event. $1 each
  • Moons - Purchase these in honor of someone who has had or is currently battling cancer. All will be hung at MSSU’s booth during the event. $1 each

Gilmartin presents “Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement”

Nationally-known law enforcement behavioral scientist Dr. Kevin Gilmartin delivered the program “Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement” Friday, April 24 in the Justice Center Auditorium.

The presentation was presented by Missouri Southern State University Criminal Justice and supported by the Joplin Police Department, Newton County Sheriff's Office, and Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Gilmartin spent 20 years working in law enforcement in Tucson, Arizona. He supervised the Hostage Negotiations Team and the Behavioral Sciences Unit. He is a former recipient of the International Association of Chiefs of Police-Parade Magazine, National Police Officer Citation Award for contributions during hostage negotiations. He consults with public safety and law enforcement agencies nationally in the U.S. and in Canada.

He is guest instructor at the FBI Academy’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Institute (LEEDS and EDI). He is an adjunct instructor at Cornell University’s New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations, the University of Massachusetts Police Leadership Institute, Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga., and Sam Houston State University’s Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas.

He is retained as a consultant to several Federal agency national critical incident response teams. He holds a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Arizona and is a licensed psychologist in the State of Arizona

Lemony Snicket featured in 88.7KXMS Mother's Day Tribute

Lemony Snicket will narrates his "The Composer is Dead" with music by composer Nathaniel Stookey in a musical salute to mothers as Southern Serenade presents an hour of musical delights for their kids tonight at 5 p.m. on 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International.

Jeff Skibbe, KXMS, is host. Also, "Tubby the Tuba," will be narrated by Stephen Fry, and Garrison Keillor will talk aboutMother's Day and recites "To My Mother" by Wendell Berry, from a collection entitled Entries

Staff Senate Elections

The creation of a Staff Senate is less than a week away. Elections are scheduled for May 11- 15 at the following locations and times:

  • May 11- Security Office (7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.)
  • May 12- Library Coffee Shop area circulation desk (7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.)
  • May 13- Kuhn Hall- Learning Center (7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.)

FACULTY/STAFF

Jeanie Cozens, Teacher Education, attended the International Reading Association (IRA) in Minn., May 2 - 7. Part of the week was spent at the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)-IRA Institute. Yearly participation is required to continue as a reviewer.

Janice Dunaway, Respiratory Care Program, has received an Outstanding Leadership Award for her part in the Smokebusters program. The leadership award was presented at a meeting held in Columbia on April 22 in Columbia, Mo. Smokebusters is a teen tobacco use prevention program and her counties included Barton, Jasper, Newton, and McDonald Counties in southwest MIssouri.

Charles Nodler, Spiva Library, attended the Midwest Archives Conference in St. Louis, April 30- May 2.
