Tree dedication during noon hour today The Sustainability Committee will dedicate a tree to the Missouri Southern State University Board of Governors.. The tree dedication for the Board will be held at 12:40 p.m. The campus community is invited. Board members will attend the dedication, located behind Webster Hall toward the intersection of Newman and Duquesne Roads, past the satellite dishes, according to Steve Smith, Social Sciences. MSSU to celebrate Administrative Professionals Day A cookout at the Pavilion to celebrate Administrative Professionals Day will take place from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22. The cookout is open to all staff who sent in RSVPs by Wednesday of this week. A drawing for door prizes will be held at 12:30 p.m. Chad Murphy, Custodial Services, Al Stadler, Information Services, and Rob Yust, Business Affairs, will grill brats, burgers and hotdogs to perfection. SJO plans Spring Showcase Concert
The Missouri Southern Jazz Orchestra (SJO) invites the community to attend its Spring Showcase Concert featuring special guest artist, saxophonist Heath Jones. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m.on Thursday, April 23 in Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall. This concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. Jones is the Director of Jazz Studies at Oklahoma Christian University in Oklahoma City. He will perform a wide variety of selections with the Southern Jazz Orchestra. They will include North Beach Breakdown, by John Oddo; Poet, by Mike Loveless (this is a tribute to the memory of trumpeter/band leader Don Ellis); and Don Menza’s modern classic for big band, Groovin’ Hard. This performance by the Southern Jazz Orchestra is dedicated to memory of Russ Holden. Holden was a long time supporter and frequent guest of the band program at Missouri Southern. This performance by Heath Jones is being graciously sponsored by Larry McIntire, D.O., and Kent McIntire, D.O., of the McIntire Ear Nose & Throat Center in Joplin. The SJO is under the direction of Jeff Macomber, Music. This concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. Over 900 students from 35 high schools represented all 4 states. All first place winners received $300 scholarships to MSSU. Beverly Block, Business, presented awards in Taylor Auditorium to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners. Sweepstakes trophies were presented in 19 events along with Dean's Performance Awards. First-Place team trophy for debaters Missouri Southern State University's Speech and Debate Squad recently took part in the Lincoln Douglas Open Championships (LDOC) at Drury University in Springfield, Mo from April 10-12. Missouri Southern finished with the LDOC first place team sweepstakes trophy. At the tournament in Lincoln-Douglas (LD) debate, Whitney Hart, senior Political Science/Communication major from Lamar, finished 5-2 in the preliminary rounds and went all the way to the final before dropping the championship round and finishing second. Valerie Melton, junior Public Relations major from Mt. Vernon, and Rayce Lashley, freshman Speech Communication major from Carthage, also qualified for elimination rounds but both were defeated in the quarterfinal round bracket. The MSSU forensics squad is now counting down the hours to the NFA national tournament scheduled for this weekend at Missouri State University, according to Kelly B. Larson, Forensics. Around the World in 80 Minutes Everyone is cordially invited to join Missouri Southern Symphony Orchestra for a musical journey around the world on Tuesday, April 28. The music will take you from America to England, Romania, Russia, China, and Spain. Folk songs, folk dances, and contemporary music of these countries will be presented. The concert, “Around the World in 80 Minutes”, starts at 7:30 p.m. in Taylor Performing Arts Center on the MSSU campus. Admission is free. National History Day State winners move on Paul Teverow, History, says several area students distinguished themselves in the recent National History Day in Missouri contest, held April 4 in Columbia, Missouri. National History Day in Missouri (NHDMO) is a yearlong history education program, sponsored by The State Historical Society of Missouri and the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia at The University of Missouri. It forms part of National History Day, a nationwide program which since 1974 has encouraged young people to explore history and has taught them to understand historical issues, ideas, people and events. Participants conduct in-depth research on individual topics related to an annual theme and present their findings in one of several formats -- exhibit, performance, documentary, web site, or research paper -- designed to foster creativity and imagination. These presentations are evaluated at a series of local, state and national contests. The 2009 History Day theme is "The Individual in History." The 2009 state contest included 520 students from 85 schools, all award-winners at their respective regional contests. The 6 top entries from each category competed in final rounds to select Missouri’s delegates to the National contest June 14- 18 at the University of Maryland-College Park. Six entries that advanced from the March 6 Joplin regional contest were among Missouri’s delegates and alternates. Results are available at http://www.mssu.edu/news/2009/state_historyday_spring09.html. Earth Day celebration dinner April is the grand finale of Sodexho's Campus Dining’s 2008-2009 Promotion Series. Michael Wonderly, Sodexho, says the event will take a global scale with a celebration of the environmental. "The event for April is all about keeping our planet vibrant and alive, and maintaining our natural resources so they are available to the generations that follow," Wonderly says. "Join us in Mayes Dining Hall from 4:30 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 for an Earth Day event featuring great food, fantastic prizes, and fun with all of your friends." Faculty and staff are invited to the Eco-Etiquette Dinner. The cost for the dinner is an affordable $6. The menu includes Asian pepper steak, coconut rice, crab rangoon, oriental vegetables, chicken caesar wraps, grilled chicken & marinated vegetable kabobs. Two enter Regional Media Hall of Fame Two local media professionals were honored Wednesday, April 15 as the newest inductees into the Regional Media Hall of Fame at Missouri Southern. The awards honor professionals who have made an impact regionally throughout their career. This year's award recipients are Dave Berry from Community Publishers and Danny Thomas, from KOAM-TV Dave Berry, vice president of Community Publishers, Inc., oversees the company's eight Missouri newspapers. He is a 1975 graduate of Missouri State University. He has served as the publisher of the Bolivar Herald-Free Press since 1985. Berry is past president of the Missouri Press Association and past Region 7 director of the National Newspaper Association. Danny Thomas, President and General Manager of KOAM-TV, also attended Missouri Southern. He has been with KOAM for 22 years. Thomas has served on the CBS Marketing Board and as Chairman of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. The awards were developed after the Pioneer Broadcaster Award, presented by the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern. That award recognizes significant pioneering efforts in broadcasting. Honors Convocation April 29 The Annual Honors Convocation at Missouri Southern will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 29 in Taylor Performing Arts Center at MSSU. Students will be recognized as outstanding in their academic departments. Students receiving special awards of recognition, in addition to Outstanding Graduate Awards, will be introduced. Graduates from the Honors Program and Alpha Chi members will also be recognized. Following the ceremony the students and their families will attend a reception in the lobby of Taylor Performing Arts Center. Exit interviews Two more nights of One-Acts What happens when you ask a class full of beginning directors to write a play? What happens when you ask those novice playwrights to direct their own work? Upward Reflections: A Festival of Student-Directed One Act Plays will continue through tomorrow night in the Bud Walton Theatre. The plays are rated “M” for mature audiences only. There may be explicit language and adult situations. Admission is free. Reservations are required for the Festival due to the limited seating capacity. Foreign Language Field Day Tuesday, April 21 Piano Festival features Denine LeBlanc
The Music Department will hold the third program in its Spring Piano Festival 2009 later this month. The Festival includes performances by several musicians this semester. The next program features pianist Denine LeBlanc. Denine LeBlanc is instructor of Piano in the Preparatory Department at the University of Louisville School of Music. She is an Arts and Humanities teacher at Coleridge-Taylor Montessori Elementary School in Louisville. This past summer, LeBlanc toured France and Italy playing concerts featuring traditional repertoire and new music by Kentucky composers from her compact disc, entitled “The Sun Shines Bright.” In collaboration with Rachel Grimes, a Louisville composer and pianist, Dr. LeBlanc is a co-recipient of grants from the University of Louisville Women’s Center, the Kentucky Foundation for Women, and the Kentucky Arts Council. LeBlanc is Past President of the Greater Louisville Music Teachers Association and of the Kentucky Music Teachers Association. LeBlanc has taught and performed at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan and has worked as a collaborative pianist for the Advanced Vocal Institute at the famed Interlochen Arts Camp. Vierumäki instructors at MSSU Tomi Paalanen and Kimmo Kantosalo, instructors from the world-renown Vierumäki Sports Center of Finland, visited Missouri Southern this week. Paalanen received his BSE in Physical Education from MSSU in 2001. Vierumäki is a village located in the Finnish city of Heinola in the Province of Southern Finland. The Sport Institute of Finland in Vierumäki is a versatile center of education, leisure and sports. Missouri Southern offers students the ability to study at the Vierumäki Sports Center. On Wednesday they gave a presentation on fitness and weight training in the Student Life Center TV Room, followed by a discussion on Finland’s role in the global society. They also talked about exchange program between MSSU and Vierumäki. Yesterday, Paalen and Kantosalo were the guests of MSSU President Bruce Speck at the Joplin Rotary Club for a noon-hour lunch and presentation. Their time at MSSU was capped with an appearance at "Strikeout Cancer Night” on Thursday. Paalanen and Kantosalo attended the Kinesiology Club/All Athlete Event at the Softball Complex. Jeanie Cozens, Teacher Education, presented at the Spring 2009 Missouri Association for Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE) Conference on April 2 in Jefferson City. The presentation titled, "Bringing Technology to Reading Instruction: Using an Electronic Reading Workshop in a Literacy Methods Course," shared preservice teachers' experiences using eBooks and a social network to respond to reading in the content area.
