Southern to end tennis program

The Missouri Southern State University administration and the Athletics Department have announced that the women’s tennis program will be dropped at the end of the current season.

Six players are on the roster and the team is managed by part-time coach Larry McGregor, who had already informed University officials that he was leaving the team at the end of the season.

Missouri Southern will continue to field teams in football, baseball, softball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s track and field and cross country, and women’s soccer.

The University has implemented a number of cost-savings measures and this step is expected to reduce expenditures by approximately $20,000.

“Every budget director on this campus has been given the charge to find ways to cut more expenses,” said Athletics Director Sallie Beard.

Students on the tennis team who receive athletic financial aid will have the option of remaining enrolled at MSSU with their scholarships honored.

“After examining the financial issues that currently face us, and taking into account the well-being of the athletics department as a whole,” Beard said, “I came to the conclusion that downsizing was necessary.” With this step, the University will maintain appropriate alignment within NCAA Division II and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

Prepare for Earth Day, '09

Mike Kennedy, Biology/Environmental Health, wants to remind the campus about Health Sustainability Committee activities leading up to Earth Day. Students are invited to compete in two competitions.

There are scholarships being awarded for the best sustainability posters, these will be displayed in Reynolds Hall on Earth Day.

There is a design competition for slogans and logos for the campus recycling program. Entries are due to the Students Activities Office in Billingsly Student Center today, Friday, April 10.

The top entries will be displayed at the recycling booth on Earth Day and winners announced at the picnic on May 1.

Canadian Gift to Spiva Library by way of KXMS

Jeff Skibbe, 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International, says the station has had a productive relationship with Raymond Bisha, Naxos Music Library Sales (Canada), for some time now, and recently acquired over 80 new classical releases, including 32 new music video DVD titles, some of them in the new Blu-ray format
.
While the new classical CD titles will be accessible to all MSSU employees through the KXMS record library (39,000 titles located at Webster Hall) after they are catalogued, KXMS is gifting the new music video DVD titles to Spiva Library to maximize their accessibility.

"KXMS' association with Canada through our contact at Naxos certainly has been productive to date. After the Canada Semester site is posted on the Web, we will approach ATMA Classique located in Montreal for a substantial contribution of recorded Canadian music to share with the Four States," Skibbe says.
