16th Annual Wine Tasting this evening

wine bottle image

The 16th Annual Benefit Food & Wine Tasting will be held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. The Web site address is www.mssu.edu/kxms/winetaste.htm .The admission price is $20 per person.

Today, Friday, March 27, marks the 16th Annual Benefit Food & Wine Tasting fundraiser for 88.7KXMS, sponsored by the Klassix Society/Friends of KXMS. The event has grown since the first one held at Joplin’s once-renowned Travetti’s Italian Restaurant. The brain-child of Joplin restaurateur David Blum, the benefit Food & Wine Tasting has “mushroomed” into an evening of food and drink by a dozen area establishments, including regional wines from Stone Hill Winery, White Rose Winery, and the new Macadoodles in Joplin.

Other vendors for 2009 include Arde's Bistro, Cafe on the Route, The Candy House, Chatters, Club 1201, Crabby's, Hackett Hot Wings, J.B. Elephant's, Josie's Ristorante & Lounge, Pizza By Stout, Red Lobster of Joplin, and new to the event, The Vinery Wine Shop.

Held at the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce building just a few blocks east of The Red Onion Café on Fourth Street in Joplin, patrons of the radio station are treated to a large buffet of food and wine, classical music, and the opportunity to commune with others who cherish the fine arts radio service, an institutional gift/resource to the community from MSSU.

“We have kept the price very reasonable for sixteen years,” says KXMS general manager, Jeff Skibbe. “This allows virtually everyone to attend in support of something valued across economic lines.” “If someone has more means to give in support, the Klassix Society is happy to accept an additional check."

Like many other state university radio stations across the country, 88.7KXMS is operating with a reduced budget, dedicated to maintaining the quality of an exceptional service. At the same time, KXMS must look toward a digital radio future and the need to establish an endowment to stabilize and grow financial support.

Walk in this evening with cash or check in hand along with a healthy appetite for some of the best food in the Joplin area.

Spring Job Expo

The Spring Job Expo will be held from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1 at Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

The purpose of this event is to give all students the opportunity to attend this event. It is the perfect opportunity for freshman and sophomores to begin net-working with employers to learn about opportunities in their major area of study. Juniors and seniors should re-visit employers they've met at previous job fairs to learn about possible internships or to actively begin their job search.

Handouts on how to prepare for a job fair will be on tables in entry ways of Webster Hall, Hearnes Hall, Reynolds Hall, Billingsly Student Center, Anderson Justice Center, Robert Plaster Enterprise Center, and Spiva Library.

"It's never too early for students to begin networking with employers," says Lora Burch, Career Services.

She says the Education Job Fair is April 8 from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. in Young Gymnasium.

2009 National Issues Forum

Early in our democracy, citizens gathered to talk and learn together about their common problems before deciding how to solve them. We can still gather and deliberate to create a reasoned public voice.  Since 1981, National Issues Forums (NIF) has supported a nonpartisan, nationwide network of locally-sponsored public forums for that purpose.  Area residents, community organizations, and Missouri Southern students, faculty, and staff are invited to gather in small groups and deliberate on one of this year’s NIF topics:

The Energy Problem: Choices for an Uncertain Future
Wednesday, April 1 - 11 a.m.- 12:50 p.m.,  Spiva Library Fireplace

Breaking the Habit of Deficit Spending
Thursday, April 2 - 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.,  Spiva Library Fireplace
OR Thursday, April 9 - 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., Spiva Library Fireplace

Read a brief brochure on background facts (prepared by the non-partisan Kettering Foundation), and then meet to talk informally about various approaches to the problem.  There is no fee to participate, but you must reserve a seat.

For reservations or to arrange a forum for your group, contact Ann Wyman, Social Science, at 625-9697 or e-mail wyman-a@mssu.edu.

Contemporary Foreign Film Series offering tonight

The next feature film for the spring 2009 season of the Contemporary Foreign Film Series will be shown at approximately 7 p.m. tonight, Friday, March 27, in Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall.

The film is I Served the King of England (Czech Republic, 2006; 120 minutes) directed by Jiri Menzel.

The film begins as Jan Dítě (Oldřich Kaiser) is released from prison having served fourteen years and nine months of a fifteen year sentence. The time, though never specified in the film, appears to be the early 1960’s; Dítě is sent to an abandoned Czech village, where the German residents were expelled after World War II. He eventually comes across two neighbors: a professor searching the forest for trees of a musical quality to make instruments, and his assistant Marcela, who flirts with Dítě and reminds him of times gone by. Flashbacks make up the bulk of the film as Dítě recalls his life.

The period detail has been termed "stunning."

This film will be shown as part of a Missouri Southern Continuing Education Class. The cost of the class is $10 per person per semester and those interested may register before the film tonight. For further information about this film series, please contact Bill Kumbier, English, at kumbier-w@mssu.edu or Nick Kyle at kyle-n@mssu.edu.

FACULTY/STAFF

Judy Elimelech, Disability Services, praises Sigma Phi for raising money to purchase Kurzweill 3000 (scanner software that was developed originally for individuals with learning differences) for her office. Combining the software with a scanner and computer, a student in the Learning Center now can have any document read to them."President Kennedy asked Americans to develop a spirit of self-sacrifice," Judy says. "These students have exemplified that spirit."

In early March, Bob McDermid, Psychology, was one of three presenters from around the state at UMKC's Future Faculty Fellows (FFF) program on faculty roles and expectations. The FFF program is an interdisciplinary program for doctoral students who plan careers in post-secondary education.

Charles Nodler, Archivist, attended the Missouri Digitization Conference in Independence, Mo. on March 10 - 11. He also attended the Missouri Historical Records Advisory Board Strategic Planning Meeting on March 18 in Springfield.

Frank A. Pishkur, Art Department Head, and Brent Skinner, Lifelong Learning Ceramics Instructor, took six Missouri Southern art students to attend a workshop with ceramic artist Clayton Bailey March 13 at MSU in Springfield. Bailey's long artistic career has spanned both clay and mixed media constructions but has always worked with humor. His work is closely aligned with the California Funk Movement of Ceramic Art. Bailey demonstrated some of his techniques to transform the ceramic firing process of Raku into spectacular performances featuring the use of the kinetic energy generated by the use of the creation of steam. He also addressed both humorous and unique marketing strategies as well as serious practices that all artists should strive to emulate. More information about Clayton Bailey and the span of his artistic endeavors can be found at: http://www.claytonbailey.com/ .

Frank A. Pishkur, Art, and Scott Murray, Sculpture Adjunct, and one MSSU studio art major traveled to Fayetteville Wednesday, March 25 to attend the first Sculpture Symposium at the University of Arkansas. The symposium was held in conjunction with the group sculpture exhibition titled "Physical Reminders". The exhibition examined the idea of the physical in relation to our new media world using sculpture as a point of departure. Artists from around the nation gave visual lectures. The panel discussion: "What is the Physical in Relation to Our New Media World?" which was moderated by Christopher Cook, Curator of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City.

Frank Pishkur, Art, will have a closing reception for an exhibition of his pottery at the Post Memorial Art Reference Library (located in the Joplin Public Library on Main Street), from 2 - 4 p.m. this Sunday, March 29.
