Grand Finale Concert features senior winner

avan yu picture

Music lovers around the region will have another opportunity to hear Avan Yu, the 2008 Missouri Southern International Piano Competition grand prize winner, in the organization’s final concert.

Yu will perform with the Southern Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Kexi Liu, Music, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 5 in Taylor Performing Arts Center. The evening’s program will include Piano Concerto in A Minor by Grieg and Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor” by Beethoven. There is no admission charge.

At 21 years old, Yu has performed in recital and with orchestras in four continents and is the only pianist to win first prize in both the Junior and Senior divisions of the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition. As a result, he made his New York debut at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall in October 2008, presented by MSIPC.

“This Grand Finale concert will truly be a fitting conclusion to the piano competition,” said Vivian Leon, Director of MSIPC. “With this performance we are promising our supporters and friends a night to remember.”

In addition to the public concert, Avan Yu will perform for area school children, piano students, and Northwest Arkansas audiences during a residency from Feb. 27 to March 6.

Yu’s performances are underwritten in part by a grant from the Missouri Arts Council. For more information contact MSIPC at (417) 625-9755. Additional information about his background is available at www.avanyu.net.

Today's Brown Bag

Patricia Murphy, English, will review key research from her spring 2008 sabbatical that lead to the development of three essays, two of which will appear in upcoming book collections. Her work explores conversations of female characters in a Charlotte Brontë novel; parodies and rewritings of the popular novel She; and a late-century novel’s re-examination of empire in comparison to a mid-century novel.

The lecture series is free and open to all faculty and staff. The event will be 12 noon in room 202 of the Art Department. Enter through the main door. The room is to the left, opposite the Spiva Gallery.

Bring your own brown bag lunch and enjoy an opportunity to witness some of the research and creative works being accomplished at Missouri Southern.

For additional information contact Frank A. Pishkur, Art, at ext. 9735.

National Issues Forum:Commit an Act of Self-Government

Early in our democracy, citizens gathered to talk and learn together about their common problems before deciding how to solve them. We can still gather and deliberate to create a reasoned public voice.  Since 1981, National Issues Forums (NIF) has supported a nonpartisan, nationwide network of locally-sponsored public forums for that purpose.  Area residents, community organizations, and Missouri Southern students, faculty, and staff are invited to gather in small groups and deliberate on one of this year’s NIF topics:

The Energy Problem: Choices for an Uncertain Future
Tues 3/03: 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., Spiva Library Fireplace

Breaking the Habit of Deficit Spending
Wed  3/04: 11 a.m. -1 p.m., Spiva Library Fireplace
Thurs  3/05: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m., Spiva Library Fireplace

Read a brief brochure on background facts (prepared by the non-partisan Kettering Foundation), and then meet to talk informally about various approaches to the problem.  There is no fee to participate, but you must reserve a seat.

For reservations or to arrange a forum for your group, contact Ann Wyman, Social Sciences at 625-9697 or e-mail wyman-a@mssu.edu.

Students, teacher donate time at Art Center

Josie Mai, Art, worked with George A. Spiva Center for the Arts Director Jo Mueller and Education Coordinator Meg Skaggs in designing curriculum and recruiting volunteers to teach and assist during the annual two-week visit by Joplin school third-graders to the Center. in Joplin. Josie personally logged over 30 volunteer hours.

A total of 12 elementary education and art education majors volunteered a combined 50 hours of time. Josie Mai's ART 222 classes observed the field trip as it was happening and wrote a reflection on art education in a non-school setting.

"The dangled carrot was the 20 hours of community service that teacher education majors need to graduate but essentially I view this as service learning and the spirit of community service," Josie says.

The Spiva Library staff was so impressed with the teaching skills of students Rachel Hardee and Stefanie Williams, they offered the two students complementary memberships to the Art Center.

MSSU kicks off Show-Me Recycling Program

There have been rumors and, yes, they are true -- MSSU has been awarded and is awaiting funds to begin a campus recycling program.

As Missouri Southern kicks off the official beginning of the Show-Me Recycling Program, the initial phase of the program will include collection of office paper and plastic bottles. Paper collection boxes will be located in each office and lab on campus and plastic bottle collection barrels will be placed throughout campus for disposal of plastic bottles.

If you do not currently have a container in your office or work area, we are asking that you contact the individual in charge of your copy machine and have them save a paper box for your office. The custodians will collect this paper along with your trash.

Initially, there will be 75 bottle bins, with an additional 100 bins expected shortly. Please use these collection barrels across campus to dispose of your plastic bottles.

There is much more to the program, and announcements will be made as the program develops. Please help us with this program. The more we recycle, the more we save and the more we can expand the program. Recycling saves money, it saves landfill space, and it saves our world!

For further information about the Show-Me Recycling Program, please contact Mike Kennedy, Mike Fletcher, Biology/Environmental Health, or Program in Sustainability Coordinator Steve Smith, Social Sciences, or the MSSU Social Science Department.

Those interested may also visit MSSU’s Sustainability web site at http://www.mssu.edu/socsci/sust/sustindex.htm.
