Today's lectures canceled Two lectures by Frank Baron slated for today have been canceled due to the speaker's illness. Frank Baron is the director of the Max Kade Center for German-American Studies at the University of Kansas. He was slated to speak at MSSU as part of Germany Semester activities. Chad Stebbins, International Studies at MSSU, says two presentations are slated for Monday, Nov. 10: "Grimm for Grownups" at 1 p.m. and "Cheerfully Grimm" at 6:30 p.m. Both are in Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall. Students work with historic clothing Since September, Anne Jaros, Theatre, and her students, in cooperation with MSSU Service Learning, have worked to sort, catalog and preserve the tremendous textile collection at the Joplin Museum Complex (JMC). The idea for the project was born a number of years ago, when Jaros, as MSSU Costume Designer, approached Brad Belk, Executive Director of the Joplin Museum Complex, about working with the museum textiles as part of a sabbatical. Unfortunately, the sabbatical did not come to fruition, but Jaros maintained her desire to work with the clothing. Jaros then proposed a Service Learning course as part of the Theatre department. This course serves two purposes. The students had been requesting a study of late 19th and early 20th century costume history for some time. In addition, the Dorothea B. Hoover History Museum has been in dire need of people to work with the textile/costume collection. MSSU students, under the guidance of Jaros and JMC Staff, have had hands-on learning experience, examining historic garments; while doing so, they have performed a much-needed community service. They are learning the characteristics that distinguish each time period of clothing worn in the last 150 years. A total of 14 students work at the museum a minimum of four hours per week (from 1 - 3 p.m., Wednesday and Fridays). The students participate in both research and presentation of preparation materials and keep reflection journals as they prepare to present a final group exhibit for the public at the museum. The public is invited to observe the students performing a much-needed service while learning - the two important components to Service Learning: Integration of Academic Achievement with Community Service and Effective Reflection. The culmination of the project requires each student to select a garment(s) of their choosing and identify it according to a specific time-period. Students then will put together a display, along with period-appropriate accessories and other artifacts if desired. The projects will be "unveiled" on Tuesday, Nov. 18 and then will be on display for the public until Sunday, Nov. 23. Missouri Southern is a part of the Missouri Campus Compact, a coalition made up of 35 Missouri schools dedicated to helping students develop the values and skills of civic participation.
