Southern Theatre Presents Gas Oct. 14-18
Southern Theatre will present the play Gas at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, Oct. 14 - 18 in the Bud Walton Theatre. Admission is free to students, faculty, staff; $3 for adults; $1 for senior citizens and high school students. Georg Kaiser was one of the most influential of the playwrights who pioneered expressionism in Germany at the time of World War I. Ethan Mordden defines expressionism as “forms of composition and stagecraft through which the wishes, fears, and obsessions of the human psyche are made audible and visible.” Gas, written in 1918, is the second play in a trilogy - the others are Coral (1917) and Gas II (1920) - that explores whether the realization of human potential is possible in a society that too often tends to dehumanize. Kaiser takes us to a future where the entire planet is dependent on a single energy source: a gas that is made in only one factory. Accommodations for disabilities should be made at least 72 hours prior to the production. For theatre production information or requests for accommodations related to a disability, call Terri Spencer, Theatre, at (417) 625-9393 President's Gala Concert Oct. 23
The benefit concert, which will feature the rich tenor voice of MSSU President Bruce W. Speck, will raise funds to support the Missouri Southern Music Department and the President's Foundation Fund. Tickets are now available at the MSSU Ticket Office in the Bookstore. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens (60 or older). Tickets also will be available in the Music Department office on the MSSU campus and at Ernie Williamson Music (925 S. Range Line). The program will feature several vocal and instrumental ensembles from the Music Department and Dr. Speck will be a featured performer in many of those numbers. Selections will include classics such as Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree with Anyone Else but Me, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Moonlight Serenade, America the Beautiful, Londonderry Air, A Mighty Fortress is our God, Smack Dab in the Middle, a medley of Yankee Doodle Dandy, You're A Grand Old Flag, God Bless America and many more. "We are excited about this opportunity to share a unique concert to celebrate a great generation and its music and an outstanding music department," said Dr. Speck, who began his college education as a music major. "I am deeply honored to perform with our talented student ensembles that deserve the support. It is these students who will share the joy and value of music with so many young people in our communities when they graduate from Missouri Southern and become teachers, performers and members of church and community choirs." Music Department Head Jeffrey Macomber said he also is thrilled to have this opportunity for his students to perform with the president. "This is a rare treat, indeed, for our students and we are looking forward to many such concerts in the future. We are delighted that Dr. Speck not only talks about the value of the arts, but this is a clear demonstration of his commitment." Davis appointed to Board of Governors
