Ten chosen as Royalty finalists
In the event of inclement weather, the picnic and crowning will be held in the Dianne Mayes Student Life Center. The King and Queen, along with other finalists, will participate in the Homecoming parade at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 4, on the MSSU campus. Homecoming Royalty will be introduced during halftime activities at the Homecoming football game which begins at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 4. QUEEN FINALISTS KING FINALISTS
Faculty onstage today The MSSU faculty has supported the Alumni Association by raising $584 dollars for the scholarship fund. The winners of the "Penny-a Vote" contest will be in full Wizard of Oz regalia tomorrow. Just to let you know who to look for: Nii Abrahams, Business, will portray "Dorothy" Lee Elliff Pound, Alumni Association, says the four will be on stage after the coronation and will sing and dance to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". She says this was a record year for this fundraiser. Brass band to march in parade, play at Homecoming
Then, the band will play again from 12 noon to 2 p.m., Saturday at Hughes Stadium at Missouri Southern State University. Festhaus-Musikanten is a brass band featuring German music from Kansas City. The band will provide entertainment at a mini-Oktoberfest before MSSU’s Homecoming football game against Washburn University. The performance comes as part of activities surrounding the “Germany Semester” at MSSU. Throughout the semester a wide variety of lectures, performances, presentations and other activities are focusing on the people and culture of Germany. President's Gala Concert Oct. 23
The benefit concert, which will feature the rich tenor voice of MSSU President Bruce W. Speck, will raise funds to support the Missouri Southern Music Department and the President's Foundation Fund. Tickets are now available at the MSSU Ticket Office in the Bookstore. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens (60 or older). Tickets also will be available in the Music Department office on the MSSU campus and at Ernie Williamson Music (925 S. Range Line). The program will feature several vocal and instrumental ensembles from the Music Department and Dr. Speck will be a featured performer in many of those numbers. Selections will include classics such as Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree with Anyone Else But Me, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Moonlight Serenade, America the Beautiful, Londonderry Air, A Mighty Fortress is our God, Smack Dab in the Middle, a medley of Yankee Doodle Dandy, You're A Grand Old Flag, God Bless America and many more. "We are excited about this opportunity to share a unique concert to celebrate a great generation and its music and an outstanding music department," said Dr. Speck, who began his college education as a music major. "I am deeply honored to perform with our talented student ensembles who deserve the support. It is these students who will share the joy and value of music with so many young people in our communities when they graduate from Missouri Southern and become teachers, performers and members of church and community choirs." Music Department Head Jeffrey Macomber said he also is thrilled to have this opportunity for his students to perform with the president. "This is a rare treat, indeed, for our students and we are looking forward to many such concerts in the future. We are delighted that Dr. Speck not only talks about the value of the arts, but this is a clear demonstration of his commitment." Homecoming departmental display contest The Departmental Displays Competition was originated so that the celebration of Homecoming would be visible to those working and visiting campus. Judging was done by a group of MSSU faculty and staff members on behalf of the Homecoming Committee. On Thursday, Oct. 2, the following winners were announced: Campus Displays: Departmental Displays: Relay for Life tickets available today The Missouri Southern Relay for Life team is raising funds to help fight cancer. Josh Doak, Housing, says If you haven't purchased your ticket yet, you may do so TODAY at the Homecoming Picnic. The discounted price is $1/each or 6 for $5. Half of the funds raised will go to the winning ticket, and half will go to the American Cancer Society. Tickets can be purchased at the Relay for Life tent in the Oval. Look for the American Cancer Society banner. The drawing for the winning ticket will be done after the noon-time crowning of the King and Queen. Career Development Day Career Services will be host Career Development Day from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8 in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Career Development Day attracts both local and national employers who will have informational booths set up at the event. Students will meet the employers and hear directly from them about their careers, companies, and employment opportunities. "Career Break-out" sessions will also be offered from 9 a.m. to Noon, giving students the opportunity to learn more about specific career fields. Opportunities highlighted include international business careers, computer science, biology and environmental health, public relations and mass communications, English, economics and finance, engineering technology, marketing, management, human resources, human services, accounting, and nursing. These sessions will allow time for students to ask questions and get answers from professionals. Students and alumni are invited to Career Development Day at Missouri Southern State University. University Experience (MIDS 100) informational meeting The First-Year Experience Program would like to invite all interested, full-time MSSU faculty and salaried staff with a Master’s-level degree to an informational meeting about the opportunity to teach a Fall 2009 section of the MIDS 100: The University Experience course. The meeting will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, Oct. 8 in Plaster Hall 109. German music afternoon on 88.7/KXMS 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International will air an afternoon of all-German music spanning the Renaissance to the 21th Century on the National Day of Germany (Reunification Day), today, Friday Oct. 3. Host Julie Ensor will begin the observance with a new and unusual recording of the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach arranged for string trio. The Klassix Society/Friends of KXMS gave the first of the Fine Arts Radio International Awards in 2000. Since then, there have been six producers contest winners, five recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award, and three recipients of the Karl Haas Prize for Music Education. Horton Jr. Gallery of Stockton, Calif. is pleased to present the paintings of Steven Labadessa, Art, and Brandon C. Smith, in an exhibition that explores the emotional depth of expressionistic painting. Steven also will be having a solo exhibition entitled “Severe Beauty” at Moraine Valley Community College - Fine and Performing Arts Center from Jan. 12 - Feb. 5. 17 Hippies to air on KGCS The Germany Semester musical presentation "17 Hippies - Live from Berlin" will air on KGCS-TV starting in October. The program on September 22 drew a large crowd to Taylor Performing Arts Center on the Missouri Southern campus. The program will air at 8 p.m. Wed., Oct. 8, Sunday, Oct. 12 and Tuesday, Oct. 14. KGCS programming may be seen on digital channel 22 over-the-air, and on regional cable systems include Cable One Channel 7 and Mediacom Channel 77. Fran Bartholet and J. Duggal, CADD, visited the Harley Davidson production plant in Kansas City with 10 Engineering Technology students and 43 students from Joplin High School on Sept. 25. Students were able to observe state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and products. Greg Buchholz, School of Business Administration, was lead author of an article in the current number of the Journal of Economic Issues, entitled "The Chilean Pension System at 25 Years: The Evolution of a Revolution." This summer he received a $2,500 fellowship from the University of Pittsburgh (PA) Center for Latin American Studies to expand upon this research using its Eduardo Lozano Latin American Collection of over 500,000 books and journals. . While in Pennsylvania he met with many of the leading scholars in Latin American Studies including Carmelo Mesa-Lago, an economist who has authored over 95 books and articles on Latin American social security. Al Cade and Jeanie Cozens, Teacher Education and Peggy Day of Project S.P.E.A.K. will present two workshops at the Third Annual MELL Conference in Kansas City, Mo.. On Oct. 23 they will present a workshop on Shared Reading: Modifying a Familiar Approach for Today’s Diverse Classroom, and on Oct. 24 they will present a workshop entitled Improving Content Literacy for English Learners: Secondary. MELL is the Missouri Migrant Education and English Learning program which is designed to use existing resources to better serve all English Language Learners (ELL’s) and migrant students in Missouri. Jeanie Cozens, Teacher Education and Peggy Day of Project S.P.E.A.K., are presenting workshops at the 42nd Annual Missouri State Council of the International Reading Association (MSC/IRA) Fall Conference in Springfield, Mo. On Thursday, Oct. 2 they presented a workshop on Shared Reading: Modifying a Familiar Approach for Today’s Diverse Classroom, and today they will present a workshop entitled Improving Content Literacy for English Learners: Secondary. Hillary Fogerty, English, chaired a session and presented a paper at the Third Annual Association of Literature on Screen in The Netherlands. Jill Greer, Social Science, presented a talk at Van Meter State Park near Marshall, Mo on Sept. 20 titled "American Indian Patriotism and Pride: the Otoe-Missouria Flag Song as Case Study". The talk was based on a 2008 article published in the University of Kansas series titled "Kansas Working Papers in Linguistics" available online at the KU website Patricia Murphy, English, has been invited to contribute an essay to an international volume of scholarship on the Victorian novel She. The book will be published in Rome, probably in 2009. Debra Barnes Snodgrass, Music, was named "Woman of Achievement" for 2008 by the Business and Professional Women chapter in Carthage.
