Edwards traveling to Mauritius, Bangladesh

Due to the escalating violence in Pakistan, the International Reading Association has postponed the ongoing Pakistan professional development project that Willie Edwards, Teacher Education, has been part of since 2006.

However, Willie plans to participate in a United Nations funded project through UNESCO and the Mauritius Institute for Education for which the International Reading Association provides technical assistance.

The island nation of Mauritius, is located some 1000 kilometers east of southern Madagascar. It is a paradise island in the classic sense. It boasts over one million inhabitants. It is a tourist destination, primarily for South Africans and Europeans. Independent for the last 40 years, Mauritius was known to the Arabs as early as the 10th century. It was colonized by the Dutch in the 1600's, the French in the 1700's and the British in the 1800's. The end result has been a peaceful blending of religions and cultures of Chinese, Creole, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian.

Following this project, Willie will travel to Bangladesh for several weeks in November and December to begin his dissertation research project comparing professional development between the Islamic nations of Pakistan and Bangladesh. He is planning to take time to visit his son Mike, a 2008 MSSU graduate, who attends graduate school in Kunming, located in southwestern China.

Biking for a cure to diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors play roles.

Becky Gallemore, Teacher Education, will take part in a 100-mile bicycle ride Oct. 6 to help find the cure for diabetes. Her father-in-law is in the hospital again for the fifth time in just over 4 months. Last year he almost lost his leg due to infection. Many other diabetic patients have similar stories.
