Contemporary Film Series resumes

Recent foreign and independent films will be shown this semester as part of the Continuing Education “Foreign Film” class. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (France; 112 min.) is slated for 7 p.m. tonight in Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a stunning adaptation of the memoir of the same title by Jean-Dominique Bauby, an affluent, sophisticated fashion magazine editor, who, as a result of a terrible automobile accident, was almost entirely paralyzed.

The film is striking in the range of cinematic techniques directorJulian Schnabel employs to convey the protagonist’s condition and his struggle to communicate.  The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best cinematography, best direction and best achievement in editing.  The New YorkTimes’ A. O. Scott called the film “astonishing…a beautiful and inspiring movie.”

Those who want to attend the film series will be asked to register and pay a $10 course fee to offset the cost of purchasing the films on DVD.  A brief discussion will follow the screening of each film.  For more information on the films and the class, should contact Bill Kumbier, English, at kumbier-w@mssu.edu.

German folklore, castles topics of presentations

Beverley Driver Eddy, Ph.D., a professor emeritus at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Penn., will speak twice on campus today. Both presentations are free and open to the public.

  • Eddy's first presentation, "German Folklore: A Key to History," will begin at 8 a.m., Friday Sept. 5 in W. Robert Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall.

  • Eddy's second presentation, "The German Castle: From Fortress to Museum and Youth Hostel," will begin at 10 a.m. the same morning in W. Robert Corley Auditorium.

Eddy will trace the history, architecture, and evolving romance of the German castle. While she will concentrate on the castles of the Rhine river valley, she will also discuss Germany's two best-known castles: Burg Eltz and Neuschwanstein.

Although it is common to look at legends for their universal attributes, Dr. Eddy will examine them for their basis in fact, showing how most German legends about dragons and devils actually relate to specific historical events that occurred at specific sites in the Rhine river valley.

Beverley Driver Eddy has a Ph.D. in German from Indiana University, studied for two years at the Freie Universität Berlin, worked for a time as a bi-lingual tour guide at a German castle, and taught at Middlebury and Dickinson colleges. She specializes in German and Scandinavian literary relations, but has a strong secondary interest in German folklore, and has published on the folk history of the Rhine river valley and on the history of the fictional character Dracula.

Presentation on pop culture next Thursday

Alexander Ganz, graduate assistant in the German program at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, will present “Pop-Cultural Relations between Germany and the U.S.: The Simpsons, Family Guy and Music as a Learning Experience” at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 9 in Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall.

The event is free and open to the public.

This presentation will feature pop culture and pop icons that are present in both the United States and Germany. Ganz will focus on the ways certain TV series and popular music represent culture, language and society and why they are important.

Ganz will discuss not only what is popular in Germany, but also the role of pop culture in the language-learning experience as it applies to Germans learning English and learners of German as a second language.

A native German, Ganz spent over two years in the United States prior to his graduate studies working as an au pair and a designer in an advertising agency. He received a B.A.- equivalent in American Studies and Communication at the University of Leipzig in Germany.

Relay for Life meeting this morning

Almost everyone knows someone who has been affected in some way by cancer. Each spring, the Cancer Association holds a Relay for Life to raise awareness and funds to help fight this disease.

Help MSSU's Relay for Life team by coming to our first meeting for this school year. Last year, we didn't even form our team until May as school was just letting out and we had only one month before the actual event. Even so, we had a great team effort, lots of fun, and managed to raise almost $1,000 to add to the total for the event which was $24, 418.

This year's first meeting will be held at 10 a.m., this morning, Friday, Sept. 5, in Spiva Library, room 413A. The first meeting will be to discuss fund raising plans that won't require a lot of time, effort, and hassles. The goal is to have fun as well as raise awareness and funds to help fight this disease.

For information, contact Lora Burch, Career Services, at ext. 3138.

Give the "gift of life"

A blood drive, hosted by Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, will take place from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10 in a Mobile Unit on the MSSU oval.

Sheila Hart, Nursing, says a free cholesterol screening will be offered to all those giving blood.

Please bring photo identification. Visit the blood donation website at www.cbco.org

The community is invited to enjoy this lively and poignant satire. The film is free and open to the public.
