Kolpin Foundation donation benefits KGCS

MSSU President Bruce Speck with Ruth Kolpin-Rubison

A special ceremony and reception honoring Ruth Kolpin-Rubison of Carthage was held Monday, March 10 in the KGCS-TV studios in Webster Hall.

The studios have been renamed the “Ruth I. Kolpin Studios,” in honor of a generous contribution received from the Ruth I. Kolpin Foundation in support of the television upgrade project.

Thanks in part to the Kolpin Foundation, the station will be ready to broadcast digitally early next year (when all U.S. television stations are required to do so).

The station will also upgrade its production and studio equipment to reach a much larger audience and provide seamless digital productions from the beginning of the production process to the final broadcast.

"Our University greatly appreciates the contributions of Ruth Kolpin-Rubison in helping us meet the technological challenges of the 21st century," said Bruce Speck, Missouri Southern President.

National Issues Forum - 2008

Early in our democracy, citizens gathered to talk and learn together about their common problems before deciding how to solve them. Today’s citizens still gather and deliberate to create a reasoned public voice.  Since 1981, National Issues Forums (NIF) has supported a nonpartisan, nationwide network of locally-sponsored public forums for that purpose.

Missouri Southern welcomes students, faculty, staff, and local community members to come together to discuss this year’s topic: "The Energy Problem: Choices for an Uncertain Future."

Groups of 8-10 citizens will read a brief brochure on background facts (prepared by the non-partisan Kettering Foundation), and then meet to talk informally about various approaches to the problem.  Meetings will be held at Spiva Library Main Floor fireplace area. There is no fee to participate, but you must reserve a place.

Spring Business and Economic Lecture features Olson

Missouri Southern alumnus Matt Olson will speak as part of the MSSU Robert W. Plaster School of Business Administration’s Business and Economic Lecture series on Thursday, March 27. The event will be held from 11 - 12:15 p.m. in Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall. It is free and open to the public.

A 1999 MSSU marketing graduate, Olson will talk about taking a year's hiatus from the corporate world to travel the globe with little more than a backpack and shoestring budget.

After graduating with honors from the School of Business in 1999, Matt Olson worked for the Cerner Corporation, a healthcare technology company based in Kansas City, Missouri. During the next seven years Olson worked in various areas of the company, including domestic sales, global operations, marketing, and internal IT. The bulk of his career, however, was spent managing Cerner’s public website.

In January of 2007, after two years of planning, Olson left his job and set out to experience the world. He spent one full year backpacking across the globe, experiencing the best and worst the planet has to offer. One year to the day, Olson returned to the United States after traveling over 70,000 miles, setting foot on all seven continents and visiting 43 countries.

Pick up your lunch at the buffet and prepare for an interesting and valuable presentation.

Program features Coleman Theatre

The historic Coleman Theatre in Miami, Okla. is featured on an upcoming documentary program scheduled to air on KGCS-TV.

The program takes a look at the history of the theatre, restoration efforts, and the use of the theatre today.  It takes viewers behind the scenes inside the theatre, to look at details such as the large crystal chandelier and the theatre’s organ.

Coleman Theatre Beautiful was produced by the RSU Public TV, the television station at Rogers State University in Claremore, Okla.

“We are glad to be able to obtain a copy of the program from RSU, to share with area viewers.  It captures a unique feature in the cultural history of the region,” says Judy Stiles, KGCS-TV General Manager.

The program will air twice during the week of March 16, with scheduled air times of 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 16 and 9:30 p.m. on Monday, March 17.  It will also be shown at other times in upcoming weeks.

KGCS programming may be seen on UHF channel 57, Cable One channel 7 and Mediacom channel 77.

Spell Ball Tuesday, March 25 at Martin Luther School

What:  Joplin NALA Read’s Ninth Annual Spell Ball Games is an enjoyable version of a Spelling Bee, run something like a baseball tournament.  The team members consult with each other before spelling the word pitched to their team.  If they answer correctly, they score a home run.  The competition is friendly, complete with music, concessions by Hardee’s, coffee by Starbuck’s and a silent auction.

Why:  The goal of this event is to promote literacy awareness and raise $7,000 to provide funding for the programs and services Joplin NALA Read offers to the community. The MSSU English Department has a team and Lion baseball personality Warren Turner will throw out the first pitch.

Come out and cheer on the teams.  Admission is FREE.  Bid on these great auction items:  Wii with sports game and extra remote, Tastefully Simple gourmet food basket, Longaberger basket, books, gift certificates, handcrafted jewelry and much more!

Kucharski demonstrates clay form process

Artist Malcolm E. Kucharski demonstrated his art making process on Thursday, March 6 at MSSU's ceramic studio. Over the course of the entire day approximately 45 MSSU art students watched him create a series of hand built sculptural clay forms based upon pottery shapes and concepts with a visual texture that alluded to geological formations and processes.

Frank Pishkur, Art, says Kucharski commented how he "...like[d] to let the clay do what it does" as he constantly pressed, stretched, caressed, bent, incised, and cradled the clay in his hands.

His mark-making process worked within the gestural spirit of Abstract Expressionism. Yet, at the same time, he shared traditions based on Japanese/Korean Folk pottery aesthetics, strongly influenced by the British Studio Pottery Movement. This rich history was translated to him first hand by one of its direct descendants, the American master Warren Mackenzie.

Kucharski teaches art at Pittsburg State University. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics. He has exhibited his works in clay across this country for over 25 years. He has also exhibited both in Japan and Taiwan.
