Today's Brown Bag Don't miss today's Brown Bag Lunch for faculty and staff. Josie Mai, Art, Jim Jackson, Biology, and Brenda Jackson, Theatre, will speak on "Service Learning in Kenya." Phonathon update As of the end of the third week of the 2008 Phonathon, faculty and staff members gave the student callers a boost by surpassing last year's total number of contributions and total dollar amount. Curt Betebenner, Foundation, says that during the 2007 Phonathon the faculty and staff made 50 contributions for a total of $7700. He says this week the response to the call from John Messick, Academic Affairs, for support to Southern stands at 55 contributions and $8,043. Many thanks to those that helped us surpass last year's total. "We will announce final tally for faculty and staff at the end of the 2008 annual Phonathon in April," Curt says. "Until then our sincere thanks goes out to everyone who has made a pledge," he adds. Spring Job Expo slated for Wednesday, March 5 Representatives from business, government, non-profit agencies, and education organizations are expected to take part in Missouri Southern State University's Spring Job Expo. Local and national employers are registered to attend. This event provides an opportunity for students and alumni to learn more about full-time employment, internships, summer and part-time jobs, as well as graduate and professional educational programs. Award-winning novelist to read from works
Award-winning novelist, Rilla Askew, will read selections from her books at Missouri Southern State University on Thursday, March 6 and Friday, March 7. She is the latest author to participate in the Saltzman Series for Visiting Writers, a program of Missouri Southern’s English Department. Askew’s presentation on Thursday, March 6, will begin at 7 p.m. in MSSU’s Spiva Art Gallery. Friday’s session will start at 10 a.m. at the University Java coffee shop on the first floor of Southern’s Spiva Library. Both presentations are free and open to the public. Askew has authored three novels, Harpsong, Fire in Beulah, and The Mercy Seat, and a collection of short fiction, Strange Business. Her native state of Oklahoma serves as the setting for the stories, but America as a whole is her subject. She writes, “As a novelist, what I’m interested in is demythologizing, deromanticizing America’s master narrative, the half-truth comfort stories we tell ourselves." Her books often confront the nation’s history of racial conflict and wrestle with the biblical themes of guilt and repentance. Askew’s short story “The Killing Blanket” was selected for Prize Stories 1993: The O. Henry Awards, and Strange Business received the Oklahoma Book Award that same year. Her first novel, The Mercy Seat, won the Oklahoma Book Award and the Western Heritage Award in 1998. Fire in Beulah received the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation and the Myers Book Award from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights. National Issues Forum - 2008 Early in our democracy, citizens gathered to talk and learn together about their common problems before deciding how to solve them. Today’s citizens still gather and deliberate to create a reasoned public voice. Since 1981, National Issues Forums (NIF) has supported a nonpartisan, nationwide network of locally-sponsored public forums for that purpose. Missouri Southern welcomes students, faculty, staff, and local community members of any nationality to come together to discuss this year’s topic: "The Energy Problem: Choices for an Uncertain Future." Groups of 8-10 citizens will read a brief brochure on background facts (prepared by the non-partisan Kettering Foundation), and then meet to talk informally about various approaches to the problem. Meetings will be held at Spiva Library Main Floor fireplace area. There is no fee to participate, but you must reserve a place. Select one of the dates:

A common virus, it is estimated at least 50% of sexually active people catch HPV during their lifetime. A male or female who takes part in any kind of sexual activity is at risk. There are many different types of HPV; some cause no harm. Others can cause disease of the genital area. The virus can go away on its own, but when it does not go away it can develop into cervical cancer, pre cancerous lesions or genital warts, depending on the HPV type.
