Legacy Day tomorrow on campus

Legacies of alumni will receive the opportunity to explore what Missouri Southern is all about at this year’s annual Legacy Day slated for tomorrow, Sat., Feb. 9.

A legacy is a child lucky enough to have one or more relatives who graduated from or attended MSSU. Tomorrow these MSSU legacies will have the opportunity to show their green colors while having fun with Missouri Southern’s fellow Lions.

Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m., and an assortment of interactive classes will follow at 3 p.m. The classes will be taught by MSSU Teacher Education majors in the Taylor Education Building. The classes will allow each legacy to bring home a little piece of MSSU. Activities wrap up at 5 p.m.

Legacies are invited to help cheer on the Lions at the double-header basketball game against the Fort Hays State tigers. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m.

For more information, please contact Elisa Bryant, Alumni Association, at (417) 625-9355.

Surprise your sweetheart with a Singing Valentine

Once again bringing joy to many unsuspecting loved ones, the Missouri Southern Chamber Choir will be singing throughout the Joplin area on Thursday, Feb. 14.

Choral Director/Dept. Head Bud Clark says this is the seventh year the unique present of songs have been delivered to both men and women. Recipients will find themselves surrounded either by men in tuxes or women in formal gowns and expressing messages of love.

Those who want more information should call Bud Clark, at (417) 625-9562, or e-mail him at clark-b@mssu.edu to set up a time and a place. The cost is only $25. Deliveries will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday.

"The proceeds will be used to help pay for a short choir tour to Tulsa for recruiting purposes," Bud says.

Phonathon continues

Curt Betebenner, Foundation, says the 26th annual Phonathon is off to a strong start. He says response a letter to faculty/staff from John Messick, Academic Affairs, asking them to support the University through gifts has been encouraging. To date 27 employees have contributed $3,188 to the University.

Last year 50 gifts from employees totaled over $7,700.

"Obviously the total dollar amount is important, but the number of employees that support Southern speaks volumes to the community and carries a good deal of weight," Curt says.

He says faculty/staff gifts are counted in the total Phonathon tally and give encouragement to student callers as they watch their nightly tally climb.

"We extend our thanks to those that have made early pledges and outright gifts to the annual drive so far," Curt states.

Education majors begin student teaching

Seventy-six education majors at Missouri Southern State University are engaging in their student teaching “professional semester” in the teacher education program. The experience is one of the requirements for graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education (BSE).

Keith Robertson, Teacher Education, says all of the teacher candidates will be in classrooms for fourteen weeks under the supervision of a certified teacher. They must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative Grade Point Average and a 2.5 GPA in their majors; pass all sections of a comprehensive core curriculum exam covering areas such as social studies, math, language arts and other areas; receive a recommendation from a faculty member outside the teacher education program; have an ACT of 20 or higher; and write an autobiography.

Students apply for tentative admission at the beginning of their junior year and then apply for the student teaching experience at the beginning of their senior year. The student teaching semester is the culminating experience and all course work must be completed. Southern's performance-based program is one of the largest teacher education programs in the state. Candidates must demonstrate mastery of the teacher education program standards, such as well-developed lesson plans and classroom management skills.
