Johnson and Bates Homecoming Royalty

Lauren Bates & EJ Johnson

Missouri Southern students Elbert “EJ” Johnson and Lauren Bates were crowned 2007Homecoming King and Queen last Friday on the MSSU campus. This year's theme was Let the Good Times Roar: Celebrating 70 Years of Lion Pride.

The candidates were presented at the annual Homecoming all-campus cookout on the campus oval. The King and Queen, along with other finalists, participated in the Homecoming parade and were introduced at the football game on Saturday, Oct. 13.

MSSU students chose Johnson and Bates in balloting earlier this week. Johnson represents Southern IMPACT. Bates represents Southern Orientation Leaders.

Elbert “EJ” Johnson, senior Marketing and Management major, is the son of Elbert and Elaine Johnson of Kansas City.

Johnson, an Eagle Scout, was an All-Conference MSSU Lion football player from 2004-06 and a football captain. He is a member of Southern IMPACT and the Campus Activities Board. His extra-curricular activities include sports, roller skating and relaxing with friends. Following graduation from Missouri Southern, he contemplates seeking employment in the sports management or sports marketing fields.

Lauren J. Bates, senior Marketing and International Business major, is the daughter of Jeanie and the late Laurel Bates of Salem.

She is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Honor Society, International Poets Society, Missouri Southern Student Senate, DEX, the Pre-Law Club and the International Business Club. She received a 2004-06 Patrons scholarship and has won an International Scholarship to study in Italy. She is an Orientation Leader and was a member of the MSSU Volleyball team.

Her plans after graduation from Missouri Southern are to attend law school and eventually open her own practice.

Liu presentation October 22

Victoria Liu, a native of China and Missouri Southern graduate, will present "From the Heartland of China to the Heartland of America" at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 22 in Webster Hall Auditorium.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Liu traveled to the United States in 1997 with nothing but a dream and two suitcases packed full of 22 years of her life in China. At Missouri Southern, she met several people who became instrumental in her personal growth and career choice.

During this presentation, she shares one of the most important lessons she learned from her time here: nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it. In her 10 years in America, Liu has discovered herself and learned how to keep her dreams alive.

Victoria Liu, a 2001 MSSU graduate, earned a Ph.D. in cellular physiology and cancer research at Northwestern University in June 2007. She has started a post-doctoral fellowship at the Medical Research Center at the University of Chicago.

Ghost hunters Zaffis and Moon to lecture at TPAC

John Zaffis and Christopher Moon, ghost hunters, will lecture on campus during the Halloween season. They will speak at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24 in Taylor Performing Arts Center at Missouri Southern State University.

There is no charge to attend. The appearance is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.

Zaffis has been ghost hunting for nearly 30 years. He is working on a pilot for the Discovery Channel and has investigated hauntings for many shows including A Haunting in Connecticut. He trained under his aunt and uncle who were the investigators of the Amityville House.

Christopher Moon is the creator of Haunted Times Magazine. As owner of Thomas Edison’s “Telephone to the Dead”, Chris will give a live demonstration. Although there is no satisfactory explanation for the strange calls from the dead, there have been several theories put forth.

Moon is also the creator of the movie Chasing the Shadows.

Zaffis has investigated ghosts and poltergeists and has worked with both spiritualists and psychics concerning how their knowledge is used for channeling, reincarnation (past life regression), or the ''calling of the spirits'' for information, and how they use meditation to acquire the information which they are seeking.
