"Let the Good Times Roar" at Homecoming 2007

Make plans to take part in activities surrounding Missouri Southern State University’s 2007 Homecoming, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13. The theme is "Let the Good Times Roar: Celebrating 70 Years of Lion Pride."

  • Friday’s activities will begin with the 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Campus Picnic on the MSSU Oval.

  • That evening, the complimentary All Alumni Reception, sponsored by the Robert W. Plaster School of Business Administration and the MSSU Alumni Association will be held from 6-7 p.m. at the Joplin Ramada Inn. 

    At 7 p.m., the Alumni Awards Dinner will take place, also at the Ramada Inn.  The cost is $16 for members or $18 for the general Public.   Those honored will be Outstanding Alumni, the Lion Hearted Recipient, Hall of Fame Inductees, Outstanding Professors, Governor’s Award Recipient and the December 2006 Superior Service recipients.  Entertainment will be provided by "Southern Exposure."  Business attire is recommended for both the Reception and the Dinner.

  • On Friday night, a free block party for students featuring the band “Some Fun” from St. Louis will be held from 7 - 11 p.m. at the southeast corner of Newman & Duquesne Roads.

  • On Saturday, Homecoming Day, The Lion Pride Brunch will take place in the BSC Connor Ballroom at 9:30 a.m. with registration beginning at 9 a.m. The cost is $8 for Alumni Association members and Lionbackers members and $10 for the public. 
  • A large number of bands and floats will be featured at the Homecoming Parade at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning on campus.  Students, faculty, staff, community and, especially, children are invited to attend.

  • Kickoff for the Homecoming game with the Fort Hays Tigers will take place at 2 p.m.  Tickets can be purchased for $5 in advance from the MSSU Alumni Association or $10 at the gate. Faculty/Staff/students get in free.  

  • Following the game, the Alumni Band post-game reunion will be held at 5 p.m. in Phinney Hall on campus.  The cost to take part is $10.

Today's Brown Bag

Betsy Griffin, Academic Affairs, reminds faculty/staff about the Brown Bag lunch for today, Friday, Sept. 14. Dr. Brad Kleindl, Business, will speak on "Senior Fulbright Opportunities."

The Brown Bag will be held from 12:10 - 12:50 p.m. in the Keystone Room on the 3rd floor of the BSC. Lunch is provided courtesy of Academic Affairs and Sodexho.

Just pick up your lunch at the buffet and prepare for an interesting presentation. All faculty/staff are welcome to attend.

Stir up your chili next Monday

The Second Annual Homecoming Chili Cook-Off will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 8 on the first floor of the Billingsly Student Center. Participants must adhere to the following guidelines to take part:

  • Cooking areas must be completely set up by 11 a.m. the day of the event.
  • Chili must be prepared in advance.
  • Chili is to consist of any kind of meat, beans, vegetables or combinations thereof, cooked with chili peppers, spices and other ingredients.
  • Chili may be made with or without meat or beans.
  • Contestants should bring a minimum of 5 quarts of chili, keeping in mind that the more you bring, the more people will be able to taste it and the more potential votes you will receive.
  • A complete list of ingredients must be available for each entry.
  • Contestants must be willing to eat their own chili.
  • All contestants must provide their own heating apparatus- crock pots, or slow cooker, extension cords, and cooking utensils, and ingredients.
  • Each entrant will be provided with one 8’ table and one chair.
  • Participants must make sure all garbage is picked up from their area.

A $1 donation, taken at the door, will be assessed to allow for chili-tasting. All proceeds will benefit the United Way of Joplin.

Awards will be given to participants for: Best Overall Taste; Best Name of Chili; Best Presentation of Chili. Remember: Decorating your table using the theme "Let the Good Times Roll: Celebrating 70 Years of Lion Pride" will earn you more points.

Awards will be given at 1 p.m. in Billingsly Student Center, bottom floor. Forms must be returned to the Alumni Office by Thursday, Oct. 4.

Turner to receive Lion-Hearted Award

Warren Turner

Warren Turner, Joplin, will receive the Lion-Hearted, 2007 Award from the Missouri Southern Alumni Association. The Award recognizes individuals who, although not Missouri Southern graduates, are outstanding supporters of Missouri Southern.

Turner’s award will be unveiled at the Alumni Awards Dinner the evening of Friday, Oct. 12 at the Joplin Ramada Inn. He also will be recognized at halftime of the MSSU homecoming football game the next day.

For more than 40 years, the name Warren Turner has been linked with baseball in Southwest Missouri. In 1976, after 11 years of coaching baseball, football, and basketball in high school, Turner was named head baseball coach at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Mo.

After two years at the helm, he took his team to the NAIA World Series in 1978. The Lions finished second, and Turner was named National Coach of the Year.

Turner retired from coaching at the end of the 2007 season with 852 career wins. He continues teaching college classes, supervising student teachers, and refereeing high school and college football and basketball. He will be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame later this year.

Warren and his wife, Gloria, have been married 37 years and have two daughters: Tosha Schuller (and husband, Thomas) and Erin Braker (and husband, Teague). They have seven grandchildren: Sofie, 5; Josef, 2; Katelyn, 11; Jackson, 9; Jace, 10; Avery, 4; and Logan, 4.

Flinn, Williams named "Outstanding Alumni"

Two longtime Missouri Southern supporters and leaders in their fields, Don E. Flinn, M.D., ’42 and Kevin Williams, ’87 have been tabbed for the 2007 Outstanding Alumni awards.

Don Flinn, M.D.

Don Flinn, M.D., born in Tulsa, Okla., in 1923, graduated from Joplin High School in 1940 and from what was then Joplin Junior College in 1942. He attended Harvard Medical school graduating in 1946. Following an internship at Boston City Hospital in Boston, Mass. he has had a long career in the United States Army Air Force, and has worked as a Psychiatrist, teacher and Psychiatric treatment facility administrator.

Flinn is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American College of Psychiatrists and he is a member of the Aerospace Medical Association. He is a member and past president of the United States Air Force Psychiatric Society and is a former Councilor of the Southern California Psychiatric Society and is a Life Fellow of the Southern Psychiatric Association.

Flinn and his wife, Sonia, have been married 60 years and have three children. They live in Eugene, Ore.

Kevin Williams

Kevin Williams is the Chief Financial Officer at Jack Henry and Associates Inc., in Monett. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Missouri Southern State University in 1987.

Williams, a Certified Public Account, served as a senior manager at the accounting firm Baird, Kurtz & Dobson from 1987 until 1998, when he left the company to accept a position with Jack Henry. In 2001 Williams was named the company’s chief financial officer.

Williams is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and of the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is also a member of the Monett Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Advisory Board of the Robert Plaster School of Business at MSSU.

Williams and his wife Toni, also a Missouri Southern graduate, have one daughter, Tallie Jo. They reside in Monett.

Home Front next offering from Southern Theatre

Southern Theatre presents a poignant story of social strife and a family in turmoil with James Duff’s Home Front, Oct. 16 – 20  at the Bud Walton Theatre.       

Jay Fields, Theatre, directs this riveting drama that blends comedy and tragedy as it illuminates the dilemma of a middle-class Texas family unable to comprehend and deal with the deep-seated disaffection of their Vietnam veteran son.

Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. each evening.  Tickets may be reserved in person in the lobby of Taylor Auditorium or by calling the box office at (417) 625-3190 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The box office will open on Oct. 9.

No refunds or exchanges will be given. Ticket prices are as follows: Admission is free to students, faculty and staff. Tickets cost $3 for adults in the community and $1 for senior citizens and high school students.
The play is rated “M” for mature audiences. Requests for accommodations related to a disability need to be made to Terri Spencer at (417) 625-9393 at least 72 hours before the program. 

Contemporary Foreign Film Series continues

The Contemporary Foreign Film continuing education class continues next Friday, Oct. 5, with a showing of the provocative and disturbing Heading South (Vers le sud) (France, 2005) at 7 p.m. in Cornell Auditorium, Plaster Hall.  The film probes the tensions and jealousies at stake when three women on holiday  who meet at a Haitian tourist resort find themselves competing for the sexual attention of a young islander.  At the center of the film are searing performances by Charlotte Rampling as the professor and Ménothy César as the object of her desire.

This film will be shown as part of a Missouri Southern Continuing Education class. The cost of the class is $10 per person per semester and those interested may register before the film Friday evening. Subsequent films will be shown this semester on Oct.19, Nov. 2, Nov. 16 and Dec. 7.

Grad joins Marshall Space Flight Center staff

MSSU graduate Brandon M. Brown, a native of Webb City, Mo., has been named deputy chief financial officer at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

Brown, who joined NASA and the Marshall Center this month, will assist the chief financial officer in overseeing implementation and administration of all integrated Marshall and NASA financial management systems tied to the NASA field center's annual budget of approximately $2.6 billion.

"Mr. Brown’s professional skills and abilities extend beyond the scope of traditional financial management," said Pam Cucarola, chief financial officer at Marshall."His skills and experience make him uniquely qualified to serve in this position in the Marshall Center's high-tech science and engineering environment."

Five from MSSU at Student Retention Symposium

Five Missouri Southern faculty and administrators recently made a presentation at the National Symposium on Student Retention.  The event was held in Milwaukee Sept. 24 -26. It is sponsored by the Consortium for Student Retention Data Exchange (CSRDE) at the University of Oklahoma. 

Missouri Southern has been a member of the Consortium since 1997. The presentation was entitled: “Life after a Foundations of Excellence Study:  How one institution implemented initiatives as a result of the FYE study that show promise in improving student success.” 

Presenters included: Delores Honey, Assessment and Institutional Research; Richard Miller, Social Science, Scott Wells, Biology; Kelly Wilson, Student Support Center; and Juan Vazquez, Mathematics.

Delores Honey also facilitated a session on issues related to strengthening the first-year experience for all students.

Gockel Symposium presentations to air on KGCS-TV

Taped presentations of this fall's Gockel Symposium presentations, as part of the China Semester, will be shown on KGCS-TV. The morning session, featuring Chen Jian who discusses the "China Challenge" will air at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9.

The evening session, which featured the Chen Jian and Henry Rosemont discussing China, will air at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17. The programs are being presented as part of the "MSSU Lecture Series" of programs airing on KGCS-TV.

"We realize that some people may be unable to attend these presentations on campus, so being able to tape them and air them for area viewers helps Missouri Southern reach out into the community with the international issues discussions," says Judy Stiles, KGCS-TV.

KGCS-TV may be seen on UHF channel 57, Cable One Channel 7 and Mediacom Channel 77. The station is operated as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.

Penny-a-Vote decides "Grooviest Professor"

 

Students, faculty, staff, and alumni will have the opportunity to vote for their Grooviest Professor during Homecoming week at MSSU.

To promote this year’s “Let the Good Times Roar” Homecoming theme, the MSSU Alumni Association is hosting a Penny-a-Vote Contest.  All faculty, staff, alumni, and students are encouraged to vote for their “Grooviest Professor” during homecoming week.  The winning male and female professors will have the opportunity to participate in a disco dance during the Homecoming Picnic. 

Jars will be placed in Billingsly Student Center Monday, Oct. 8, through Thursday, Oct. 11.  Each penny is worth one vote.  The male and female professor with the most money collected by 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, will then be declared the winner on Friday at the Homecoming Picnic. 

Ten faculty members have been selected to participate in this contest. The candidates, in alphabetical order, are Bud Clark, Music; Glenn Coltharp, Education; Joy Dworkin, English; Linda Hand, Mathematics; T.R. Hanrahan, Communication; William Huffman, Business; Brenda Jackson, Theatre; Vickie Roettger, Biology; Bart Tatum, Athletics; and Ree Wells, Social Sciences.

The 5 Browns interviewed today on Southern Serenade

The 5 Browns

The 5 Browns, 3 sisters and 2 brothers ranging in age from 22 to 28, will be interviewed by Jeff Skibbe, KXMS, during this Friday's Southern Serenade between 5-6 p.m. Tagged by the press as "The Fab Five," these talented pianists all attended the Juilliard School of Music together.

They have received extraordinary press coverage and have made innumerable guest appearances on shows ranging from Oprah, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Performance Today (recipient of the 2007 Karl Haas Prize for Music Education by 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International).

In 2005, The 5 Browns CD spent eight weeks at the top of "Billboard" magazine's classical music chart. "No Boundaries," their second CD, was number one on the classical chart for 21 weeks. Their latest CD is called Browns in Blue, showcasing their 50 fingers at the keyboards in works ranging from Schubert to Gershwin and beyond.

Free Spanish class for kids

The International Language Resource Center at Missouri Southern State University is sponsoring a free Spanish class for children age 8-13. The class is designed for children with no prior knowledge of Spanish.

Classes will be held in the Story Telling Room at the Joplin Public Library.

Classes will be held from 4 – 5 p.m. each Tuesday starting on Oct. 9 and concluding on Dec. 4. The class will be taught by Sergio Rodriguez.

International photo contest

Who:  Students, faculty and staff who traveled abroad on a Missouri Southern sponsored trip in 2006 or 2007.

What: Photos must be representative of student study abroad. Entries must be printed on 8 1/2 X 11 paper or smaller. Electronic entries not accepted.

When: Entries must be received by 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 5, at the Institute of International Studies Office, Webster Hall, room 337 (3rd floor).

Where: Photos will be displayed Nov. 14 at the Study Abroad Fair, 9 a.m. —1 p.m., 3rd floor ballroom, Billingsly Student Center.

How: Prizes will be awarded in separate categories for students and faculty/staff, for first, second, third, with recognition for  honorable mention. Fair attendees will separately vote for a best of show in both categories, with that prize being announced Nov. 15.

Photos will be judged by a professional panel. Submitted photos become the property of  the Institute of International Studies and Missouri Southern State University, and can be used in advertising and promotional products. Contest is sponsored jointly by the IIS and MSSU, with the assistance of a Public Relations Class taught by Brenda Kilby, Communication.   • Nov. 28: 57th Annual Conference Austin, Texas -- "Teaching literacy is a staircase: revisited Metaphors as a third-space for discussing beliefs about teaching."

Suzanna Long, SOBA Marketing, has been appointed to the Section/Roundtable Records Retention Compliance Working Group of the Society of American Archivists.

An essay by Art Saltzman, English, "Duck-Rabbit Variations," which appeared last year in Baltimore Review, has been listed among the Notable Essays of 2006 in Best American Essays: 2007, ed. David Foster Wallace (Houghton Mifflin). The essay appears in Saltzman's new collection, Solve for X, due to be published by University of South Carolina Press at the end of this month.
