Chinese Theatre performances offer great entertainment Two performances of Chinese theater, one from Taiwan, the other from mainland China will be presented at Missouri Southern State University during the first week of October. * The Diabolo Dance Theater of Taiwan will perform at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3 in Taylor Performing Arts Center. The performance is free and open to the public. The Diabolo Dance Theater of Taiwan has merged traditional "diabolo" (juggling props consisting of a spool which is whirled and tossed on a string tied to two sticks) with contemporary dance and gymnastics, becoming the first artistic performing group to combine these creative elements with theatrical ideas.
* Kung Fu Theater: "Tales from the Beijing Opera" will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6 in Webster Hall Auditorium at MSSU. It is also free and open to all.
Kung Fu Theatre: "Tales from the Beijing Opera" is a series of short stories drawn from Chinese history, mythology and folklore. In spite of the high art connotations of its name, Beijing Opera is loud and colorful.
In a full show, several 20- to 45-minute long stories are performed using English and Chinese dialogue, music, dance, mime, acrobatics, stage fighting, and singing. This show is as visual and exciting as it is cultural and educational. The performers are professionally trained Chinese Beijing Opera actors, most of whom began performing before the age of ten. Empire District Donates Computers to IEP Classroom Empire District Electric has donated four surplus computers to the International English Program (IEP) classroom at Missouri Southern for student use and instruction. The IEP, in conjunction with Joplin NALA Literacy Program, began work under a Phi Kappa Phi grant to in August of this year to enhance English instruction in NALA's downtown location. This resulted in the need for the computer equipment at that facility. The IEP had moved its computers to participate in the community literacy program to provide a platform for instructional technology. At the time, it was thought that upgraded computers on campus would meet the classroom need. However, workload and budgetary concerns resulted in a delay in the upgrade and the arrival of replacement computers. Although the IEP eventually will receive the upgraded computers, the Empire District donation greatly assists student instruction in the interim. Listening programs, grammar and reading programs, and vocabulary development programs all depend on the classroom work stations. "We would like to thank Empire District, Myron McKinney, Chair of the Board of Directors and retired president and CEO, as well as Ivan Johnson, Manager of Systems and Data Base Administration, and Daren Simmons from the Empire IT department. We truly appreciate their help in securing and setting up computers for our students and faculty," says Bill Trudeau, IEP.
