MSSU makes the Diverse Top-100 List

Missouri Southern's School of Education has distinguished itself as one of the 100 top schools in the nation for diversity - according to a nationally-known academic journal.

Editors of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education have informed Glenn Coltharp, Dean of the School of Education, that MSSU is included in the magazine's unique "Top 100 Degree Producers" list.

Missouri Southern takes its place on the "Top 100" list due to the number of baccalaureate degrees conferred upon Native Americans. MSSU's degrees conferred in 2005-2006 to Native Americans equaled or exceeded many other colleges and universities in the nation, several much larger than MSSU.

Missouri Southern's matched or surpassed the numbers for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, California State-Sacramento, University of Oregon, Indiana University and University of Arkansas-Ft. Smith.

Diverse allows schools in America to introduce themselves to the 200,000 + strong higher education community as well as thousands of readers outside the industry. The Top 100 editions are one-of-a kind comparisons of America's colleges and universities and are quickly becoming "must reads" in the higher education community.

This year's report includes degrees that have been conferred during the 2005-2006 academic year and reported to the U.S. Department of Education's National Center through Education Statistics (NCES) through the Completions Survey of the Integrated Post-secondary Education Data Set (IPEDS).

Lists included are determined by students' self reported responses regarding racial or ethnic status. When making reports to federal government entities, institutions have to "map" categories to fit federal categories. U.S. citizens have to be put into such categories as Black, non-Hispanic, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Hispanic, White and race/ethnicity unknown.

    Spanish Language Village underway

Villa Española, a Spanish Language Village, is taking place this week on campus. A total of 74 campers from four states are taking part through Friday, July 20.

Tatiana Karmanova, International Language Resource Center, says the annual activity offers a taste of Spanish-speaking cultures for children ages 8 to 13 who spend a week at MSSU. Participants choose from residential or day camp.

Villagers will learn basic Spanish language skills, culture, geography, history, songs, dances and crafts. The faculty and staff include native speakers of Spanish, American Spanish teachers and students who have studied and lived in Spanish-speaking countries.

Russians touring Missouri Southern, Show-Me State

A group of three Russian students and six administrators from Yugra State University in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, are visiting Missouri Southern and Missouri this week.   The delegation is looking for ways to develop cooperative programs and exchanges in the United States, according to Tatiana Karmanova, International Language Resource Center.

An International Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the promotion of International education exchange between Missouri Southern and Yugra State University was signed on the Missouri Southern campus in February of 2006.  It was the first agreement made between a university in the Russian Federation and MSSU.

The agreement called for cooperation between Missouri Southern and Yugra State to promote an international educational exchange. Specific programs will be developed and added to the agreement as the relationship matures. Project managers will take responsibility for promoting, encouraging and developing specific cooperative or joint programs.

Yugra State University is located in the autonomous Okrug area of west-central Siberai. Khanty-Mansiysk is a city of approximately 35,000 residents.

The Okrug area is one of the most economically stable areas in the Russian Federation. The area is ranked first in industrial production, first in oil and gas production and second in gas extraction in the Federation. The timber and fish industries are also major industries in the region.

    Blunt announces Acquisition Grant

Southwest Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt’s office has informed the Chairman of the Teacher Education Department at Missouri Southern State University that a five year, $1.335 million grant has been approved to help teachers learn the best means of helping students acquire the English language. The “English Language Acquisition” grant from the U.S. Department of Education has first year funding of $267,344.

“We are excited by this opportunity,” said Al Cade, Teacher Education Department head. “There has been an influx of students, most of them speaking Spanish, into local schools in K-12 throughout the area. Teachers don’t have to speak Spanish to help these students transition into English, but this program will teach them the skills to do it more effectively.”

Congressman Blunt welcomed the added assistance in moving students to literacy in English.  “English is a common bond that binds our nation together. Our local public schools are seeing more foreign-language students who lack literacy and proficiency in English. Without the basic skills of communication in English, the ability to learn for the entire class can suffer. This program offers new help to teachers in learning the skills that can move foreign-language students to acquire English faster, making them able to better understand and acquire knowledge about our nation, its heritage, culture and founding principles.”

The English Language Acquisition Grant program will pay for tuition and books and offer professional development classes and on-site field training in an eight county area served by Missouri Southern State University.  The program will also be available to students in teacher training at Missouri Southern.
