FERPA Presentation canceled Meetings on Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) sponsored by the Registrar's office for today have been canceled. Cheryl Dobson, Registrar, says speaker Brenda Selman of the University of Missouri-Columbia has notified her that she is unable to make the trip to Joplin. Cheryl says the presentation will be rescheduled for later in the year. MLK Speaker and Luncheon rescheduled for February 5
Bakari Kitwana is co-founder of the first ever National Hip-Hop Political Convention and the author of The Hip-Hop Generation: Young Blacks and the Crisis in African American Culture. The former executive editor of The Source, Kitwana has been acknowledged as an expert on hip-hop politics by the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, CNN, The O'Reilly Factor and other leading news outlets, his writings have appeared in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Savoy, The Nation, the Village Voice, Black Book and other publications. His new book Why White Kids Love Hip-Hop: Wankstas, Wiggers, Wannabes and the New Reality of Race in America (Basic Books, June 2005) is about race and hip-hop culture. Kitwana holds Masters degrees in English and Education from the University of Rochester. A free luncheon immediately following lecture in BSC Connor Ballroom at 12 noon. Al Cade, Teacher Education, says the Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Breakfast has been rescheduled for 7 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12 in the Billingsly Student Center. Michelle Ducree will speak. The previous RSVP list will be maintained. Art Faculty, others to exhibit The work of MSSU art faculty, retired art faculty, and others who have taught classes will be on display in the MSSU Spiva Art Gallery through today, Friday, Feb. 2. Contemporary Film Series continues The Contemporary Film Series will continue this semester as a Friday night continuing education class. To enroll, simply come to the first film tonight, Friday, Feb. 2, and pay tuition of $10 per person. Tonight's film is Joyeux Noel (France, Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, 2005; 116 minute). The film recreates the real-life story of how Scottish, French and German troops in the trenches of World War I spontaneously declared a truce and came together to celebrate Christmas, in what turns about to be a life-changing event both for the soldiers and for two civilian musicians who find themselves at the front. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film of 2005. The film, presented on DVD format, begins at 7 p.m. tonight at Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall. Your tuition payment will go toward purchase of videos for our film series and will entitle you to attend seven acclaimed foreign films, none of which have yet had public screenings in Joplin. Former Ambassador Perkins to speak
The Social Science Department at MSSU will host Dr. Edward J. Perkins at 7 p.m., tonight, in Webster Hall Auditorium. The appearance by Dr. Perkins is the result of a Teaching American History Grant awarded to the Carthage R-IX School District which is working in partnership with MSSU. Dr. Perkins enjoyed a long and distinguished diplomatic career. After holding a number of posts in the U.S. military and Foreign Service he was appointed Ambassador to Liberia in 1985. He then served as Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa from 1986-89. In 1992 he was appointed as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and U.S. Representative in the UN Security Council, where he served from 1992-1993. Dr. Perkins served as Ambassador to Australia from 1993-1996. On August 31, 1996, Dr. Perkins retired with the rank of Career Minister in the United States Foreign Service. He is currently William J. Crowe Chair in Geopolitics and Executive Director of the International Programs Center at the University of Oklahoma. College Goal Sunday College Goal Sunday, a program designed to assist college-bound high schools students in the completion and filing of important student financial aid documents, will return for a fourth year to the Show-Me State. Kathy Feith, Financial Aid, says the program will take place in workshop format from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 11 at Cornell Auditorium on campus. The workshops also will be held primarily on college campuses located throughout the state and will be staffed by financial aid experts from a variety of institutions. There is no charge to participate. The workshop focuses on assisting students and families is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. It is required by most educational institutions to determine eligibility for a wide range of grants, loans and scholarships. The website, located at www.collegegoalmissouri.com contains basic information about college financial aid and provides information regarding specific program locations, a list of items needed for the event and driving directions. Visions Unlimited Highlights Fish Hatchery The February edition of the television program Visions Unlimited takes viewers on a tour of the Neosho Fish Hatchery, and explores the operations of the hatchery. Host Betty Marty visits with hatchery director, Dave Hendrix and Neosho author, historian and member of the "Friends of the Fish Hatchery" organization, Kay Hively. They share information about hatchery operations, special programs, and community involvement. KGCS programming may be seen on UHF channel 57, Cable One channel 7 and Mediacom channel 77 in the Joplin area. The fish hatchery program may be seen on the following times and dates: * 6 p.m. Wed. Feb. 7 The program may also be seen on Sunday evening through the Southern Instructional Television (SITV) cable channels airing on cable systems around the region. Langston Hughes celebration Feb. 16 The Fifteenth Annual Langston Hughes Celebration will take place at 7 p.m., Friday Feb. 16 in Webster Hall Auditorium at MSSU. Hughes, born in Joplin in 1902, was a prolific writer and key figure in the "Harlem Renaissance" movement of the 1920s - 30s. He died in New York City in 1967. The featured speaker for the event will be writer and past Langston Hughes Prize recipient Dr. R. Baxter Miller. He will speak on "`I Heard Ma Rainey': Inspiration in Langston Hughes." Dr. Miller was honored as one of only nine Senior Lilly Teaching Fellows at the University of Georgia in 1994-95. He has been a United Negro College Fund Distinguished Scholar at Xavier University in New Orleans and Mellon Visiting Professor at the University of San Francisco. Executive editor of The Langston Hughes Review, he is a past president of the Langston Hughes Society and founder of the Division of Black American Literature and Culture in the Modern Language Association. Doris Walters, English, says the MSSU Jazz Quintet will play. A drawing for teachers and prospective teachers will be held for an activity book called Langston's Legacy; 101 Ways to Celebrate the Life and Work of Langston Hughes. Ten copies of the book will be given away, along with handouts about a Hughes' related program called the Dream Flag Project. The event, co-sponsored by the Joplin NAACP, is free and open to the public. Presentation in Connection with Black History Month “W.E.B. DuBois, Democracy and World War” is the title of a presentation slated for 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 13 in Webster Hall Auditorium. In his later years, DuBois came into conflict with the government due to his vocal criticism of the policies of the American government. He eventually moved to Ghana and died there in 1963. The presentation, sponsored by the Social Science Department at MSSU, is free and open to the public. Come Chill with the Lions at Legacy Day Legacies of alumni will receive the opportunity to find out what Missouri Southern is all about at this year’s annual Legacy Day. A legacy is a kid lucky enough to have one or even two relatives that attended or graduated from MSSU. On Saturday, Feb. 24, these legacies will have the opportunity to chill with some of Missouri Southern’s fellow Lions and have a little fun at the same time. An exact schedule will be released soon. The English trumpeter Alison Balsom recently signed an exclusive three-disc contract with EMI Records. The rising star is on the concert circuit with an instrument that, she admits, is normally associated with male performers. Host Jeff Skibbe talked to her in London this past week and their 12-minute conversation will air on today's edition of "Southern Serenade" from 5-6 p.m. on 88.7KXMS. Balsom studied trumpet at the Guildhall School of Music, the Paris Convervatoire, and with Hakan Hardenburger. She has performed at the BBC Proms, Barbican's Mostly Mozart Festival with the Bamberg ( Germany) Symphony and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. Gorlock Gala MSSU's Speech and Debate Squad competed in the Gorlock Gala
at Webster University in St. Louis Jan 25-28. A total of 96 tournament debaters from 42 colleges and universities representing 15 states took part. In the junior LD division, freshman Richard Brown, Joplin, qualified for the quarter-final round of debate with a 5-1 record. Brown was defeated by a participant from Creighton University. Richard Brown, Whitney Hart, and Matt Templeton joined fellow teammates as national tournament qualifiers this weekend. The debate National championships will be held at Berry College in April. The team is traveling next to the Air Force Academy Feb. 9-11 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Russia and Sweden Tour: Highlights include Kremlin, Red Square, Hermitage/Winter Palace, Peter and Paul Fortress, Vasa Ship; Stockholm Town Hall.
