Nursing venture progressing

Although the weather delayed some examinations, a joint venture between UMKC School of Nursing and MSSU Theater Department has progressed well. The UMKC graduate students in nursing must perform a mock office visit as a clinical final for their Health Assessment and Clinical Reasoning course in the nurse practitioner track.

In the past Joplin site UMKC students traveled to Kansas City for testing. This year through the efforts of Jay Fields, head of the Theatre Department at Missouri Southern and Anita Singleton of UMKC a total of 17 students were tested in the MSSU Graduate Center.

MSSU theater students assumed patient roles for the testing using scripted information and improvisation. An office in the Graduate Center at MSSU became a mock exam room for the event. The UMKC student interviewed and examined the "patient" for a physical while looking for problems. The session was recorded to a DVD.

The DVD with a written note of the examination are graded by UMKC faculty. The theater students receive a grade for their participation in the project. This interdisciplinary approach was well received by the students involved from both programs.

Legislative interns from MSSU sign contracts

Legislative Interns from Missouri Southern State University put pen to paper to execute their service contracts Tuesday, Dec, 6 in Room 223 of Webster Hall on the MSSU campus.

The Missouri Legislature will be in session from the first Wednesday following the first Monday of January through mid-May. During this time, more than 1,000 bills will be written and filed, and around 100 of them will actually be passed. Interns are a key part of the legislative session, as offices are understaffed and there is much to be done in five months.

Interns are given a wide variety of tasks, depending on the needs of the office. Legislative interns may be involved in the following activities:

* Helping constituents via phone, email, or postage mail;
* Accompanying legislators to hearings or to the House or Senate floor;
* Attending committee hearings without legislators to take notes and report back to legislators
* Tracking bills while the House or Senate is in session;
* Researching legislative ideas;
* Leading tours of the Capitol;
* Organizing binders of bills, votes, and other duties.

For more information about legislative interns from MSSU, call Thomas Simpson, Social Sciences, at ext. 3112. For a list of students signing contracts, visit http://www.mssu.edu/news/interns06.htm.
