Omicron Delta Kappa to initiate students, faculty member

Thirty-eight student members and one faculty members will be initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), the national leadership honor society, at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 12 in the Connor Ballroom of Billingsly Student Center.

The society recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. Membership in ODK is considered to be a mark of highest distinction and honor.

Today's Brown Bag

Betsy Griffin, Academic Affairs, says today's Brown Bag Lunch and presentation for faculty/staff will feature Willie Edwards, Teacher Education, speaking on the topic French Public Schools.

The presentation will be from 12:10 to 12:50 in Room 310 of the Billingsly Student Center. Pick up your free lunch at the mini-buffet. Lunch is provided as a courtesy of Academic Affairs and Sodexho food services.

Voice majors ONSTAGE Thursday night

The MSSU Music Department will present ONSTAGE, the annual Voice Majors Recital at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16 in Webster Hall Auditorium.

Under the direction of Susan K. Smith, Music, and Jennica White, Student Services, this entertaining event will showcase the talents of thirty singers in staged scenes from The Marriage of Figaro, The Barber of Seville, and Carmen among others.

Musical theatre scenes will take up the subject of music itself with such songs as “I Love a Piano” and “Thank You For The Music” from Mamma Mia? and “The Song That Goes Like This” and “Whatever Happened to My Part?” from Monty Python’s Spamalot. The event is free and open to the public.

France Semester Activities

Friday, Nov. 10
10 a.m., Webster Hall Auditorium -- "Ocular Anxiety and the Pink Tea Cup: Edgar Degas's Woman with a Bandaged Eye." Marni Kessler of the Department of Art History at the University of Kansas, will analyze this work by Degas as it relates to his internal conflicts surrounding his own failing eyesight, and ophthalmologic science in the 19th century. Free and open to the public.

11 a.m., Webster Hall Auditorium -- "Unmasking Manet's Morisot." Marni Kessler focuses upon a group of Manet's portraits of artist Berthe Morisot between 1868-74. She argues that the paintings tell less about the sitter than the painter. Free and open to the public.

Tuesday, Nov. 14
7 p.m., Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall -- French Film Festival presents The Hole (Le Trou). Directed by Jacques Becker, this beautifully detailed, based-on-fact 1960 thriller about an attempted prison break features outstanding performances by non-professionals in real locations. Free and open to the public.

Wednesday, Nov. 15
12 noon, Phinney Recital Hall. Brown Bag for MSSU Students: "The Golden Age of French Music: Does It Belong in the Past or the Present?" Cheryl Cifelli, Music, briefly discusses how France became a center for music development and where it is now, beginning in the early 1000s and ending in the Avant Gard. Students must pick up free lunch ticket in Webster 337C at least 24 hours in advance.


Syrian Bride to show tonight on campus

The Contemporary Foreign Film Series will present The Syrian Bride (Israel, Germany, France, 2004; 97 minutes) at 7 p.m., tonight, Friday, Nov. 10 in Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall.

Directed by Carlos Sorin and hot on location in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, the film focuses on Mona, who faces a wedding that will take her into Syria, separating her forever from her family in the Druze village of Majdal Shams. The film won the Best Film award at the Montreal Film Festival.

Newsmakers to focus on highway projects

An upcoming edition of the public affairs program Newsmakers features an interview with Becky Baltz, District Engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation. Baltz will discuss transportation and roads with program host, Judy Stiles, Communication.

This program takes a look at the areas of responsibility for the MO Dept. of Transportation in the Joplin Area. The District Engineer will provide an update on projects such at the I-249 bypass, Highway 71 to Arkansas, and the Bella Vista bypass. Other topics discussed include work zone safety, seat belt usage, and winter driving/road maintenance.

The program will air at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13 and Wednesday, Nov. 15 on KGCS-TV. It will air again at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 on KOAM-TV and again at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 19 on KOZJ Public TV.

KGCS-TV airs on C able One channel 7, Mediacom channel 77 and UHF channel 57.

Excursion to Russia planned

Becky Gallemore, Teacher Education, announces an EF Educational Tours excursion to Russia. Highlights include, but are not limited to: Kremlin, Red Square, Amory Palace Museum, Hermitage/Winter Palace, Peter and Paul Fortress and the St. Petersburg History Museum. An optional travel package will also take travelers through Sweden.

A meeting of those interested in the trip will be held at 3 p.m.on Wednesday, Nov. 15 in Room 218 of Taylor Hall.

Some other optional tours include Petrodvorets, -Sergiev Posad and Drottningholm Palace. Tour includes round trip airfare, complete European breakfast and dinner daily, full-time bilingual EF Tour Director, sightseeing tours led by licensed local guides, seven visits to special attractions and more.

Study Abroad Fair provides information

Missouri Southern will hold its annual Study Abroad Fair from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15 on the third floor of the Billingsly Student Center.

MSSU has a wide variety of study abroad trips planned for 2007. The destinations include Belize, British Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, China, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Ireland, Britain, England, Spain, Italy, Kenya and Mexico. Other study abroad opportunities include Summer at Oxford University, Summer in Sweden, International Student Exchange Program and bilateral exchange agreements, Chile and China exchange programs and the Missouri London Program.

Faculty leaders from all of the trips will be on hand at the Study Abroad Fair answering questions and providing applications. Students with full-time status and at least a 2.5 GPA can receive up to $1,500 grants toward the cost of the trips, which all result in academic credit.

Behind the Bricks

Jerry Williams, Lifelong Learning, is hosting a new show entitled Behind the Bricks. This TV show highlights the many different educational opportunities on campus. The show will inform the public about MSSU and can be seen on both KGCS and SITV stations. The thirty minute program will highlight two areas on campus. This week’s program features the departments of Criminal Justice and CAMT. Tune in at 7 p.m. Wednesday evenings at and 10 p.m. Mondays.

Student Health Fair next week

The Student Health Fair will be held Thursday Nov. 16 according to Darren Fullerton, Recreation and Wellness. Please encourage your students to take part.

The MSSU Wellness Program has teamed up with the Freeman Health Systems to make this year's event a free health screening for students. In addition to the variety of wellness services, participants will have the opportunity to get information on a number of health and wellness issues. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout.

The Free Wellness Services include testing/screenings for blood pressure, blood cholesterol, lipid panel, glucose, body fat composition and osteoporosis.

Please remember that for the above-listed blood work, participants should fast for at least 8 hours prior to the test. Participants can still drink water, and should continue to take any regular medications. For additional information, please contact Darren at ext. 9392.

AAUW event to feature special program, brunch, sale

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) will feature a special Music Theatre Tribute featuring Susan Smith, Music, and her students, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at the First Community Church in Joplin. The presentation will be part of a benefit for the AAUW scholarship at Missouri Southern.

Those attending can enjoy brunch for $13, along with a silent auction and sale of baked goods, "junque" items and more. Reservations can be made by calling (417) 781-6478.

Women with associate through advanced degrees may take part in AAUW. Meetings are held at 10 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month at Twin Hills Country Club in Joplin. For membership information, call Sue Cowen, Membership Chair, at (417) 624-5466.

Senior Exhibit at Spiva

Works by three senior art department students at Missouri Southern State University are featured in a Senior Art Exhibit now on display in the Spiva Art Gallery at MSSU. The exhibit is free to the public.

The exhibit is a fulfillment of the graduation requirement for art majors at Missouri Southern.

The students are Elisabeth Humphreys, senior studio art major from Joplin, Lynsey Skaggs, senior graphic art major from Neosho, and Katarina McCleary, senior art education major from Carterville. The works presented are in a variety of media.

The exhibit will run through Dec. 1. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Susan Craig, Project STAY, gave a workshop at the Southwest Center for Educational Excellence entitled "Helping Students Succeed: Using Therapeutic Techniques in the Classroom to Improve Student Motivation."

Ree Wells, Social Science, attended the 32nd Annual Meetings of the Mid-South Sociological Association in Lafayette, Louisiana, Oct. 25-28. This year's theme was "Sociology in Ill-Starred Times: Crisis, Survival and Reconstruction." Ree is a member of the association's "Committee on Women" in the profession.
