Wellness Program hosts National health screening.

Life Line Screenings will be held at MSSU on Nov. 16 according to Darren Fullerton, Recreation and Wellness.

Residents living in and around the local communities can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. Through preventive screenings, the risk of having a stroke can be greatly reduced.

Screenings are fast, painless and low cost. They involve the use of ultrasound technology, and scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which can lead to a stroke, aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which are a strong predictor of heart disease. Also offered for men and women, is a bone density screening to assess their risk for osteoporosis.

Life Line Screening was established in 1993, and has since become the nation’s leading provider of vascular screenings. Over 45 ultrasound teams are on staff to travel to your local community, bringing the screenings to you. These non-invasive, inexpensive and painless, ultrasound tests help people identify their risk for stroke, vascular diseases or osteoporosis early enough for their physician to begin preventive procedures.

For more information regarding the screenings or to schedule an appointment, call 1-800-324-1851. Pre-registration is required.

Messiah rehearsals begin Nov. 5

The opening rehearsal for Handel's oratorio, the Messiah has been scheduled from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5 according to Bud Clark, Music, Messiah director. Continuing rehearsals are scheduled for the same time each Sunday in November and the first two Sundays in December with a full run-through at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 11.

The production will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 12, in Taylor Performing Arts Center. A chorus of approximately 200 voices is expected to take part in this 13th performance presented on the Joplin campus.

"We will have an outstanding orchestra of around 45 performers from the Joplin and surrounding area accompanying a Joplin community chorus that will include the Missouri Southern Concert Chorale," Clark said. "It is a powerful, moving work, that is as delightful to perform as it is to listen to. I have had many community singers tell me that unless we sing Handel's Messiah, the Christmas season isn't complete for them."

Those wanting to take part should come to the first rehearsal in Room 208 of the Music Department (adjoining Taylor Auditorium), or call Bud at (417) 625-9562 for additional information.

The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is an ancient Aztec celebration of the memory of deceased ancestors that is celebrated on Nov. 1 (All Saints Day) and Nov. 2 (All Souls Day).

The day is a national holiday in Mexico and is celebrated in Mexican-American communities in the United States. Mexicans celebrate the Day of the Dead joyfully, and though it occurs at the same time as Halloween, the traditional mood is much brighter with emphasis on celebrating the continuation of life with the belief that death is not the end but the beginning.
