Lieutenant Governor to hold news conference this morning Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder will hold a news conference at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 22 in Room 310 of Billingsly Student Center. Mr. Kinder will be on the MSSU campus to discuss his support for a proposal calling for the sale of assets of the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA) to fund university capital projects and new scholarship programs. At Missouri Southern State University, the initiative would provide about $19 million to help fund construction of a Health Sciences building. Caws to speak on Surrealism, Pablo Picasso, Sept. 28-29 Mary Ann Caws, Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature, English, and French at the Graduate School of the City University of New York, will deliver lectures on Thursday, Sept. 28 and Friday, Sept. 29 in Webster Hall Auditorium. Both lectures are free. The public is invited.
Caws is a Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature, English, and French at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. Her many areas of interest in 20th century avant-garde literature and art include Surrealism, poets René Char and André Breton, Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury group, and artists Robert Motherwell, Joseph Cornell, and Pablo Picasso. Conceptually, one of her primary themes has been the relationship between image and text. Dr. Caws’ books include: Pablo Picasso (Critical Lives series); To the Boathouse: A Memoir; Marcel Proust (Illustrated Lives); Robert Motherwell with Pen and Brush; Virginia Woolf (Illustrated Lives); Joseph Cornell’s Theater of the Mind; and Picasso’s Weeping Woman: The Life and Art of Dora Maar. Strait wins MACADA award Dr. Tia Strait, Dean of the School of Technology, is the recipient of the Outstanding Academic Advising Administrator Award from the Missouri Academic Advising Association (MACADA). The award was presented Sept. 14 at MACADA’s 14th-Annual Conference at Tan-Tar-A at the Lake of the Ozarks. In recognition of her achievement, Dr. Strait received $100, a plaque and a one year-membership to the Missouri Academic Advising Association. The MACADA awards are open to anyone who serves as an academic advisor, faculty academic advisor or advising administrator and is employed by a regionally accredited post-secondary institution in Missouri. Only one nominee in each of three categories from each institution is considered. The Outstanding Academic Advising Administrator Award which Dr. Strait won is open to an educator who provides direct academic advising services but whose primary responsibility is as an administrator or director of an academic advising program. Today's Brown Bag Conrad Gubera, Social Sciences, Linda Hand, Mathematics, and Sam Claussen, Theatre, will present "Sun--Stones-Shadows and Serpents: Summer Study in the Ancient Mayan City Cichen, Itza," at the noon-hour Brown Bag Lunch for faculty and staff today, Friday Sept. 22. The Joplin Concert Series (Joplin Community Concert Association) will present Joyce Yang, the12th Van Cliburn silver medal winner, with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra at Taylor Performing Arts Center tonight, Friday, Sept. 22. Cynthia Hukill, Music says Joyce Yang will take part in a Lecture/Demonstration this afternoon from 3 -3:45 p.m. this afternoon in Webster Hall Auditorium. Ms. Yang, Silver Medalist in the 2005 Van Cliburn Piano Competition, will perform the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Symphony Friday tonight Taylor Performing Arts Center. The concert is free to MSSU students with ID. The Lecture/ Demonstration is free and open to everyone. "I am especially urging everyone to help publicize the Lecture/Demonstration so that as many as possible may enjoy this unique opportunity," Cynthia says. International Film Festival to present Daybreak The Missouri Southern State University Institute of International Studies and the Missouri Southern Film Society are sponsoring the 45th Annual International Film Festival. The film Daybreak (Le Jour se Léve), directed by Marcel Carne, will be shown at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 26 in Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall (formerly Matthews Hall). Jean Gabin gives a flawless performance as a sensitive man who commits a crime of passion. This is an award-winning, remarkable cinematic achievement. Burns to demonstrate techniques at Visiting Artist Workshop
The one day workshop will begin at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25 in room 111 (Ceramics Studio) of the Department of Art. The artist’s lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in room 107 of the Department. The workshop and lecture is free and open to all students and the public. Burns will discuss his ideas of developing a personal style in one’s work as featured in the February 2006 article he authored in Ceramics Monthly magazine. Burns also will give a visual presentation showcasing how these techniques and concepts are featured in his personal artwork. “I enjoy vessels that are equally complete standing alone or in use," Burns states. "Rich subtleties and organic influences are important. It should look as if it grew that way - rather than being ‘made’." Chili Cook-Off planned for October in BSC The First Annual Homecoming Chili Cook-Off is scheduled for the noon hour on Monday Oct. 9 on the first floor of the Billingsly Student Center. Here is a list of guidelines that will need to be followed in order to participate: • Cooking areas must be completely set up by 12 noon the day of the event. Awards will be given to participants for: Best Overall Taste, Best Name of Chili and Best Presentation of Chili. A panel of judges will make the decision on the winner. Faculty/staff students and others on hand will sample the individual chili selections. Awards will be given at 1 p.m. in Billingsly Student Center, bottom floor. Forms must be returned to the Alumni Office no later than Thursday, Oct. 5. The MSSU Alumni Association is hosting a Penny-A-Vote Contest to help promote this year’s “Start Your Engines” Homecoming theme. All faculty, staff, alumni, and students are encouraged to vote during homecoming week. The winning male and female professors will get the opportunity to test out their ability to race “Flintstone style” at this year’s homecoming picnic. Jars will be placed in Billingsly Student Center from Monday, Oct. 9 through Thursday, Oct. 12. The male and female professor with the most money collected by 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 will be declared the winner. The winners will wear their costume to classes all of Friday, Oct. 13 and will rev up their engines for a race at the Oval at the Homecoming Picnic previous to the coronation. Energy/Money saving tip: Contemporary Series to feature South African thriller Tsotsi The next Contemporary Foreign Film series selection of the semester is (South Africa, 2005; 94 minutes). Tsotsi, a poor boy living on the margins of Johannesburg, steals a woman’s car but, as he is driving off, discovers a child in the back seat, a discovery that comes to change his life. Tsotsi was the winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2005. This year, the Friday night film series will be offered as a Continuing Education class to avoid prohibitive performance fees. Therefore, those coming to the showing will be invited to enroll in the class and pay tuition of $10 per person. Tuition payments will go toward purchase of videos for our film series. Rod Smith jersey raffle The Athletic Department is selling raffle tickets for a Rod Smith autographed Pro Bowl jersey. The tickets cost $2 for one ticket or three tickets for $5. The jersey is on display in room 148 of Leggett & Platt Athletic Building on campus. Cardinals Add Game to telecast schedule The St. Louis Cardinals have added an over-the-air telecast to their schedule of games, resulting in an additional game airing on KGCS-TV. Judy Stiles, KGCS, says this evening's game at the Houston Astros will be aired over the Cardinals network. Telecast time is 6 p.m. KGCS-TV is operated as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University. Programming may be seen on UHF channel 57, Cable One Channel 7, and Mediacom Channel 77. Spiva Library celebrates commemorative month, week Need a coffee break? The University Java coffee shop in Spiva Library is now open from 4-8 p.m. on Sundays. The Library will give out goodie bags to the first five University Java customers every hour Sunday, Sept. 24. Wayne Thomason, Criminal Justice Department Head, and Tim Wilson, Law Enforcement Academy Coordinator, have been appointed to the Missouri Department of Public Safety-Peace Officer's Standards and Training Curricula Review Committee. The purpose of this committee is to review the current State Mandated Police Training Curricula and to Update, Revise and Recommend changes to the Missouri Peace Officer's Standards and Training Commission.
