The Dining Room Sept. 12-16 in Bud Walton Theatre

The Missouri Southern Theatre Department's 2006-07 season will open with a production of A.R.Gurney’s The Dining Room at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 12-16 in the Bud Walton Theatre at Missouri Southern State University. Jay Fields, Theatre, directs.

The MSSU production is a cast of 18 actors (both faculty members and students) who will play over 50 different roles. The action of the play is comprised of a mosaic of interrelated scenes - some funny, some touching, which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP.

Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.

Theatre faculty members, Sam and Pam Claussen, Lyle Burrow, Brenda Jackson, Gerrie-Ellen Johnston, Jim Lile and Ann Lile, and Bud Clark of the Missouri Southern Music Department join ten theatre students to make this an evening you’ll remember.

Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Box Office hours: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily. Seating is limited. Call (417) 625-3190 for reservations.

Ticket prices are Adults $3; Senior Citizens and high school students $1, and MSSU faculty/staff and students free with ID.

Requests for accommodations related to a disability need to be made to Terri Spencer, Theatre, at (417) 625-9393 at least 72 hours before the program.

Presentation on the French Revolution Monday, Sept. 11

Michael W. Howell, professor of history at the College of the Ozarks, will deliver the presentation “The French Revolution as Viewed through Both Ends of the Binoculars,” at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 11 in Webster Hall Auditorium at Missouri Southern State University.

This presentation begins with a distant view showing the broad outlines of the era of the revolt and its significance. It then concentrates on one small but fascinating episode in 1792.

It is the story of one man’s struggle to get his pay from the government, but it also involves war, insurrection, massacre, civil war, clashing revolutionary heroes and ideas, branches of government at loggerheads, and an argument over whether everyone in the country should speak the official language.

Dr. Howell received his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina after studying in Paris on a Georges Lurcy Fellowship.

Focusing on the political history of the Revolution, Dr. Howell will draw on his article, “Danton, Roland, and Dugas: Politics, Bureaucracy, and Language in the French Revolution,” in The Historian for this presentation.

All films will be shown on DVD in their original versions with English subtitles. Program notes are distributed to promote greater perception.

An informal discussion will be held after each film. For additional information, contact Harrison Kash at (417) 625-9614.

Hailey's split-face creation turns twenty

Michael Hailey, Public Information, is a loyal Missouri Southern alumnus and employee. So it is more than a little ironic that one of Hailey’s most enduring works is one he did during a two-year stint with rival Pittsburg State University. Hailey is the creator of the crimson and gold PSU Gorilla logo, an image that turns 20 this year.

PSU’s Gorilla logo, sometimes referred to as the “split-face” logo because of its contrasting sides, can be seen on almost anything imaginable and in places that sometimes even surprises the creator.

Hailey said he started working on the logo shortly after he arrived at Pitt State in 1984. He tried many drawings but nothing seemed to work.

The major problem with preceding drawings that tried to realistically represent the gorilla. After several frustrating attempts at working with existing concepts, Hailey decided to start from scratch. “I studied the gorilla for a while and tried to determine its essence,” Hailey said. “I decided it was intelligent and extremely powerful. All of that was in the eyes.”

The art seemed to flow naturally from that realization. “When I sat down (to draw), it was there,” Hailey recalled. He said the final image emerged from his first attempt. “I didn’t change a line.”

Twenty years later, the split-face drawing remains the University's logo.

“I was hoping it would last,” Hailey said, “but things change. As an artist, it feels good to have the public respond so well to something you have created.”

Dance Lessons to begin soon g

The Tanglefooters Round Dance Club announces the beginning of dance lessons at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 18. Lessons are given at the Joplin Senior Center, 22nd & Jackson, from 7-8:30 p.m., each Monday. The first lesson is free. Subsequent lessons, which last until the end of June of next year, are $5 per couple, $2.50 per single.

What is round dancing? It's ballroom dance figures done to calls, as in square dancing. What this means is that you are always told what moves to make--you don't have to decide yourself. It's an easy way to learn to dance. Students learn to waltz, cha-cha, two-step, and even some tango and rumba as they progress throughout the year.

Alumnus Jordan to appear on WB's Just Legal

Jordan is a 1997 graduate of Webb City High School and a 2002 graduate from Missouri Southern State University. He obtained his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Acting at UCLA’s School of Theatre, Film and Television in 2005.

The Southern graduate did nearly 40 shows in his time at Missouri Southern. Since arriving in Hollywood, Jordan has guest starred on CSI, Over There, Cold Case, Close to Home, and Just Legal. He also appears in Seraphim Falls which stars Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson.

Environmental Tip: Tip to save money and the environment: Re-use paper to print rough drafts, working copies, lists, etc. on the unprinted side. Place the twice-used paper in a recycling bin.
