Alumnus plays role in new Transformers movie

Air Force Captain Frederic (Adam) Doss, who graduated from Southern in 2000 with a degree in Sociology, completed work on the Dreamworks film Transformers the Movie just prior to being deployed to the Middle East.

In the film two alien races, the Autobots and the Decepticons, bring their battle to Earth, leaving the future of humankind hanging in the balance.

During his time at Missouri Southern Capt. Doss had roles in such diverse productions as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Secret Garden, Camelot and Peter and the Wolf.

School of Business Administration receives grant

The MSSU School of Business Administration has recently received a two year federal “Business and International Education Program” (BIE) grant.

Total federal funding for the project will be $183,000 and MSSU will match with an equal amount for a project total of about $366,000.

The “BIE Program” targets business communities of the 4-state area with a variety of programs and services that will expand the community’s ability to compete in the international marketplace.

“The program’s aim,” according to John Lewis, International Business, who will oversee the effort, “is to increase revenues to regional businesses that are generated from international trade involvement.”

As an example, the grant provides funding for student/faculty research teams to work with area businesses to initiate or increase benefits from international activity. Businesses interested in partnering with MSSU for this project should contact John Lewis (625-9602) or Terry Marion (625-9507).

In addition, MSSU will host of series of ten international trade seminars beginning in late August. Topics to be discussed will include international distributor marketing, general export process, accounting and tax issues. For more details, please contact Terry Marion at (625-9507).

Two from Heartland elected to leadership positions

Terri Bennett, Program Manager of Heartland Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) at Missouri Southern State University, was elected President-Elect of the national organization, the Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (APTAC).

Bernie Franks, Business/Procurement Counselor for MSSU/ Heartland PTAC, was also elected to the post of Regional Director for the group.

Heartland PTAC is part of the Small Business Development Center at MSSU. The group’s mission is to assist viable businesses with government contracting opportunities. Currently, 92 PTACs, with over 250 local offices, form a nationwide network of dedicated procurement professionals working to support and provide the best goods and services to America’s Armed Forces and other government agencies. In 2004 the MSSU/PTAC Center was awarded the “Outstanding Center Award” from among the 92 PTACs across the United States.

Since 1995, Heartland PTAC has assisted small businesses in Southwest Missouri and the State of Kansas win 1,296 government contracts worth $283,368,515. This equals 6,667 jobs (retention and creation) using the Department of Defense Logistic Agency statistics.

Summer Pops Concerts July 27, July 30

The Choral Society of Missouri Southern State University will present two summer pops concerts this month. The Department of Music and Division of Lifelong Learning sponsor the concerts.

The first concert will be at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 27 in Edward S. Phinney Recital Hall on the Missouri Southern campus. The second concert will take place at 3 p.m., Sunday, July 30 at the First Community Church, 15th and Murphy Boulevard in Joplin.

The concerts, directed by Al Carnine, Music, are free and open to the public. Fall Choral Society rehearsals begin Monday, August 21 from 7-9 p.m. in Room 208 of the MSSU music building. The cost is $30.

No auditions will be held but it is hoped that participants will have choir experience. An ability to read music is desirable, but not mandatory. To register, contact the Department of Lifelong Learning at (417) 625-9384.

Corn named to Illinois Coaches Hall of Fame

Robert Corn, men’s head basketball coach and associate athletic director, has been named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame as a player. Corn was a member of the outstanding prep program headed by Coach Rich Herrin at Benton, Ill.

Corn received a scholarship from Memphis State and played his freshman and sophomore years there before transferring to Missouri Southern. Memphis State played in the National Invitation Tournament the two years Corn was there. He was a member of Missouri Southern’s team that advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City his senior year (1978).

The Lions finished 27-9 that year, losing to Quincy College 73-66 in the quarterfinals. Corn was an assistant coach at Universityof Alabama-Birmingham under Gene Bartow before returning to Missouri Southern to take over the head coaching duties in 1989.

"This was one of the best honors I’ve received as an athlete," Corn said. "It’s very humbling to be included among the great players who have been inducted. The awards program recognized past inductees who were in attendance and presented plaques to all of this year’s inductees."

Professor Emeritus Grace Mitchell dies

Grace Mitchell, Joplin, Professor Emeritus in the English Department at Missouri Southern State University, has died.

Mrs. Mitchell's long career in education, which goes back to the 1940s at Joplin Junior College, was marked with many achievements.

Fry succumbs to illness

Jo Ann Fry, Seneca, retired Custodial Day Supervisor at Missouri Southern, passed away on Tuesday, July 18 after a long illness. Jo Ann was honored as a Superior Service Award winner in 1999.

Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Mason Woodward Mortuary. A graveside service will be held Friday morning at Hornet Cemetery in Hornet, Mo. To reach the cemetery, travel south on Highway 43 from the Petro station for approximately 5 miles. The road to Hornet leads to the church and cemetery.

The Physical Plant is taking up a collection to plant a memorial tree on campus for Jo Ann. Those wanting to give should contact the department's office.

"Please join with me in your prayers for her family," Bob Harrington, Physical Plant, says. "She will be truly missed."

Newsmakers to look at Joplin Airport changes

An upcoming edition of the KGCS Television program Newsmakers will explore changes in air service coming to the Joplin Regional Airport on August 1. That’s the date when Mesa Airlines will begin providing service to Kansas City, at a rate of $98 round trip.

Judy Stiles, KGCS General Manager will talk to Airport Manager Steve Stockam about how the new service will serve customers. Joplin is working on developing service to Dallas early in the fall, with a goal of increasing passenger counts from Joplin. The airport is currently working to promote the new service and coordinate with local businesses.

The program will air at 5:30 p.m,. Monday, Aug. 7 and Wednesday, Aug. 9 on KGCS. It will be shown again at 5:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 12 on KOAM.

Cadets of Bergen County pay visit to MSSU

Rusty Raymond, Director of Bands, says MSSU was host to the 2005 Drum Corps International World Champion The Cadets of Bergen County on Tuesday this week.

Rusty stated, "this is the closest thing to a professional marching band. It is visual and musical production that is state of the art."

He says the Cadets, a program of Youth Education in The Arts, are one of the oldest and most honored continuously operating drum and bugle corps in the world with performing members from all over the country and world. The corps will travel over 20,000 miles this summer entertaining hundreds of thousands of fans throughout the nation.

Newsmakers to explore two decades of history

A special two-part Newsmakers program airing in July will take a look back at twenty years of local history, highlighted through guests featured on the programs. The programs tie into the 20th anniversary for Judy Stiles, Newsmakers host and producer. Stiles began hosting Newsmakers in 1986.

The first part of the program will air Sat. July 22 on KOAM, and at 12:30 p.m., Sun. July 23 on KOZJ.

The second part of the program airs at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 24 and Wednesday, July 26 on KGCS. It will be shown again at 5:30 a.m., Sat. July 29 on KOAM, and at 12:30 p.m., Sun. July 30 on KOZJ.
