Villa Española underway for eleventh year

For the eleventh year Missouri Southern State University is offering Villa Española, a Spanish Language Village, for children ages 8 through 13. The session began on Sunday, July 9 and runs through Friday, July 14.

"The camp is full," comments Tatiana Karmanova, Director of MSSU’s International Language Resource Center. "The young people are mostly local but they come from all four states."

Villagers learn basic Spanish language skills, culture, geography, history, songs, dances and crafts in a very dynamic environment.

“Students are learning about the nations of Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, and Puerto Rico this year,” Karmanova says. “We also have an advanced level for campers who have previous knowledge of Spanish," she adds.

Campers are taking part in small and large group games, computer activities and recreational events such as swimming, soccer and others. They can earn "euros" by speaking Spanish and use them to buy authentic items in the Village store.

Children are taking part in either a day camp or residential camp.

For more information visit the website at www.mssu.edu/international/ilrc/spanish.htm or call (417) 625-3140, fax at (417) 625-9585 or e-mail karmanova-t@mssu.edu.

Newsmakers to explore two decades of history

Judy Stiles

A special two-part Newsmakers program airing in July will take a look back at twenty years of local history, highlighted through guests featured on the programs. The programs tie into the 20th anniversary for Judy Stiles, Newsmakers host and producer.

“Putting together these programs was an interesting look at our past,” says Stiles. “The topics covered show how Joplin and Missouri Southern have grown over the years. However, they also show how some concerns remain the same, despite the time period.”

Stiles began hosting Newsmakers in 1986, and the first programs focused on city issues such as renovating Union Depot in downtown Joplin, and Missouri Southern goals for the future. Segments highlighted during the special programs feature interviews with elected officials such as Congressman Gene Taylor and State Senator Richard Webster. The program also highlights Joplin issues over the years, such as the battle over a proposed waterpark in Schifferdecker Park, the relocation of City Hall to the Newman Building and development of a comprehensive plan for the city.

The first program will air the week of July 17 (at 5:30 p.m., Mon. & Wed. on KGCS, at 5:30 a.m., Sat. July 22 on KOAM, and at 12:30 p.m., Sun. July 23 on KOZJ).

The second program airs the week of July 24 (at 5:30 p.m., Mon. & Wed. on KGCS, at 5:30 a.m., Sat. July 29 on KOAM, and at 12:30 p.m., Sun. July 30 on KOZJ.

Newsmakers is produced by KGCS-TV, a service of the MSSU Communication Department.
