Alumni projects benefit Mansion restoration

Alumni and friends of Missouri Southern State University are being invited to take part in the restoration of the Mission Hills Mansion on the MSSU campus.

The Spanish-motif Mansion, built in the 1920s, is the oldest building on the Missouri Southern campus. Originally the home of a Joplin mining executive, the structure included a number of novel features including a 62-foot-long tunnel and ornate gold leaf gates purchased from the William Randolph Hearst estate. Later it provided a home for classrooms and offices at Missouri Southern.

Lee Elliff Pound, Alumi Director, says a planned Alumni Courtyard will serve as the location for receptions, pre-game tailgate parties and other outdoor events for alumni, faculty, staff and friends.

The Missouri Southern Alumni Association is offering $100 or $500 engraved bricks or $1,000 engraved plaques to become part of the planned Alumni Courtyard of the restored Mansion. Several options are available for those wanting to assist with the renovation project:

  • For a $100 tax-deductible contribution, up to three lines of up to 15 characters per line can be included on a premium quality 4” x 8” brick. Each engraved character will be filled with black epoxy for legibility.
  • For a $500 tax-deductible contribution, up to six lines of 15 characters per line or a company logo can be included on an 8” x 8” brick.
  • For a $1,000 (payable over five years) tax-deductible contribution names can be marked on a weather-resistant bronze plaque to be permanently mounted on the Alumni Courtyard.

“It’s a great way to remember a loved one, acknowledge a student organization or honor a family legacy,” Pound says. “We hope that our alumni and friends will take this opportunity to leave their mark at Missouri Southern in a very important way."

All contributions are tax-deductible. Pound says anyone who assists the effort in this way will be invited to a special open house upon the completion of the Mission Hills Mansion. Those wanting to purchase a plaque or bricks should respond no later than Oct. 1, 2006.

For more information, contact the Missouri Southern State University Alumni Association at (417) 625-9355 or e-mail alumniassoc@mssu.edu.

Rape Aggression Defense training sessions scheduled.

Statistics compiled by Ms. Magazine show one out of every four college women polled have been sexually assaulted. Somewhere in America, a woman is sexually assaulted every two minutes, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Rape Aggression Defense (R..A.D.) System is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. A comprehensive course for women, R.A.D. begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.

Courses are taught by a certified R.A.D. instructor. Participants are provided with a workbook/reference manual. The growing, widespread acceptance of this system, taught at many colleges and universities, results from the ease, simplicity and effectiveness of tactics, solid research, legal defensibility, and unique teaching methods.

The Rape Aggression Defense System is dedicated to teaching women defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assault, by utilizing easy, effective and proven self-defense/martial arts tactics. This system of realistic defense will provide a woman with the knowledge to make an educated decision about resistance. Safety and survival in today's world requires a definite course of action.

The Program consists of 12 hours of training, which is broken down into four 3-hour blocks. Participants will receive education and physical hands-on training. Classes will meet at 6:30 - 9:30 p.m., June 15, June 20, July 13 and July 20 (all Thursday evenings).

All classes will be held in the Room 146 (gymnasium) of the Criminal Justice Building on the MSSU campus. Classes are free (totally underwritten by MSSU) For more information or to register for R.A.D. classes, e-mail Ken Kennedy, Public Safety, at kennedy-k@mssu.edu.

LioNet Update

MSSU will go live with LioNet for Finance on July 1.

Sandi Gieson, LioNet Project Manager, says all faculty and staff are required to attend LioNet 100 - Basic Navigation as a prerequisite for any other class.

If you perform general finance functions (general ledger, budget, creating requisitions, approving requisitions, etc) in the system you must attend training before you will be given your LioNet log-on.

Finance training is divided into several classes. Your job duties may determine which classes you will need to take. You may need only FI 101 if you approve but do not request requisitions. The training for approving requisitions will be announced later. You must have completed the prerequisites of LioNet 100 and FI 101 before you can attend approval training.

"There will not be another opportunity for training until later in the summer," Sandi says, "So please sign up for one of the sessions now."
