LaBarge receives recommendations from Missouri Southern team

LaBarge executives & students with Dr. Duggal

J.S. Duggal, Industrial Engineering Technology , says that a team of students supervised by him have submitted a formal report to the LaBarge corporation in Joplin.

Students Chad Degraffenreid, Garret Moser, Robert Skinner, Adam Thomas and David Webb formally delivered "Methods and Work Design for LaBarge Mid/Aft Section Wiring Harness" to the company on May 15.

The report was formally received by Terry Geisz, Dr. Jim Brady, Dave Norman, and Bill Stockton of LaBarge. Inc. The report partially fulfilled requirements of IET 355 Work Measurements and Ergonomics. Many of these recommendations would be incorporated into the assembly operation of these harnesses.

LaBarge primarily fills defense-related contracts for the U.S. government.

Carlson to Perform Saturday, May 27

Paul Carlson, adjunct faculty member at Suzuki Violin Academy, will perform a recital at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 27. The recital will be in Phinney Recital Hall (Room 222 of the Music Department). The performance is free and open to the public.

Paul Carlson wrote of the recital "Having enjoyed teaching in the MSSU Suzuki Violin Academy as well as playing in the Missouri Southern Orchestra, I am delighted to take this opportunity to play a recital which will feature the pre-1800 violin (the baroque violin) and the violin of today."

"Before about 1800," he explains, "the string family of instruments: violin, viola, cello, and bass generally had shorter necks and string lengths, thinner bridges, and no metal winding on the strings. The pitch was lower than today. Together with these characteristics the bows were lighter, thus creating a sound that was softer, thinner, and perhaps more ‘transparent’ than the instruments of today.

Carlson will play some compositions by J.S. Bach, Eugene Ysaye, and Bela Bartok for solo violin. The program will last approximately one hour. Immediately following the recital, string players will be invited to play the baroque violin and thus experience first hand the sound and feel of the violin that Bach, Handel, and Corelli heard and played.

Fine Arts Radio International producers' contest winner announced

Robert McBride

A program in the series “Played in Oregon,” produced by Robert McBride of All Classical KBPS/Portland, has won the Fine Arts Radio International producers’ contest for classical radio productions of 2005.

The submission, an hour with composer David Schiff on the occasion of his 60th birthday, was considered by the judges to be an exceptional educational experience. Mr. McBride’s entry is part of a weekly one-hour program celebrating the classical music scene in Oregon. The focus is usually on concerts recorded somewhere in the state by locally-based ensembles or soloists or by musicians visiting from around the world. McBride will receive a trophy.

KBPS-FM, the all-classical station in Portland (Oregon), once owned by the Portland Public Schools, is now licensed to a community organization, KBPS Radio Foundation.

The Fine Arts Radio International Awards were begun by The Klassix Society/Friends of 88.7KXMS in 2000 when it was decided Karl Haas should be recognized for his formidable achievements in the realm of classical music radio. Since then, the Lifetime Achievement Award has been supplemented with this radio producers’ contest and the more recent Karl Haas Prize for Music Education. Notable FARIA honorees include Peter Schickele, Martin Bookspan, Leonard Slatkin, Bill McGlaughlin, and the “Classical Kids” CD series.

88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International celebrated 20 years of service to the Four States this past April. Details of the various awards can be found on its home page at www.kxms.org. The award-winning "Played in Oregon" will air at 5 p.m.tonight on 88.7KXMS.

Stiles marks 20th anniversary on Newsmakers

Judy Stiles

The month of May marks the twentieth anniversary for Judy Stiles to produce and host the weekly news interview program Newsmakers, shown locally on KGCS-TV and other television stations. Stiles began producing the program in May of 1986. Over the past 20 years, she has produced more than 1000 programs, interviewing more than 1100 different people.

The first Newsmakers program produced by Stiles aired on May 7, 1986. It featured a follow-up to a Joplin City Council meeting where topics of discussion ranged from rezoning for group homes to funding for renovation work on the Union Depot. The first in-studio program produced featured an interview with Chuck Surface, who was serving as a local state representative at the time.

“When looking over the list of topics and guests from the past 20 years, you can really get a glimpse of area history,” Judy says. “I’ve been fortunate to interview many community leaders and visiting dignitaries, as well as representatives from local organizations contributing to our community. Their interviews are a slice of Joplin and Missouri Southern history. I’ve learned so much myself over the years, through these interview programs.”

A longer story on Judy's relationship with the program and Missouri Southern is available at www.mssu.edu/news/newsmakers_20years.htm
