Faculty members J. Chris Moos and Brian Nichols, Business, received "Outstanding Teacher" awards, announced during 48th commencement ceremonies at Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on Saturday, May 12. Students and colleagues nominating the teachers praised them for their commitment to students and to Missouri Southern. Moos, Instructor of Finance and Economics & International Business, joined the MSSU faculty in 2003. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Wichita State University. He served as President/CEO of King Press Corporation from 1999-2002 and has also held key positions at Display Technologies Electrohome, Inc., Ingersoll-Rand Waterjet Division and CPRFK/Center Industries Corporation. One student who nominated Moos wrote: “He puts in major effort to support the international student travel programs. One example was when he brought a short-term group to China last year. When things needed adjustments for the program he was actively involved with making sure they were made. He did not ignore them.” Another student wrote, “I have had the privilege of taking two classes with him. His demeanor in a classroom environment is superb on campus as well as on line. I see Mr. Moos as a great asset to MSSU and its student population for many years to come.” Nichols, Assistant Professor of Finance & Economics and International Business, joined the Missouri Southern faculty in 2004. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Missouri Southern State University where he was Outstanding Graduate, Outstanding Honors Graduate and Outstanding Graduate in Economics and Finance in 1993. He received his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and is involved in Doctoral study at the University of Arkansas. Those making nominations referred to him as an instructor who “has the ability to inspire both loyalty and thought in students.” The student declared: “Professor Nichols doesn’t just ‘talk the talk,” he ‘walks the walk.’ He expects excellence, so he demonstrates excellence. If he says that he will help you understand a concept, he takes the time to do so, regardless of how busy he may be at the time.” Another student nomination stated: “Professor Nichols is a great teacher. He has intensive knowledge of his teaching subjects as well as the ability to communicate that knowledge to his students”. Blunt signs historic higher education bill Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt, local legislators, Missouri Southern State University President, Dr. Julio Leon and other dignitaries participated in the signing of a historic education bill on May 25 in front of an audience of more than 200 at Missouri Southern State University. Gov. Blunt commented that the audience was the largest he had seen during his tour of other universities for the official signing of the legislation - Senate Bill 389. Dr. Leon pointed out that Missouri Southern students will benefit greatly by the increased grants that will result. "Currently MSSU students qualify for about $180,000 in grants from the state, but the new Access Missouri program will mean nearly 900 students will qualify for about $1.8 million in grants." Many have called the legislation, sponsored by Sen. Gary Nodler (R-32), the most significant higher education legislation in Missouri in years. Honor for Missouri Southern archivist
