Norahua Mexican Folkloric Dancers to perform
Admission is free and the public is invited to this appearance, the grand finale of the Mexico Semester at MSSU. The Norahua Mexican Folkloric Dancers of Oklahoma combine color and the festive spirit of Old Mexico in a series of folk dances to folkloric music. The music comes from a total of 14 different Mexican states, including Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Tabasco, Veracruz, Yucatan and Baja California. Complementing their performances are authentic, colorful costumes. "This exciting troupe will bring a glimpse into the wonderful culture of Mexico, says Chad Stebbins, International Studies.” Don't forget to sign up for a chance to win one of two TV-DVD combos. "This concert is chock full of straight-ahead driving swing" Phil states. “These include some classics that have become standards in the world of jazz.” Selections include: Big Bad Band from the Clark Terry library, Witchcraft and Vine Street Rumble from the Count Basie Band, and Louis Shuffle from the Louis Bellson Explosion Big Band. It Don't Mean A Thing (If it Ain't Got That Swing) and Honeysuckle Rose will feature jazz vocalist Shannon Martinous. Saxophonist Kyle Babbitt will serve as featured soloist on Jerome Kern's Yesterdays and guitarist Robert Terry will be featured on the famed jazz waltz Bluesette. Final Mexican Film Series presentation slated The film Sex, Shame and Tears (Sexo, Pudor y Lágrimas) will be shown at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16 in Cornell Auditorium in Matthews Hall on the campus of Missouri Southern State University. The film is free and open to the public. Missouri Constitution test slated for early next monthPat Martin, Dean's Office, School of Arts & Science, says the Missouri Constitution Test will be from 12:20 p.m. to 1 p.m. in early December. (The actual date will be provided to the student when they sign up for the examination.) Those students taking on-campus classes should report in person to room 318 of Hearnes Hall to register for the test and pick up study materials. Office hours are 8 a.m.-12 noon and 1 p.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please Note: The secretary will be out of the office Nov. 7-11. Students may sign up the remainder of this week or when she returns the week of Nov. 14. Please do not leave telephone messages or e-mails as there are no staff available to respond. Students enrolled in only internet or other distance learning classes may register by calling (417) 625-9385 or sending an email to martin-p@mssu.edu (anytime but the week of Nov. 7). Arrangements can be made for true distance learning students to take the Missouri Constitution Test with supervision by an approved proctor. The review session is now presented through Blackboard. The $5 fee for taking this test that must be paid to the Business Office in room 210 of Hearnes Hall prior to taking the test. The student then presents their receipt for admission to the testing room. All out-of-state students who plan to graduate in December, May or July of 2006 who have not taken a U.S. Government class in a Missouri college or university (not high school) need to take this test. "There are generally no make-up tests available, Pat says. "Therefore, it is extremely important that transfer students are informed by their advisors." The stars and moon theme was chosen for the previously-dilapidated room. A wall painting with a comical moon and children's poem was completed by Natalie Wiseman. The group purchased new blinds, had valences hand sewn, hand tied custom polar fleece solar system blankets, hand made new planet lamps, added glowing compounds to the planets painted on the dark ceiling, and painted the room's two-tone interior, including but not limited to surface repairs. This is part of the group's ongoing effort to move into the community and assist non-profit organizations that help children in any way. Debaters compete at CMSUMissouri Southern State University's Speech and Debate Squad competed in the CMSU Mule speech and debate tournament Nov. 4-6 in Warrensburg. A total of 29 tournament debaters from 21 colleges and universities representing seven states took part. Hart received an individual speaker award finishing 7th. Reed was in 9th place. MOSO finished third in debate sweepstakes for the weekend. Kelly B. Larson, Forensics, says the team is now off until Nov. 12 when they travel to Washburn University to participate in speech and debate tournament hoisted by the Ichabods. Rejuvenate Joplin effort a week from SaturdayOn Saturday, Nov. 19, the City of Joplin and The Joplin Globe will be sponsoring Rejuvenate Joplin. This project is designed to have teams from different organizations and businesses in Joplin compete with each other in picking up trash and cleaning up a section of road in Joplin. The event will start off at 9 a.m. at Memorial Hall and then the teams will go to there assigned neighborhoods and pick up trash. Each team will have an artist assigned to them that will select "art" from the trash. All the teams will meet back at Memorial Hall at 11:30 a.m. for a City-sponsored cookout.. The teams will complete with each other to see who can pick up the most trash in the allotted time. The City of Joplin invites teams to organize and sign up to participate in this event. Teams should consist of 8 to 10 members. Each organization may enter one or multiple teams. Team members do not have to be Joplin residents. Study Abroad Fair next WednesdayMissouri Southern will hold its annual Study Abroad Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16 on the third floor of the Billingsly Student Center. MSSU has 20 study abroad trips planned for 2006. The destinations include France, Germany, Sweden, England, Russia, Italy, Greece, Mexico, Costa Rica, China, and Japan. Faculty leaders from all of the trips will be on hand at the Study Abroad Fair answering questions and providing applications. Students with full-time status and at least a 2.5 GPA can receive up to $1,500 grants toward the cost of the trips, which all result in academic credit. Firearms safety training course November 19Missouri Southern’s Law Enforcement Academy has scheduled the next firearms safety training courses to satisfy the training requirement for the “Conceal and Carry” statute in Missouri. The eight-hour class will begin at 8 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 19 in Room 125 of the Mills Anderson Criminal Justice Center at MSSU. This training course has been approved for Barton, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald and Newton County residents. Participants will receive training in the areas of legal requirements of use of force, care and cleaning of firearms, handgun safety, and legal aspects of firearms. The Missouri Southern State University Law Enforcement Academy will utilize the state-of-the-art “live fire” range and two state-of-the-art “computerized” electronic firing ranges. The course includes live-fire and simulated fire exercises. Participants must pass a live-fire qualification exercise. The cost of the course is $95. Participants are required to bring their firearm, eye protection, ear protection and fifty (50) rounds of ammunition. Participants who do not supply their own firearm and ammunition must pay an additional $25 charge. The fee for the course must be prepaid. In order to obtain a “Concealed-Carry” permit Missourians must successfully complete an approved firearms safety course, be at least 23 years of age, be a U.S. citizen and either have lived in the state for six months or be stationed here as a member of the military, undergo state and federal criminal background checks and pay $100 for a three-year permit. Law Enforcement Academy enrollment continuesEnrollment continues for the next session of Missouri Southern's 600-Hour State Certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy according to Wayne Thomason, Academy Coordinator. Thomason says new students are encouraged to enroll by Dec. 16. Upon successful completion of the Academy, the Missouri Department of Public Safety will certify eligible students as Peace Officers in the state of Missouri. The Academy meets Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. beginning Jan. 16. Those taking part receive training in Missouri criminal statutes, constitutional law, criminal investigation, patrol techniques, defense tactics training, physical training, firearms training and other skills and abilities deemed necessary by the state for Missouri law enforcement officers. Iranian film tonight in Cornell AuditoriumThe fifth feature film for the Fall 2005season, Donya - دنیا (Iran, 2003), will be shown at 7 p.m., tonight, Friday, Nov. 11. The film will be shown in DVD format, in the comfort of Cornell Auditorium in Mathews Hall. The showing is free and open to the public. Facets called this Iranian box office smash “breezy." The film follows Donya, who returns from America in search of a place to live in Tehran and encounters in her realtor an older man, Haji, who falls head-over-heels for her. Charles Nodler, Archivist, attended the Public History Alliance of Missouri Meeting in Columbia, Mo. on Nov. 2. He also attended the Society of American Archivists Copyright Workshop in Columbia, Mo. on Nov. 3-4. An essay by Art Saltzman, English, has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Entitled "Which Reminds Me," the essay appears in the current (Fall 2005) issue of River City. MSSU hosted approximately 300 high school students on Nov. 4. Don Schultz, CAM, says the students where on campus for a Skills USA Leadership Conference. During their visit, they toured Ummel Technology Building and viewed various demonstrations including Instron tensile strength, coordinate measuring machine, laser scanning, and finite element analysis introduction.
