McDowell to speak twice next Tuesday

John McDowell, professor of folklore and ethnomusicology at Indiana University, will make two presentations at Missouri Southern State University on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

• His first presentation, titled “Songs of Passion and Strife,” will begin at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 8 in Webster Hall Auditorium at Missouri Southern State University.

• His second presentation, titled “Poetry and Violence in the Ballads of Mexico's Costa Chica,” will be held at 1 p.m. in Cornell Auditorium in Matthews Hall at Missouri Southern.

The Costa Chica is a 200-mile long coastal region beginning just southeast of Acapulco and ending near the town of Puerto Angel, Oaxaca. One of the poorest regions in Mexico, the area has a significant population of African-Mexicans and indigenous ethnic groups.

The presentations are free and open to the public as part of MSSU’s “Mexico Semester”activities.

Dr. John McDowell will introduce the remarkable song repertoire of Mexico’s Costa Chica featuring a living ballad tradition that tells the history of the region from a grassroots perspective in this concert/lecture. Dr. John McDowell has been on the trail of the corrido, Mexico’s popular ballad form, for more than a quarter of a century. His book Poetry and Violence: The Ballad Tradition of Mexico’s Costa Chica, was published by the University of Illinois Press in 2000.

Norahua Mexican Folkloric Dancers to perform

The Norahua Mexican Folkloric Dancers of Oklahoma will perform at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11 in Taylor Performing Arts Center at Missouri Southern State University.

Admission is free and the public is invited to this appearance, the final public performance of the Mexico Semester at MSSU.

The Norahua Mexican Folkloric Dancers of Oklahoma combine color and the festive spirit of Old Mexico in a series of folk dances to folkloric music from 14 different Mexican states, including Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Tabasco, Veracruz, Yucatan and Baja California.

Complementing their performances are authentic, colorful costumes. This exciting troupe will bring a glimpse into the wonderful culture of Mexico.

Rehearsals for Handel's Messiah begin Sunday

The halls of Taylor Performing Arts Center once again will be filled with the sounds of Handel’s most beloved oratorio, Messiah.. Thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous music lover and friend of Missouri Southern, this exciting production will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec, 13 in Taylor Auditorium on the MSSU campus.

A chorus of over 200 voices is expected to turn out to the first rehearsal scheduled for 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, in Room 208 of the music building on the Southern campus.

Messiah director, Bud Clark, Head of the Music Department and Director of Choral Studies at Southern, is excited about the project and expects it to be the biggest and best performance yet:

“We will have an outstanding orchestra of around 45 performers from the Joplin and surrounding area accompanying a Joplin community chorus that will include the Missouri Southern Concert Chorale,” Bud says.

“It is a powerful, moving work, that is as delightful to perform as it is to listen to,” he adds. “I have had many community singers tell me that unless we sing Handel’s Messiah, the Christmas season isn’t complete for them.”

Soloists this year will include professional artists from Oklahoma.

“If you would like to be in the chorus, just come to the first rehearsal on Sunday, Nov. 6 and prepare yourself for an unforgettable musical experience,” Bud adds. Call ext. 9562 for further information.
