Benefit concert to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina relief

A former New Orleans area resident who is now a member of the faculty of the Missouri Southern State University Music Department and other members of the department will hold a benefit concert to raise funds for the Hurricane Relief effort. The concert is scheduled for 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 25 in Webster Hall Auditorium.

Admission is free but donations will be taken at the door for the relief effort. The concert will feature selections by several teachers and student groups.

The effort is being directed by Cheryl Cifelli, Assistant Director of Bands and Director of Woodwinds. Dr. Cifelli recently moved to the Joplin region from just south of New Orleans where she was teaching at Nichols State University.

“Music is such a large part of the culture in both New Orleans and Mississippi that a musical event to help with the relief effort just seemed natural,” Cifelli says. “So many of the area music teachers have lost not only their houses and their jobs but in some cases, because of the loss of their instruments and music, they have lost the ability to become employed," she adds.

Cifelli says a friend in the Pass Christian, Miss. area told her that any structures left standing, as of Saturday, had been bulldozed down and placed in a bonfire. This included musical instruments and music. “They literally have nothing,” she adds. "My friend David Chavers says Katrina hit three days before payday which means that none of the teachers got paid and do not know when they will get paid. They just need a lot of help down there.”

Some of the individuals participating in this performance will be: Cheryl Cifelli, Susan Smith, Jeffrey Macomber, Cynthia Hukill, Jeremy Kushner, and Joel Thomas along with the Chamber Choir, Jazz Combo, Percussion Ensemble and Suzuki violin students, in addition to other students. For more information contact Cheryl Cifelli at ext. 9660.
