Deffenbaugh elected Board of Governors President

Elizabeth Deffenbaugh, Carthage, assumed the Presidency of the Board of Governors at Missouri Southern State University when the Board reorganized during its meeting Thursday, June 16. Deffenbaugh was appointed to the Board in 2001. She succeeds Dwight Douglas, Joplin, an attorney in the Neosho law firm of Douglas & Douglas. Mr. Douglas will continue serving on the Board pending action on a new appointment by Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt.

Elizabeth Deffenbaugh is a homemaker and former teacher. She has been a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and the Carthage R-9 schools. In the 1970s, she taught business education at a high school in Raytown. She is a graduate of Lincoln University in Jefferson City. She and her husband, Larry Deffenbaugh, an osteopathic physician, have four children.

Board approves budget, gives O.K. to pay increase, promotions, tenure

The Missouri Southern State University Board of Governors acted on budget recommendations for the next academic year at the group’s meeting Thursday, June 16..

The Board approved a budget of just over $50 million for fiscal year 2006. The Board approved salary increases for faculty and staff of 3 percent.

Summer picnic next week on campus

Come celebrate summer at the annual MSSU summer picnic. Julie Blackford, Student Services, says the picnic will be held from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29 on The Oval.

In case of rain, the picnic will be held inside the Billingsly Student Center. The meal is free to all MSSU students, faculty and staff. Guests from off campus can eat for only $5.

Julie says the menu will include spicy chicken, hamburgers, chips, pasta salad, cookies and cold drinks. The summer picnic is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.

Opening reception Monday for Fowler exhibit

A Spiva Art Gallery of MSSU exhbit by Judith Fowler will begin with an opening reception from 5-8 p.m., Monday, June 27 in gallery.

Val Christensen, Art, says Fowler, who is well known regionally, will exhibit large mural size paintings which she recently completely as part of a research grant. She is currently an art faculty member at Southwest Missouri Sate University. The entire campus community is invited to drop by to meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments.

The exhibit of her work will continue through July 28. The gallery hours for the summer are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

M*A*S*H day camp planned for early July

Missouri Southern State University and the Southwest Missouri Area Health Education Center will present a M*A*S*H (Missouri AHEC Science & Health) day camp. Pat Lipira, Athletics, says the purpose of the camp is to provide hands-on educational experience to students who have an interest in health careers or a particular interest in science.

The camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 5, 6, 7 at MSSU. It is designed for 7th and 8th grade students recommended by a teacher or counselor. Pat says the camp has full enrollment for the upcoming session.

She says the effort also increases awareness of opportunities in the health care field, promotes the importance of community involvement, and provides a link between classroom learning and the work environment.


Cardinal ticket contests underway

Judy Stiles, KGCS general manager, says contests giving away St. Louis Cardinals baseball tickets are currently underway on the station. In addition to the e-mail contest that faculty/staff should have received, chances to win also are included on the on-air telecasts on weekends. MSSU employees (except for TV) are also welcome to enter that contest. The contest spots run during baseball telecasts. This weekend's games start at 6 p.m., Saturday June 25 at at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 26.

Summer Institute to offer Microsoft Office assistance

Need help mastering usage of Microsoft Office applications? The Summer Institute offering is designed to do just that in four days.

A hands-on class will be held from 1:30-3:30, Monday, June 27 in Library Room 418. If you feel more comfortable using your own desktop computer, at your own computer using CENTRA collaboration software. The class will cover Microsoft Office Applications including Word, Excel, Power Point; and File Maintenance:

Class members will start with the basics of using these applications and advance to adding special enhancements and learn ways to exploit their capabilities and save time through use in conjunction with Blackboard. A certificate of completion will be issued to anyone attending and satisfactorily completing the entire 4 day series.

FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

Barbara Box, Nursing, Mark Comstock, Accounting, Steve Earney, Information Services, John Knapp, Physical Sciences, John Messick, Dean of Arts & Sciences, Bill Trudeau, International English Program, and Betty Willems, International Studies, all completed the Lifelong Learning CENTRA training during the week of June 13.. CENTRA is a synchronous E-Conferencing Collaboration tool allowing two way voice over IP, slide presentations, whiteboards and application sharing. Successful completion of this training enables faculty to request use of this application for meetings; class discussions; or lecture presentations to their students in any of their hybrid or distance education classes.
