A total of 35 employees will be recognized for their years of service to the University at the annual Employee Awards luncheon, slated for Tuesday, Dec. 23. Connie Shelton, Human Resources says three employees will commemorate 25 years with MSSU, two with 20 years, six with 15 years, eleven with 10 years, and thirteen with 5 years. In addition, "Superior Service Awards" will be presented to three employees recognizing exceptional service and outstanding contributions. One employee each from the Physical Plant, Professional, and Secretarial/Office/Technical areas will be selected. Missouri Southern State University Criminal Justice Department
recognized Mrs. Vivian León as an "Unsung Hero"
during ceremonies Thursday, Dec. 11. The MSSU Criminal Justice
Department presents the award to deserving individuals in the community.
"Mrs. León has been the first lady of Missouri
Southern for more than 20 years, and she has served the University in so
many capacities that it is impossible to list them all," stated Dr.
Blake Wolf, head of the Criminal Justice Department. "Most of her
contributions receive little recognition, and that is why we wish to
honor her." Dr. Wolf presented Mrs. León with letters of
congratulations from U.S. Senator Christopher S. Bond and U.S.
Representative Roy Blunt.
In addition to serving as director of the Missouri Southern
International Piano Competition (MSIPC), a premiere event featuring
pianists from around the globe, she hosts events each year welcoming new
freshmen and new faculty. Active in the local community, she is a
devoted advocate for the arts and education, and supports a variety of
activities for international students at Missouri Southern State
University. Mrs

University.Mrs. León and her husband, MSSU President Julio S. León,
were honored as the 1993 Outstanding Citizens of the Year by the Chamber
of Commerce in Joplin. In May 1995, Vivian León was honored as
one of the "Women of Distinction" by the Ozark Area Girl Scout
Council. In April of 2002, she received the Woman of Distinction
award given by Soroptimist International of Joplin.
A native of Nanking, China, Mrs. León received her early
musical training in Hong Kong. She passed with distinction all eight
levels of piano examinations offered by the Royal School of Music in
London while in high school and received many prizes and awards in
competitions during those years.
She came to the United States for her college education and
attended Oklahoma Baptist University for two years as a piano major. A
member of the Concert Chorale and Sigma Alpha Iota, Mrs. León was
active in voice as well as piano. She transferred to University of North
Texas in her junior year and earned a Bachelor of Music degree and a
Master of Music degree in piano performance from the School of
Music.While at North Texas, she was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, an
international music society for women and Pi Kappa Lambda, a music honor
organization for professional musicians.
She was named to "Whos Who in American Colleges and
Universities" in 1968 and was named outstanding graduate music
student at the University of North Texas by Pi Kappa Lambda in 1969.
Mrs. León has lived in Joplin since 1970. She has taught piano in
her private studio for many years and has been a part-time music faculty
member at Missouri Southern. She has performed extensively in the region
and has adjudicated competitions and festivals. She also earned a degree
in computer science at Missouri Southern in 1988.
In 1989, Vivian León became the Director of the Missouri
Southern International Piano Competition and has developed it into one
of the prominent piano competitions in the world. In 2002, applications
came from 32 countries. The Competition offers $30,000 in prize money
and the grand prizewinner is presented in a New York debut at Carnegie
Recital Hall. Many area patrons from Southwest Missouri travel to New
York City for the performance. The Leóns have one son, Nathan.
88.7KXMS to air Il Barbiere di Siviiglia Jan. 3 Gioachino Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" will be broadcast live from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at 12:30 p.m., Central Time over the Chevron Texaco Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network, and will be heard locally over 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International. The cast will include Ruth Ann Swenson as the strong-willed Rosina, Dwayne Croft as the mischievous town barber and jack-of-all-trades, Figaro, Juan Diego Flórez as the love-struck Count Almaviva, Italian bass-baritone Alfonso Antoniozzi in his Met broadcast debut as Rosina's elderly guardian, Dr. Bartolo, and Paata Burchuladze as the seedy music teacher Don Basilio. Bruno Campanella will conduct, and the announcer for the broadcast will be Peter Allen. "We realize that not everyone can make it to campus to see their neighbor, friend, or relative graduate, so we're glad to be able to provide this programming for the community," says Judy Stiles, KGCS General Manager. KGCS programming may be seen on UHF channel 57 and cable channel 7 in Joplin-Webb City-Carterville. The commencement ceremonies will also air through Southern Instructional Television on cable systems in surrounding communities. In addition, tapes of the ceremony will be available for purchase, at a cost of $15. Proceeds help support the student broadcast group, the National Broadcasting Society. Rho Sigma inducts new members The Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society Rho Sigma Chapter at Missouri Southern State College inducted 20 new members in the Oct. 8. Kaye Abight, Teacher Education, Chapter Counselor, Amber Tankersley, Teacher Education, Associate Counselor, and an initiation team inducted new members. Kappa Delta Phi is an International Honor Society in Education that recognizes the excellence in education and among its membership is the top 10 percent of college students in teacher education programs. Membership in Kappa Delta Pi is by initiation only, and members must meet high academic and leadership standards to be initiated. Selection is based on high academic standard, a commitment to education, and a professional attitude that assures steady growth in profession. Bill Kumbier, English, accompanied a group of students and faculty from the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri-Kansas City to the 25th International Latin American Film Festival in Havana, Cuba, Dec. 5-11. The group was led by Dr. Tamara Falicov, who visited and spoke at Missouri Southern on Cuban film earlier this semester. Art Saltzman, English, has had two essays accepted for publication: "In So Many Words" by Bayou and "The Table on the Planet" by Delmar.
