Memorandum signing today on campus Missouri Southern State University and Northwest Missouri State University officially will sign a Memorandum of Understanding to deliver cooperative Master's degree programs in the Joplin area. Missouri Southern president, Dr. Julio León, and Northwest Missouri State University president, Dr. Dean Hubbard, will be present for the signing, which will take place during the regular MSSU Board of Governors meeting at 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21 in Room 314 of Billingsly Student Center on the MSSU campus. Under the provisions of Senate Bill 55, which gave Missouri Southern university status, MSSU can enter into agreements with other Missouri state universities for the delivery of graduate education. The agreement between MSSU and Northwest calls for both institutions to cooperate in the delivery of master's degrees in Early Childhood Education, Biology, Instructional Technology, Health and Physical Education, Recreation, and Reading and details the obligations and responsibilities of each party.
Music to commemorate JFK anniversary
88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International will present an hour of music
beginning at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 22 in commemoration of the
anniversary of the death of President John F. Kennedy.
Jeff Skibbe, KXMS General Manager, says at 11 a.m.,
Saturday KXMS will begin the broadcast with the prologue music from
Oliver Stone's film JFK. The film score excerpt will be followed
by Leonard Bernstein's "Third Symphony," dedicated to the
memory of President Kennedy, as well as an English motet, "Take
Him, Earth, for Cherishing" composed by Herbert Howell.
The broadcast will conclude with "Elegy for J.F.K.,"
written in 1964 by Igor Stravinsky. Detailed listings and CD links to

Prima Quartet features two pianos, eight hands The Prima Quartet, featuring four accomplished local pianists, will present a unique concert of two pianos, eight hands on December 7 at 4 p.m. in the Billingsly Student Center at MSSU. The Prima Quartet members are Cynthia Hukill and Gloria Jardon, Music, Linda Berney, and Vivian Leon, MSIPC. They will perform music by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Scott Joplin, Georges Bizet and others. The performance and Holiday Tea is sponsored by US Bank. Reservations may be made by calling (417) 625-9755. Admission is $15 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition.Today's Brown Bag Today's Brown Bag for faculty/staff features Kelly Larson, Communication, presenting Collegiate Debate-Ins and Outs for Southern's Nationally Recognized Program. Suzuki students to perform tomorrow Missouri Southern Suzuki Violin Academy students of Jon Gayman, Kexi Liu and Elizabeth Messinger, Music, will perform recitals at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22, at Webster Auditorium on the MSSU campus. The BBU delegation will be headed by university President, Su Zhi Wu. On Dec. 1, officials from MSSU and BBU will participate in a signing ceremony of a 3-year "Intention of Cooperation" that will recognize common interests and establish a framework for faculty and undergraduate student exchanges. Dr. Julio León and Dale Simpson, English, visited Beijing Broadcasting University in 2000. Chad Stebbins and Stephanie Goad, Institute of International Studies, and Ward Bryant, Communications, participated in the BBU's International Forum on Internet Communication Development in the New Century in 2001. Workshop slated for Dec. 2 Erik Hilgendorf and Dale Voigt-Catlin, Student Support Center, will conduct a workshop on "Managing Test Anxiety and Practicing Relaxation Techniques" from noon to 2:30 p.m.at on Tuesday, Dec. 2 in the lounge area of the library coffee shop. As finals approach, this workshop is designed to address concerns for students who struggle with test anxiety, panic, blanking out, and intense fear regarding testing.Contemporary Series to feature Heaven The Contemporary Foreign Film series selection for tonight, Friday, Nov. 21, is Heaven (Germany/USA 2002; 97 min.). The film will be shown in Matthews Auditorium starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Cate Blanchett stars as a schoolteacher whose husband has died of a drug overdose. After being ignored by the law, she enacts her own revenge on the drug dealer responsible and accidentally kills innocent people. On the run, she falls in love with a sympathetic police officer.Nick Kyle, Art, says the film brings together two talents that recently have received much attention among film viewers and critics: Tom Tykwer, the director of Run Lola Run and The Princess and the Warrior and, as writer rather than director, the late Krysztof Kieslowski of the trilogy Blue, White and Red. Fall Choral Concert to air The Fall 2003 Choral Concert, A Field of Gold, presented by the Missouri Southern Music Department, will air at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30 on KGCS-TV. The concert features the MSSU Concert Chorale, Chamber Choir and Southern Exposure. "We are glad to be able to tape this presentation for airing on our station," says Judy Stiles, KGCS General Manager. "This will allow the public to see the talented musicians from campus." KGCS programming may be seen on UHF channel 57 and cable channel 7 in Joplin and Webb City. The program may also be seen on Southern's Instructional Television cable channel in outlying communities of Carthage, Lamar, Monett and Neosho.Holidays are just around the corner!

She wrote approval reports for the elementary, early childhood, and middle school programs and accompanied nine students to the 44th Kappa Delta Pi Biennial Convocation, Nov. 13-15, where she provided a presentation on "Windows' Accessibility Options." As a member of both the Bylaws and Constitution Committee and the Convocation Planning Committee, she participated in a variety of business meetings and receptions. Susan Koepke, Upward Bound, recently attended the Mid-American Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel's (MAEOPP) annual conference in Fontana, Wisconsin. MAEOPP is a 10-state, regional association for TRIO personnel. Susan also served as a moderator for several concurrent sessions.A poem by Joy Dworkin, English, titled "Remorse" has been accepted for publication in Poetry Motel. Bob McDermid and Gwen Murdock, Psychology, attended the Southwest Conference on the Teaching of Psychology on November 14-15 at Texas Lutheran University near San Antonio. Bob presented a paper entitled "Sexuality in the Psychology Curriculum."Pat Hurley and Lynsey Schwabrow, Career Services, attended the annual conference of the Kansas Association of Colleges and Employers in Overland Park, Kan., Nov. 5-7. The organizations goal is to create a forum for interaction and support among college and university career services officials and employers in all sectors. Representatives from western Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma participated in career-related workshops and toured the facilities of GARMIN International and Daimler Chrysler Services. Additional sponsoring employers for the conference included State Street, UPS, Quintiles Transnational, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and the Sprint Corporation. Alex Vernon, Business Administration, made a presentation at the Nov. 11 meeting of the Joplin-Springfield section of the American Association for Quality. The presentation entitled, "Decision Making and Quantitative Modeling" focused on using modeling techniques to solve production and quality problems. The presentation was made in Joplin, but was sent by conference call to locations in Springfield and Lebanon. Alex is longtime member of ASQ and an expert in quantitative modeling.
