Over 150 expected at Merit Badge Workshop Over
150 participants are expected at a Merit Badge Workshop for the Brownies
and Junior Girl Scouts of the Greater Ozark Area scheduled for 9 a.m. -
1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15 in Reynolds Hall. The MSSU Environmental
Health Club will conduct the workshop. This is the first time that the
Girl Scouts and MSSU have worked together to assist scouts in completing
requirements for their badges.
The Environmental Health Club is offering the Brownies four
badges: "Outdoor Adventurer," "Earth and Sky," "Water
Everywhere," and "Science in Action." Junior Girl Scouts
can receive three badges: "Science Discovery," "Rocks
Rock," and "Environmental Health."
Badges will be obtained as each scout visits displays, attends
speaker presentations, participates in nature walks and scientific
experiments, and fulfills other requirements as set forth by the Girl
Scouts of America. Environmental Health Club members will make each
display and will work at the event. MSSU professors also will assist the
club in some of the presentations. The Club has also obtained funding in
the form of donations from area businesses to assist with the costs
associated with the event. Other groups including the American Red
Cross, the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and Coleman's
Vision Improvement Center will also take part in the workshop.
This event helps us see the community resources available within
our area, while helping out the Girl Scouts, " says M. Ann Thomas
of the Environmental Health Club. "We would like to make this an
annual event during the fall and work on doing the same type of event
for the Boy Scouts the following spring," she adds.
Prima Quartet features two pianos, eight hands The
Prima Quartet, featuring four accomplished local pianists, will present
a unique concert of two pianos, eight hands on December 7 at 4 p.m. in
the Billingsly Student Center at MSSU. The Prima Quartet members are
Linda Berney, Cynthia Hukill, Gloria Jardon, and Vivian Leon, all of
Joplin.
They will perform music by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Scott
Joplin, Georges Bizet and others.
The performance and Holiday Tea is sponsored by US Bank.
Reservations may be made by calling (417) 625-9755. Admission is $15 per
person. Proceeds will benefit the Missouri Southern International Piano
Competition.
The Quartet will perform on two matched, seven-foot Steinway
grand pianos provided by Steinway Piano Gallery in Springfield. It is
not known when, or if, a concert of two pianos, eight hands has been
presented in Joplin before. The four local pianists are excited about
bringing this sound to the area for the holidays. All are trained
classical musicians and enjoy playing a wide range of styles.
The goal of the effort is to present an entertaining and
enriching performance: "We're going to have something nice for a
Sunday afternoon for everyone to enjoy," Dr. Cynthia Hukill says.
Finding music arranged for this particular makeup was a
challenge:
"Two pianos with four players wasn't a form used by most
composers," states Quartet member Linda Berney. "One of my
teachers, Elwyn Ratliff of Tulsa, used piano quartets to allow his
students to present something showy and spectacular during recitals,"
Berney says. "We're using one of his quartet scores in our program."
The quartet also found material through Internet searches and a trip to Kansas City. Gloria Jardon arranged "This Is It," sometimes known as the "Bugs Bunny Theme." She says arranging music for four musicians requires attention to detail: "In the end you have 16 lines going at once," she explains. "The musicians' fingers can't run into each other and all four people have to play the correct harmony." The quartet members have an impressive and varied background in classical music. Linda Berney, a Tulsa, Okla. native, began her music training at the age of eight. As Youth Audition winner in 1962 she performed with the Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra. She continued her studies at DePauw University for two years and completed a degree in piano performance at the University of Tulsa. Ms. Berney lived and worked abroad and pursued additional study at the Conservatoire de Musique in Geneva, Switzerland. She has maintained a home teaching studio for many years and has performed frequently in solo and ensemble recitals. Gloria Jardon received her early training at the Kansas City Conservatory and studied further at University of Kansas. She graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music. Returning to Kansas City, Jardon began teaching piano and was the winner of a Missouri State prize in composition. She has been a member of the music faculty of Missouri Southern State University - Joplin since 1981 and is the pianist with the Southern Trio. She is the concept originator and present chairperson of the Honors Audition of the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition. Cynthia Hukill joined the Music Faculty at Missouri Southern State University as Coordinator of Piano Studies in the fall of 1999 after an extensive career as a pianist, teacher, and administrator in Kansas City, Missouri. There she chaired the piano faculty at Avila University and served as coordinator of the Music Division. She holds the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance from the University of North Texas and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from the University of Missouri - Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Dr. Hukill maintains an active performance schedule as a soloist and chamber musician and serves frequently as an adjudicator and clinician in the Midwest and southern states. Vivian León received her early musical training in Hong Kong and passed with distinction all eight levels of piano examinations offered by the Royal School of Music (London), receiving many prizes and awards in competitions during those years. She earned both her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in piano performance from the University of North Texas. León has maintained a private studio and has been on the faculty of Missouri Southern State University. In 1989, she became the director of the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition and has been a devoted advocate for the arts and for music education. "We're four women who want to do something fun together with music," says pianist Vivian Leon. "We've designed a program that the whole family can enjoy together and get in the holiday spirit."Today's Brown Bag Today's Brown Bag for faculty/staff features Conrad Gubera, Social Sciences, presenting Remembering JFK, in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the President's death.
