homecoming03Jaime Green, senior Physical Education Major from Springdale, Ark., and Butch Loveall, senior Physical Education major from Carthage, were named as royalty to preside over Homecoming 2003 festivities Friday, Oct. 10 on the campus oval. The royalty were nominated by student organizations and elected by the student body. Green and Loveall represented the Kinesiology Club.

This year's homecoming theme was "Southern Stampede." Jaime Green is a member of the Kinesiology Club, the Residence Hall Association, ODK, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a former MSSU Lady Lion Basketball player. She has served as an assistant basketball coach at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School, is a staff assistant in the Residence Hall at MSSU and was the recipient of an athletic scholarship at MSSU. Her goal is to become a Head Women's Basketball Coach at the High School level while teaching Health/Physical Education.

Butch Loveall is a member of the Kinesiology Club and Missouri Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance (MOAHPERD). He plans to become a Physical Education Teacher and Coach.

The Queen and five King finalists were presented at the annual Homecoming all-campus lunch at noon, last Friday and participated in the Homecoming parade at noon, Saturday, Oct. 11 on the MSSU campus. The Queen and King were introduced during half-time activities at the Homecoming football game with Truman State University.

Mastroianni, Cardinale star in International film

Il Bell' Antonio, starring Marcello Mastroianni and Claudia Cardinale, is the 4th program in the 42nd Annual International Film Festival presented by the Missouri Southern Film Society. The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28 in Matthews Hall Auditorium on the MSSU campus.

Mastroianni plays and upper-class Sicilian, Antonio, caught between the demands made upon masculinity by a society that, on the one hand, cannot forgive sexual failure, and, on the other, prizes nothing more than virginity. Being victimized by his attractiveness, he fulfills with honor the duties of the Sicilian male in most situations but is incapable of making love to those few women who are high-born, pure and marriageable.

Financial assistance for this project has been provided in part by the MSSU Institute of International Studies. Single admissions at the door are $2 for adults and $1.50 for senior citizens or students.

Handel's Messiah returns to Missouri Southern

After three years of silence at Christmas, the halls of Taylor Auditorium will once again be filled with the sounds of Handel's most beloved oratorio, Messiah. Scheduling and financial problems have led to repeated postponements for what had become one of the area's most cherished traditions.

Thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous music lover and friend of Missouri Southern, the exciting production will be performed once again at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16 in Taylor Performing Arts Center. A chorus of over 200 voices is expected to turn out to the first rehearsal scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2 in Room 208 of the music building on campus.

Messiah director, Bud Clark, Music, is excited about the project. He says he expects it to be the biggest and best performance yet: "We will have an outstanding orchestra of around 45 performers from Joplin and the surrounding area that will accompany a community chorus consisting not only of Southern's Concert Chorale, but also the Crowder Community Chorus," Clark says. "It is such a powerful, moving work that is as delightful to perform as it is to hear," he adds. "I have had many community singers tell me that Christmas isn't complete for them unless we sing Handel's Messiah."

The soloists this year are professional artists from both Nebraska and Missouri. The featured soprano soloist is an adjunct vocal instructor at Missouri Southern, Carol Chapman, from Springfield, Mo. Other soloists are alto Leslie Jones, Cape Girardeau, bass Roberto Mancusi, Kansas City, Mo., and tenor Scott Miller, Omaha, Neb.

"If you would like to be in the chorus, just come to the first rehearsal on Nov. 2, and prepare yourself for an unforgettable musical experience," says Clark. For further information about the production or joining the chorus, call Bud Clark at (417) 625-9562

Behar to translate Cuba Oct 22-24

Ruth Behar, professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan, will begin a series of presentations at MSSU with Translating Cuba: Predicaments of a Diasporic Anthropologist at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22 in Webster Hall Auditorium.

Dr. Behar has been "translating Cuba" in a number of ways for the past decade: on a personal level, as a native of the island who left as a child and returns in search of memory and belonging; as an anthropologist, in scholarly writing and documentary filmmaking; and as an educator who translates Cuba for those who want to learn about the island and its culture. She also is scheduled to speak at four additional times:
  • 11a.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, Hearnes Hall 320, World Humanities class.
  • 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, Webster Hall 308, Survey of Spanish American Literature class.
  • 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, Webster Hall Auditorium: Adio Kerida/GoodbyeDear Love: A Film Screening and Discussion
  • 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 24, Webster Hall Auditorium: Everything I Kept: Being a Poet in Cuba (lecture and reading).
In "Adio Kerida," Dr. Behar addresses her goodbye to her native land, to the Cuba she left as a child. Her grandparents were Jewish emigrants to Cuba and hoped it would be their promised land. But after the revolution most of the Jews left Cuba and resettled in the United States; only a small number stayed on the island. Through her documentary "Adio Kerida," Dr. Behar goes in search of the exotic tribe of Sephardic Jews still in Cuba, as well as the Jewish Cubans living in the United States.
