Russian classic next in International Series Bed and Sofa, one of the landmarks of the Russian silent cinema, is the 3rd program in the current 42nd Annual International Film Festival. The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14 in Matthews Hall Auditorium. This unique and remarkable film deals with individual conflicts in love and marriage during a housing shortage in Moscow in the 1920s. That it could imply an imperfection in the socialist system alone makes it unusual and the film shows surprisingly little overt concern with politics. Director Abram Room created this moving human drama which is most noted for its inventive direction, marvelous humor and naturalism in depicting its characters. Moreover, the character of the bored housewife, played by Ludmila Semyonova, and her decision at the film's conclusion, makes this one of the few significant films of the era to deal with the liberation of women. Jay Leyda, author of Kino: A History of the Russian and Soviet Film, has written: "The film by which Room will always be remembered is a masterpiece of intimate relations, minutely observed . . . what a delicately balanced combination of comedy and drama it is built upon." Financial assistance for this project has been provided in part by the MSSU Institute of International Studies. Season tickets for the remaining six programs are on sale at $10 for adults and $7 for senior citizens or students. Single admissions at the door are $2 for adults and $1.50 for senior citizens or students.Flu Shot clinic scheduled It's the time of year for the walk in Flu Shot Clinic. At the Truman State tournament, in Lincoln-Douglas debate, the reigning LD national champion, Jeremy Hollingshead, senior from Webb City, qualified for elimination rounds. He went on to the final round and won the tournament on a 2-1 decision, defeating a competitor from the University of Nebraska. Wes Carillo, junior from Parsons, Kan., qualified for elimination rounds but was defeated in round 16. Tyler Coble, junior from Webb City, qualified for elimination but lost in the quarter final round. Newcomer, Eric Crinnian, freshman from Webb City, just missed the elimination break at his first college tournament. Hollingshead, Coble and Carillo (who placed 3rd, 6th and 7th, respectively) won individual speaker awards. Missouri Southern placed 5th in combined sweepstakes. Jason Edgar, senior from Aurora and Jeff Dugdale, senior from Joplin, competed in duo action, finishing fourth. "The MSSU speech and debate squad has started its journey for the team national championships," says Debate coach, Kelly Larson, Communications. The film stars Nick Nolte as an aging thief/conman who attempts a comeback that entails an elaborate robbery of paintings and cash from a French Riviera casino. Nolte creates an intriguing portrayal, at once sleazy and subtle, of the thief who struggles with gambling and heroin addictions, not to mention a complicated attraction to a younger Russian woman, to pull off this last, big job.
