Missouri Southern is state's
newest university

Missouri Southern is the Show-Me State's newest university.

Missouri Governor Bob Holden officially signed Senate Bill 55, which renames Missouri Southern State College as Missouri Southern State University-Joplin, Saturday, July 12 in Taylor Performing Arts Center. Southern campus.

Missouri Southern alumni, faculty/staff, students, supporters, and the public were in attendance to help inaugurate the creation of Missouri's newest university.

"This name change will enhance our visibility and credibility not just in Missouri, but throughout the world," Missouri Southern President, Dr. Julio León, says. "In many parts of the world the college designation indicates high school level. The term more accurately describes our institution. As we continue to enhance our international mission, this name change will be a valuable tool in our efforts to recruit students."

The Missouri House of Representatives gave final approval in early May to the bill sponsored by Sen. Gary Nodler, R-Joplin, and Rep. Bryan Stevenson, R-Joplin. Others working to pass the legislation included Rep. Steve Hunter, Rep. Ron Richard, Rep Kevin Wilson and Rep. Marilyn Ruestman.

In addition to changing Missouri Southern's name, the legislation eliminates the Missouri Southern Board of Regents and replaces it with a Board of Governors. The new board, which will have a statewide mission, will consist of seven voting members and one non-voting member. Five of those members will be from the institution's primary coverage area, and two from outside that area.

Founded as Joplin Junior College in 1937 by the Joplin Board of Education, the institution was originally located in downtown Joplin. In 1965 a bill signed by Governor Warren Hearnes provided for the establishment of a two-year senior college known as Missouri Southern College. In 1975 a bill signed by Governor Kit Bond called for the state to provide funds for the operation of the entire four years.

"We are very excited about this name change," Dr. León states. "It's going to be good for the college, for Joplin and for the entire Southwest Missouri region."

Villa Española offered for eighth year

Villa Española, a Spanish Language Village, is being offered for the eighth year this week at Missouri Southern. The Village offers a taste of Spanish-speaking cultures for 8-to 13-year-olds who spend a week on campus. Participants choose from residential or day camp.

The camp is filled to capacity with a record 90 participants according to Tatiana Karmanova, Director of the International Language Resource Center. Villagers will learn basic Spanish language skills, culture, geography, history, songs, dances and crafts.

"We also have an advanced level for campers who participated in previous camps," comments Dr. Karmanova. Faculty and staff include native speakers of Spanish, American Spanish teachers and students who have studied and lived in Spanish-speaking countries. Campers will take part in small and large group activities such as crafts, songs, dances, small and large group games, computer activities and recreational events such as soccer, swimming and more.
