Indian educator to speak this morning

The Institute of International Studies and the English Department, invites you to a special guest lecture this morning at 11 a.m. in Webster Hall Auditorium. The speaker will be Professor Mohan Ramanan of the Department of English at the University of Hyderabad, India.

Bill Kumbier, English, says the lecture titled, "The Indian Discovery of America," will focus on Indian reception and understanding of American literature. Ramanan's presentation should engage students and faculty from many disciplines, including history, social sciences, communications and the arts, so all are welcome and encouraged to attend.

In addition to being the author and editor of many books, Ramanan has the distinction of having served as Deputy Director of the Indo-American Centre for International Studies, one of the foremost research centers in India and the foremost for Indian scholars who want to study the United States. At a time when many Americans are becoming increasingly aware of how we are perceived abroad, Ramanan's insights should be especially illuminating.

Missouri Southern welcomes star academic team

Students invited to join Missouri Southern's prestigious Honors Program will be introduced during a formal signing ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday, May 2, in the Connor Ballroom of Billingsly Student Center. Missouri Southern will welcome its academic team with enthusiasm similar to that given star athletes who make a decision to attend a college or university.

Many high school teachers, counselors, administrators and family members watched the students make their choices official. Julio León, president, will welcome the students as they take this important step in their educational career. All the students will attend Missouri Southern this fall and several have already completed a number of college hours.

The signing ceremony continues a tradition established when the Honors Program developed in 1984. Entrance into the program is by invitation and requires a composite score of 28 or above on the ACT or a grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale. The program offers honors sections of general education courses and special honors courses in selected areas. The students invited this year were selected from a competitive pool of more than 130 applicants interviewed.

"The quality of the applicants is simply outstanding," says Pat Kluthe, Director of the Honors Program. The students, known as Evans Scholars, each receive a four-year, full tuition scholarship. Those with a 31 ACT composite or better will receive additional Evans Scholarship funds for on-campus room and board. Incoming freshmen into the Honors Program this year have an average ACT score of 29.5. Their average grade point average is 3.91.

Over 90 percent are in the top ten percent of their senior class. Four are valedictorians and two are salutatorians of their senior classes. The group also includes eight Bright Flight scholars, Missouri students who score 30 or above on their ACT and receive their college training at a Missouri school.

The students will be assisted by Missouri Southern student members of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), an international organization headquartered in Springfield. The conference will be held from 2-3:30 p.m., Monday, May 5 in Room 204 of Matthews Hall on the Missouri Southern campus.

"We expect to have a lively session," says Brad Conley, junior marketing major from Conway, Ark., president of the SIFE chapter at MSSC. "Ideas about ethics in business can vary widely and are provide a rich forum for debate."
