The Chart named "Best in State" The Chart, Missouri Southern's campus newspaper, was named "Best In State" at the Missouri College Media Association's annual convention on April 12 in Springfield. Rhonda Clark, Publications Manager of The Chart, says this year marks the fifth time the paper has received this award. Campus newspapers from 28 colleges and universities in the state of Missouri competed at this year's convention. A team of four judges selected the "Best In State" recipient from among the Best Overall Winners in the four divisions. "Solid copy and a great mix of campus and community coverage The Chart just keeps getting better," read one judge's comments. Items submitted for competition came from issues published during the spring and fall 2002 semesters under the direction of Allison Rosewicz, editor-in-chief for 2002-2003, and J.R. Ledford, who held the same position the previous year. "It's very satisfying and complimentary to know outsiders recognize how hard we work to put out a high-quality college newspaper," said Allison Rosewicz, editor-in-chief. "The diverse types and large number of awards we received are a testament to the versatility of our staff." For a complete list of Chart staff members who received individual awards, visit the news release site at www.mssu.edu/pages/news/chartawards03.htm. Bid awarded for running track construction The Board of Regents held a conference call meeting on Monday, April 21, to discuss the award of a bid for the construction of the running track at Fred G. Hughes Stadium. The Board voted unanimously to award the contract to Beynon Sports Surfaces for $371,900. Beynon Sports Surfaces has extensive experience in the construction of collegiate and international tracks. Of the six companies submitting bids, Beynon was the only vendor providing a 10-year warranty. Beynon met the specifications for a full-pour track surface, similar to ones the company installed at the University of North Carolina, the University of Tulsa, and James Madison University. The indoor track at Leggett and Platt is a Beynon product and has yielded very satisfactory results, said Dr. Julio S. León, College president. "The new football artificial surface and the track were made possible by generous contributions of corporations and individuals who believe in Missouri Southern and we are extremely grateful to them," President León said. Bids for the project ranged from the low submitted by Beynon to a high of $607,910. Both the track and football field, for which a bid for new turf was awarded at the previous Board of Regents meeting, are expected to be completed before the 2003 football season opens in September.
