MSIPC begins with appearance by Martin Jones
Gala Dinner sponsored by Alumni Association The Missouri Southern Alumni Association invites faculty, staff and community to a Gala Dinner scheduled for 6 p.m., Saturday, April 27 in the Connor Ballroom on the 3rd floor of the Billingsly Student Center. The black-tie optional dinner is $35 per person, which includes entry into the Gala Winners Concert of the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition at 8 p.m. in Taylor Performing Arts Center. For those already having tickets to the Gala Concert, the cost for the dinner is $20 per person. The dinner menu will include 3 oz. sautéed veal cutlet with marsala sauce, 3 oz. grilled chicken Dijon with white wine sauce, lemon glazed baby carrots, wild rice, winter green salad, creme de menthe cheese cake and beverage. Those planning on attending are requested to RSVP by telephoning the Missouri Southern Alumni Office at (417) 625-9355.
The Martin Jones concert on Tuesday, April 23, and the Gala Winners Concert on Saturday, April 27, will both be broadcast LIVE internationally at www.kxms.org and locally at 88.7FM. Both Tuesday and Saturday shows begin at 8 p.m. Both programs will be hosted by Jeff Skibbe, general manager of 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International, a cultural resource of MSSC.
Earth Day/Campus Appreciation Week Earth Day is Monday, April 22. On this coming Tuesday, April 23, from 11a.m.- 3 p.m., the MSSC Ecolonomics Program and the Sustainability class will be sponsoring Earth Day in the MSSC oval. John Knapp, Physical Sciences, says there will be live entertainment, booths highlighting energy-efficient products and practices, a station to recycle old batteries, foods grown using sustainable farming practices, exhibits showing highlights of the southwest Missouri environment and guest speakers. Everyone is encouraged to attend some of these activities. Earth Day takes place during Campus Appreciation Week, April 22-26, according to Ann Marlowe, English. Today's Brown Bag Make plans to attend the Technology Brown Bag today, Friday, April 19. Presenters will include Karl Schmidt, International Studies, along with students Jesse Dickerson, Chellee Vandergrift, and Ivy Hagedorn. The topic will be Project South Asia: A Digital Library of Teaching Resources at MSSC. The presentation will be from 12:10 to 12:50 in Room 310 Billingsly Student Center. Pick up your free lunch at the mini-buffet outside of BSC 310. Free lunches are a courtesy of Academic Affairs and AmeriServe Food Management Services. All faculty and staff are welcome to attend.Bookspan to Receive Achievement Award The Klassix Society, the Friends of 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International will present its 2002 Lifetime Achievement Award to Martin Bookspan at the OK Mozart International Festival Saturday, June 8 in Bartlesville, Okla. Martin Bookspan will receive the award during intermission of the all-Beethoven concert at the OK Mozart Festival. 88.7KXMS General Manager, Jeff Skibbe, will present the Fine Arts Radio International Awards trophy to Mr. Bookspan during the 8 p.m. concert. The Award recognizes Mr. Bookspan's contribution to music education in his many decades of radio presentations, most notably as long-time host of the New York Philharmonic radio series produced by WQXR-FM in New York City. Hale to Take Part in Japan Seminar Carolyn Hale, Communications, has been selected to participate in the Japan Studies Association's Stage II Faculty Development Seminar: Issues in Post-War Japan, June 9-23 at Tokai University, Hawaii. Only 18 teachers were chosen from a total 55 applicants, based on essays, letters of recommendation and resumes. An important aspect of the seminar will be breakout groups and discussions. Discussion will also take place on the impact of Japan's defeat in World War II, former Emperor Hirohito, women's place in Japanese society, women writers in Japan, film in Japan, the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings and other topics. Carolyn received a competitive post-doctoral Sasakawa Fellowship in Japanese Studies in June 2000 which allowed her to compete for the current seminar. Twenty-five initiated into Rho Sigma The Rho Sigma Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi at Missouri Southern State College initiated 25 new members in a ceremony March 6. Michael Horvath, Dean, School of Education and Nancy Smith, Assistant Dean and Chair, Department of Teacher Education spoke to the crowd of 100 people. During the evening's events, Daniel B. March, Physics, was presented with the Point of Excellence Award by John Magoffin, Recognition Officer. Kaye Abight, chapter Counselor, Amber Tankersley, Associate Counselor, and an initiation team inducted new members. The dates of the camp are July 14-19. Children ages 8-13 of MSSC employees can attend the camp for a reduced price of $300 for residential campers and $200 for day campers. New members join Missouri Iota chapter Over 90 students were initiated into the Missouri Iota Chapter of Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society, during ceremonies held Sunday, April 7 in the Billingsly Student Center's Connor Ballroom. To be eligible for the organization students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or above at the time they apply for graduation. Delivering the address for this year's induction was John Messick, Dean, School of Arts and Sciences. Life Long Learning's Robin Douglas designed the centerpiece for this year's Chamber of Commerce Banquet, held at Joplin's John Q. Hammons Convention Center on April 18. Life Long Learning gave each person at each table a coffee mug with the Missouri Southern State College and Lifelong Learning logos on them, as well as information. Each cup had a Summer and Fall Schedule book in it. Between 800 and 900 people attended this event.
