Spencer Bartlett nominations being accepted Derek Skaggs, Admissions, says the Scholarship, Aid and Award Committee is accepting nominations for the Spencer Bartlett Respect Awards. The recipients of this award are graduating senior students of the institution who have the greatest respect for God, the United States of America and their fellow man. They must have been born in the United States and have maintained average grades or better while students. Recipients will be recognized at the Honors Convocation this spring. Monetary awards go directly to the winning students. A minimum of two Respect Awards will be made annually to a graduating male and female student. In the last five years, over $20,000 has been awarded. Nominations must received in room 211 of the Billingsly Student Center no later than April 3. Brown Bags offer lunch, information One of today's two Brown Bag Lunches features David Smith, Business, speaking on the topic: Teaching Accounting Online. Dave will talk about developing his Accounting course online and the advantage of using a C.D. supplement.The presentation will be from 12 noon-12:50 in Room 310 of the Billingsly Student Center. Free lunches are a courtesy of LifeLong Learning and AmeriServe Food Management Services. All faculty/staff are invited. Also during the noon hour today, Linda Bush, Registered Dietician at Freeman Hospital will speak on the topic Healthy Eating for People on the Run! The Brown Bag will be held from 12 noon-12:50 in Room 313 of the Billingsly Student Center. Free lunches are a courtesy of the MSSC Wellness Program & AmeriServe Food Management Services. Again, all faculty/staff may attend. 2002 IFA Championship won in Rome, Italy The Southern Speech and Debate Squad competed in the 2002 International Forensics Association Tournament in Rome, Italy, March 15-22. Forty-four participants took part in the debate divisions from a total of 27 schools. In varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate, Jeremy Hollingshead, sophomore from Webb City, Tyler Coble, freshman from Webb City, and Stephanie Bullard, sophomore from Springfield, qualified for elimination rounds. Bullard and Coble were semi-finalists. Hollingshead won the final round on a 3-0 decision to become the 2002 International Forensics Association L-D champion. Southern also won last year's IFA tournament in Prague. "Back-to-back wins speak volumes about the program's competitiveness at all levels and [its] support of the college's international mission," says Kelly Larson, Communications. Regional Science Fair held this week The 13th Annual Missouri Southern Regional Science Fair was held Tuesday through Thursday, March 26-28, on the third floor of the Billingsly Student Center. More than 150 high school and middle school students from 10 regional school districts presented projects for judging the evening of Tuesday, March 26. Winners for both the Junior and Senior divisions were announced at an awards presentation at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 28. Michael Garoutte, Physical Science Department, conducted the ceremony in the Anderson Justice Center auditorium. Winners in the twelve senior division categories received a scholarship covering tuition for one semester at Missouri Southern. Two individual grand prizewinners will advance to compete with approximately 1,200 other high school students from more than 40 countries for over $2 million in awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Louisville, Kentucky May 12-18. The Intel ISEF is considered the "Olympics" or "World Cup World Series" of science fairs.
Divided We Fall to show tonight The Contemporary Foreign Film series feature tonight, Friday, March 29, is Divided We Fall (Czech Republic, 2000, 122 min.) Facets describes the film as follows: "In German-occupied Czechoslovakia, a young couple provides shelter to a Jewish neighbor, taking extreme and sometimes comical measures to protect him and themselves. Petr Jarchovsky, with director Jan Hrebejk, adapted his own novel for this Oscar-nominated feature that won the Czech Film and Television Awards for Best Film, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay." Moreover, the film has been highly praised by long-time Contemporary Foreign Film group member and retired faculty member, Elliott Denniston. Plan to join other movie-goers Friday at 7 p.m., Webster Hall 105. Those attending may also have time to debrief (gripe, argue, complain or acclaim) this year's Academy Award winners. British Film next in International Series The British film The Rake's Progress is the ninth program in the current 40th Annual International Film Festival. The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 2 in Matthews Hall Auditorium. Starring Rex Harrison and Lilli Palmer, the tale originally referred to a series of engravings by William Hogart that depicted the career of a wealthy, foolish young gentleman. The plot of this film parallels that of the engravings and is set in England during World War II. Rex Harrison is a British cad who is tossed out of Oxford, has an affair with his friend's wife and marries a rich woman for her money. Val Valentine wrote the screenplay. The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 2 in Matthews Hall Auditorium on the MSSC campus. Single admission at the door is $1.50 for adults and $1 for senior citizens or students with I.D. Campus organizations involved in Adopt-A-Bin! The Adopt-A-Bin contest is underway at Southern. The effort is designed to help raise awareness of the recycling program at MSSC. Approximately ten campus groups have "adopted" plastic or aluminum recycling bins on campus, decorated them (to help advertise their club) and encouraged group members and others to use them for recycling. Two prizes of $100 will be awarded for the best decorated and most used-bins at the Recycling Fair April 23. For more information, contact Cameo Harrington, Admissions, at ext. 9364.Hundreds to take part in Business Contest A total of 750 high school students will be on the campus Wednesday, April 3 for the 24th Business Contest. The students will represent 34 schools from the region. During the morning, the students will test in 11 different categories: accounting, business communication, business math, business law, economics, free enterprise, general business, management, computer concepts, keyboarding and office procedures. An awards ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. in Taylor Performing Arts Center. Beverly Block, MSSC professor of business, coordinates the contest. The first-place winner will receive a $250 scholarship to Southern. The top three finishers in each category receive certificates. Trophies will be given to the school with the most points in each category and three sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the three schools with the most points overall. A Dean's Performance Award also will be presented.Education Job Fair Wednesday, April 3Career Services is hosting Education Job Fair from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 3 in the Billingsly Student Center. Representatives from more than 65 school districts are expected to participate in the event that will take place on the third floor of Billingsly Student Center. All entry-level candidates and experienced education personnel are invited to attend. There is no advanced registration or registration fee. FACULTY/STAFF NOTES Beverly Block, School of Business, spoke last week at the Ozark Gateway Chapter of the American Business Women's Association meeting. The session was entitled, "How to Control Your Time (and Your Life)." She also spoke to the School of Business Marketing Club about dining etiquette. Beverly Block, School of Business, recently reviewed a chapter for the National Business Education Association Yearbook. She has also been asked to be a section editor for the Business Education Forum which is published by NBEA.On Saturday, March 23, the School of Education hosted the awards ceremony for Twelfth Annual George W. Carver Art & Essay Contest . Over 600 students submitted artwork and essays based on one of many Carver quotes, "It is simply service that measures success." Al Cade, Teacher Education, says the annual event is a collaboration between the Carver Monument, Art Department, and the School of Education for fourth grade students across the state of Missouri. Larry Cebula, Social Sciences, delivered a paper at the National Park Service's Second Annual Conference on the Louisiana Purchase in Saint Louis. The title of his paper was Everything About Them Was Strange: Religious Encounters in the Exploration of the Northwest." Gloria Faine, and Al Cade, Teacher Education, presented research on cross-cultural pedagogical dynamics during the 2002 Research and Educational Leadership Symposia, March 14-16 at Northwest Missouri State University. This conference was co-hosted by the Missouri Association for Blacks in Higher Education & Louis Stokes Heartland Alliance for Minority Participation. David Locher and Larry Cebula, Social Sciences, took 14 students to Cuba over Spring Break. The trip was part of the interdisciplinary course "Castro's Cuba: Ideology and History."
