The event will be held from 1-5 p.m., Monday, March 31 in the Spiva Gallery on the Missouri Southern campus. The Art Expo is designed for graphic students to listen to design professionals speak within their field of expertise. The professional speakers include Matt Noblett, Web Design Director for Sam's Club, one of the largest e-commerce sites on the Worldwide Web; Carol Ascher, Art Director for Leggett & Platt Corporation in Carthage; and Robert Sitek, Director of the Graphic Design Studio for HOK Sports. The evaluations will provide students with an idea of professional expectations and aid them in obtaining jobs in the graphic arts profession.Free enrollment verifications Missouri Southern has authorized the National Student Clearinghouse to provide free enrollment verifications. Sandra Gieson, Registrar, says currently enrolled students can obtain an official Enrollment Verification Certificate by logging on to LION LINK. Click "Clearinghouse" on the menu and follow the instructions. This Enrollment Verification Certificate can be presented to health insurance agencies, housing authorities, consumer product companies, banks, etc. when asked to provide official evidence of enrollment at MSSC. Students may also request an enrollment verification from the Registrar's Office during regular business hours. Young scientists compete at MSRSF Successful young scientists were introduced at the awards ceremony of the 2003 Missouri Southern Regional Science Fair held March 27 in the Mills Anderson Auditorium. The two top winners are now preparing to compete against approximately 1,200 other high school students from around the world at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The two students who will advance to the Intel ISEF in Cleveland, Ohio in May are Marian Cox, Seneca High School, and Lindsey Herbert, Seneca High School. Both students are sponsored by Shannon Sample, a science teacher at Seneca. Nathan Skelley of Joplin High School was selected as an alternate. In addition to the winners, senior high students in eleven categories were awarded one-year, full-tuition scholarships to Missouri Southern. Michael Garoutte, Physical Sciences, fair director, says, "I am glad to be involved with a project in which hundreds of people are exposed to positive aspects of science, and which encourages local students to take interest in science." Missouri Southern also sponsors a Junior Fair for grades 6-8. Alexia Walker of Riverton Middle School and Arthur Daus of Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School were the Grand Prize winners out of more then 110 projects submitted from southwest Missouri junior high and middle schools. Grand Prizewinners each receive a cash award of $100. Today's Brown Bag Today's free Brown Bag lunch for faculty and staff will feature Michael Kennedy, Crystal Lemmons, and Vickie Roettger, Biology. This weeks film is The Piano Teacher (France, 2001; 130 min.). Pursued by a talented musician, she enters into a disturbing relationship of violent, masochistic sexuality. The film won Best Actress, Best Actor and Grand Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Film Festival. TREK helps kids who need a helping hand In
only its second year the Teaching Reading to Every Kid (TREK) program
has already doubled its size. This year more than 200 local individuals
volunteer their time and energy. TREK now partners with five Joplin
public schools to directly impact the lives of children who need a
helping hand. Part of the growth of this program can be attributed to
the Missouri Southern Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team. The SIFE
team currently has 12 of its members actively volunteering in the TREK
program. SIFE is an international student organization dedicated to
practicing and teaching the principles of free enterprise. SIFE is
currently active on more than 700 college campuses in the United States
and more than 1,200 campuses in 31 countries around the world.
The Missouri Southern SIFE chapter decided to get involved with
the TREK program because it represented an opportunity to profoundly
influence the lives of children in the local community," Brad
Conley, the SIFE president, said. "Our team has discovered so many
positives away from this program. Every week we have a unique
opportunity to see a child learn the essential skills he or she needs to
be successful." Schools taking part in Joplin include Emerson,
Jefferson, Irving, McKinley and West Central. A total of 15 volunteers
working 21 hours a week have volunteered over 500 hours of their time to
the program. For more information on the TREK program, contact Student
in Free Enterprise president, Brad Conley at (417) 625-9601 or e-mail

Graduation stories wanted If individual teachers or department heads have upcoming graduates with particularly interesting stories, let the Missouri Southern News Bureau know at least two weeks prior to Commencement. Remember, as faculty members, you may be asked to speak to a television or newspaper reporter regarding your view of the graduate's achievement. Please obtain the permission of the graduate to send details about him/her to the media. Also obtain a telephone number at which the graduate may be reached. Then forward the graduate's name, major, home telephone number and details, along with your on-campus contact telephone number to smith-se@mssu.edu. Your information will then be forwarded to the local media who, at their choosing, will contact you and your student or students. Lifetime Sports Academy planned The 8th annual Children's Lifetime Sports Academy is scheduled for 12:30-5 p.m., June 9-12 on campus. Children of all abilities, ages 7-12, are welcome to attend. Several children of Southern faculty/staff have become star campers. Patsy Lipira, Kinesiology, says fishing has been added to the list of activities available in June. Kids will also receive instruction in bowling, golf, racquet sports, frisbee, and a number of other games and activities that can be enjoyed throughout life. Readers interested in receiving a flyer and/or registration form may e-mail Patsy who will then send the information through campus mail. A $10 discount is offered for children of Missouri Southern faculty/staff. FACULTY/STAFF NOTES At the joint Province Council Meeting of Kappa Alpha Order held earlier this March in St. Louis, John Knapp, Geophysics, received the Province Commander Accolade. Chad Wagoner, a 1996 Biology graduate of Missouri Southern and graduate of the M.U.-Columbia medical school, was elected to the Chiles Province Court of Honor. Wagoner, currently an intern in St. Louis, plans to serve as an Air Force physician. Only two Province Commander accolades may be given each year. Knapp's was in recognition of his 11 years of service as faculty advisor to the Delta Pi chapter at Missouri Southern. During this period, the Delta Pi chapter was reestablished on the MSSC campus and has risen to be one of the most constructive chapters in the nation, winning the prestigious Ammen Award in 2001 (less than 10% of all chapters nationwide have received this honor). The Court of Honor recognizes outstanding graduates who remain active in the alumni association and continue to contribute to their undergraduate chapter through mentoring and participation in joint activities that involve both alumni and active members of a chapter. Each chapter may elect one member to the Court of Honor each year. On Saturday, the Delta Pi chapter of Kappa Alpha will be hosting its annual Convivium celebration at the Loma Linda Country Club. This event reunites many former alumni with current undergraduates to celebrate the life of Robert E. Lee. Lee is remembered by Kappa Alpha because of his influence as president of Washington University where Kappa Alpha was founded where he worked to heal the wounds of the Civil War, teaching his students the virtues of gentlemanly behavior and reconciliation to become good Americans and to overcome racism and resentment. Doug Carnahan, Dean of Students, will be one of the special guests and speakers at this year's Convivium celebration. Other guests and speakers include Darren Kay of Kansas City, the current Province Commander, and Robert (Bob) Kelly, a Missouri Southern graduate, local insurance agent, and Chief Alumnus of Kappa Alpha Order. Rod Surber, Public Information, will anchor a Round Table discussion during the Commercial Art Expo '03 at tMissouri Southern's Spiva Art Gallery Monday, March 31.
