International Faculty Forum established

In order for Missouri Southern faculty to get together on a regular basis and share international experiences, ideas, and insights, the Institute of International Studies has established a monthly International Faculty Forum. The first forum will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in the Library Faculty Room 413 and will feature six faculty: David Locher and Larry Cebula, Social Science, Brenda Kilby, Kelly Larson and Sabine Cramer, Communications, and Chris Eller, Nursing. Locher and Cebula took 14 students to Cuba as part of a class. Students spent most of their time in Cuba engaged in active observation and research to learn about the effects of cultural history and ideology on everyday social life. Kilby and Cramer accompanied nine students to Paris for the International Media Seminar, the fourth year in a row Missouri Southern has participated in the weeklong program of media tours and guest speakers that included foreign correspondents, international journalists based in Paris, diplomats, authors, and producers. Eller, along with Grace Ayton, brought nine nursing majors to London to interact with nurses and physicians, do clinical observations in a maternity hospital and a children's hospital, visit a hospice, and participate in home health visits with professional British nurses.

The group also toured historic landmarks associated with Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing practice. Larson and five members of Missouri Southern's debate squad are still in Rome defending the International Forensics Association (IFA) title won last year in Prague.

This year, the debate topic is International Terrorism and U.S. Responses. Chad Stebbins, director of the Institute of International Studies, credits Bill Kumbier, English, for the idea behind the International Faculty Forum. "Bill thought that we should initiate something where faculty could share their experiences and new ideas for international programs. We have the Brown Bag lunches, but this will give us even more time for discussion and sharing."
