Wine Tasting benefits 88.7KXMS

wine If you are a fan of classical or folk music you'll want to make plans to attend the Tenth-Annual KXMS Wine Tasting, slated for 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 at the Joplin Chamber of Commerce, 320 E. 4th in Joplin. The annual event benefits 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International. The Klassix Society, May's Drug Warehouse, Missouri Beverage Co., Mt. Pleasant Winery of Augusta, Mo, Red Lobster, Red Onion Café, Richardson's Candy House and Village Pastry Shoppe sponsor the event. A $20 donation will be accepted in advance or at the door.

Jeffrey Skibbe, KXMS General Manager, says advance reservations with credit card payment may be made by contacting the secure web site www.klassixsociety.org and indicating "wine tasting tickets" in the comment box.

Those unable to attend but still wanting to assist may also make donations by visiting that site, or by writing a check to KXMS at Missouri Southern State College, 3950 E. Newman Road, Joplin, MO 64801-1595. A cultural service of Missouri Southern State College, 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International provides 24 hours of classical and folk music, and literature. KGCS to cover deployment ceremony live

Live television coverage of the deployment and mobilization ceremony for Missouri National Guard unit HSC203 Engineering Battalion will be provided by Missouri Southern Television (KGCS) and the Lifelong Learning division's Southern Instructional Television (SITV). The ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m., Monday, March 17, in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on the Missouri Southern campus.

The ceremony will be carried live by Missouri Southern Television (KGCS) on UHF Channel 57 and on cable channel 7 in Joplin and Webb City. SITV will provide the ceremony live for viewers with cable television in Neosho, Lamar, Carthage, Monett, Pierce City, and Aurora.

If hostilities take place, Jerry Williams, Lifelong Learning, also says Missouri Southern will provide facilities for families of Missouri National Guard members and active duty military personnel to communicate with one another. The technology is available as the result of the Lifelong Learning division and Southern Instructional Television project involving a National Guard interactive-television and computerized training center on the Missouri Southern campus.

14th Annual Science Fair coming to Southern

The 14th Annual Missouri Southern Regional Science Fair (MSRSF) will be held March 25-27, on the third floor of the Billingsly Student Center on the Missouri Southern State College campus. Students from over 150 high school and middle schools will have projects judged Tuesday, March 25, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Public viewing of the exhibits will be Wednesday and Thursday, March 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Winners for both the Junior and Senior divisions will be announced at an awards presentation at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27.

Michael Garoutte, Physical Science Department and MSRSF Director, will conduct the ceremony in Anderson Auditorium in the Mills Anderson Justice Center. Winners in the twelve senior division categories receive a scholarship covering tuition for one semester at Missouri Southern. Two individual grand prizewinners will advance to compete with approximately 1,200 other high school students from more than 40 countries for over $2 million in awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Cleveland, Ohio in May.

Today's Brown Bag

Today's free Brown Bag lunch for faculty and staff will feature Conrad Gubera, Social Sciences. Conrad will present See the Pyramids Along the Nile. Faculty and staff are invited to come to the Brown Bag in BSC Room 310 at 12 noon, obtain their meal from the buffet table and prepare to enjoy a stimulating presentation. Lunch is a service of Academic Affairs and AmeriServe.

Blunt to make presentation following Brown Bag

Seventh District U.S. Representative, Roy Blunt, will visit Missouri Southern today, Friday, March 14, to present a plaque to Joaquin Rodriguez Suro, Communications, for his role in the translation into Spanish of the Congressman's Blunt Facts constituent newsletter. The presentation by the will take place at 12:50 p.m. in Room 310 of the Billingsly Student Center immediately following the Brown Bag Lunch.

The Hispanic population in Southwest Missouri has increased by 400 percent during the last decade, becoming the largest minority population in the Ozarks. "Our Hispanic population is growing and with it, interest in the Spanish language and Hispanic culture," Blunt says. "Spanish classes in Southwest Missouri high schools attract the largest following for a second language. Spanish fluency is a critical skill in establishing business and cultural ties abroad.Blunt Facts is distributed throughout the Seventh Congressional District.

NBS students return with award

Six student members of the Missouri Southern Chapter of the National Broadcasting Society attended the National Convention in St. Louis, March 5-9. They returned with an "Honorable Mention" award for their entry in the Video Sports Play-by-Play Programming Category for "Southern Sports Sunday/Football" coverage. Students recognized for their work on Southern Sports Sunday include Gabe Mankin, Nathan Cassady and Brian Harter.

"We're proud that our students have received such national recognition," says Judy Stiles, NBS Advisor and KGCS General Manager. "Their entry was one of the top four chosen by judges in nationwide competition. This says a lot for the quality of work produced by Southern students." Other students attending the convention included Rachel Isbell, Hannah Marsh, and Maggie Phillips. Bill Hunt, KGCS Creative Services Director, accompanied the students on the trip. Also at the convention, three Southern NBS members were recognized for membership in Alpha Epsilon Rho, the national broadcasting honor society. Those students are Lacey Messick, Rachel Isbell and Maggie Phillips.

Southern to host Carver Art & Essay Awards

Missouri Southern will host the Thirteenth Annual George W. Carver Art & Essay Awards Ceremony on Saturday, March 22. The Awards Ceremony sponsored by the School of Education and the Art Department will begin at 2 p.m. in Billingsly Student Center. Al Cade, School of Education, says approximately 400 fourth grade students participated in this year's event. Awards & prizes will be given to the top entries in both categories. The students' artwork is currently on display in the Spiva Art Gallery.

Walking for healthy hearts

The local chapter of the American Heart Association is currently looking for teams to participate in the American Heart Walk. The 4th Annual Joplin American Heart Walk will be held on Saturday, May 3, and will include a non-competitive 3-mile walk, a fun festival atmosphere, and much more, including a Pet Walk! This is an excellent opportunity for student groups, community organizations, or just a group of friends to get together and support a wonderful cause. FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

Mark Comstock and William Huffman, Business, presented a paper titled "Decision Usefulness and XBRL" at the Association for Business Communication of the National Federation of Business Disciplines Conference held March 7 in Houston, Tex.

Nick Kyle, Art, opened a one-person exhibit of 42 paintings and mix media constructions at the Tinnin Art Center at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff Friday, March 7. The exhibit, open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., will run through April 25.

Ann Marlowe, English, reminds faculty and staff that International Earth Day is March 21-22.

Richard Miller, Social Sciences, says the Sociology Club is selling Krispy Creme donuts as a fundraiser for $6 a dozen. Orders are being taken and a $3 deposit is required at time of the order. Donuts will be available for pickup on campus Tuesday, March 25. To order, call ext. 9564 and leave your name and phone number or extension.

Art Saltzman, English, has had an essay accepted by Gihon River Review. "On Reading with a Pen" will appear in the next issue.

Judy Stiles, KGCS General manager says The "American News Network" will be joining the station's schedule today at 7:00 p.m. and 11 p.m., local time and will continue to air Monday through Friday. KGCS airs on Joplin/Webb City cable channel 7 and UHF channel 57.
