Library invites campus to join in project Spiva Library has received a Bring in an Expert grant from the Missouri State Library. Annie Busch, Director of the Springfield-Green County Library District and library management consultant will be spending time on campus to help our library develop a blueprint for the future. Busch has 22 years of professional library experience with handling budgets, technology, management, staffing and construction. Wendy McGrane, Library, says input from all areas of campus will be solicited concerning the library's services, strengths, weaknesses and utilization. "Campus-wide participation is critical to the success of this project," Wendy says. Busch will be on campus on April 12 to meet with students and faculty. Times and details will be announced as soon as they are finalized. A final report will be generated and serve as a mechanism to develop a strategic plan. Ninth-Annual KXMS Wine Tasting March 21 If you are a fan of great music you'll want to make plans to attend the Ninth-Annual KXMS Wine Tasting, slated for 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 at the Joplin Chamber of Commerce, 320 E. 4th in Joplin. The annual event benefits 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International. The Klassix Society, Red Onion Caf , Gypsy Heron Caf , Richardson's Candy House and May's Drug Warehouse sponsor the event. A $20 donation will be accepted at the door. Advance reservations with payment by check or credit card may be made by contacting the secure web site www.kxms.org and indicating "wine tasting tickets" in the comment box no later than March 18. A cultural service of Missouri Southern State College, 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International provides 24 hours of classical and folk music, drama and poetry each day. KXMS broadcasts worldwide on the Internet at www.kxms.org. Grades available through Lion-Link Students will be able to obtain their grades online through Lion-Link, a service accessible through Missouri Southern's Web site at www.mssu.edu. "Most students are already aware of the existence of Lion-Link and take advantage of its presence to view their grades, transcripts, and other information online," says Sandi Hamlin, Registrar. Although grades won't be automatically mailed, she says students who do not have Internet access at home can still receive their grades by mail by completing a mail request form in the Registrar's Office in Hearnes Hall or by making mail requests via computers in the Spiva Library, Hearnes Hall or other locations on campus, Sandi says. Students who need printed copies for employment or parents, may print them from Lion-Link or complete the request form for mailed copies.Take advantage of the Grant Advisor PLUS Missouri Southern subscribes to the Grant Advisor PLUS for faculty/staff. No Brown Bag todayNo Brown Bag lunch will be held today in the third floor of the BSC, due to the influx of students onto campus for History Day (see below). Recent presentations on Technology in the Classroom and DNA have been well attended. The Brown Bags, which are open to all faculty and staff, are sponsored by Ameri-Serve and Academic Affairs. It's Region 6 History Day Today is History Day on the MSSC campus. Sponsored by Social Sciences, students from area high schools, junior high schools, and middle schools are taking part. Winners from the district contest, one of nine in Missouri, will have the opportunity to compete in Missouri State History Day on April 13 at the University of Missouri-Columbia. State competition winners compete at the National History Day contest in June at College Park, Maryland. Area schools have submitted over 240 History Day entries for this year's event. History Day is coordinated by Paul Teverow, Social Sciences. Film series to present The Only Son Yasujiro Ozu's first sound film, The Only Son, is the next feature in the 40th Annual International Film Festival. The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 19 in Matthews Hall Auditorium. The story concerns a poor woman who labors long hours in a silk mill in order to send her son to the university. She later spends more than she can afford in order to visit him and his wife in the city while the couple, in turn, has to raise money to provide her with accommodations. The situation throws the mother's damaged pride and overturned hopes into conflict with her love for her son. Single admission at the door is $1.50 for adults and $1 for senior citizens or students with I.D. Thinking about financial aid? Cheryl Dobson, Financial Aid, says the time has come for students interested in applying for summer financial aid to stop by the Financial Aid Office. Students must enroll in at least three credit hours to apply for aid. (Intersession classes do not qualify for aid). She says those wanting financial aid for the 2002-2003 academic year should apply as soon as 2001 tax returns are completed. Cheryl says Pell Grants are not available for the summer semester and it does not appear SEOG or Perkins loan funds will be available for summer applicants.The "Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)" should be applied for on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. To be considered for Missouri state aid, the FAFSA must be received by the Department of Education no later than April 1. To hold fees, results must be received here no later than July 1. Adopt-A-Bin to raise recycling awareness Recycling is important. The "Adopt-A-Bin" contest, to run from March 18 to April 22 is designed to help raise awarness of the value of recycling at MSSC. All campus organizations are invited to participate in this contest. Campus groups will be encouraged to adopt a plastic or aluminum recycling bin anywhere on campus, decorate the bin and encourage group members and others to use it for recycling. An award of $100 will go to the bin spnsors with the best decoration. An additional $100 will be awarded to the club sponsoring the most-utilized bin. Prizes will be awarded at the Recycling Fair on April 23. Michael Yates, Social Sciences, will hold a review session Tuesday, April 16 at 12:20 p.m. in Room 105 of Webster Hall. The exam will be held Tuesday, April 30 at 12:20 p.m. in Room 105 of Webster Hall. There is a $5 fee for taking this test that must be paid to the Business Office H-210 prior to taking the test. All out-of-state students who plan to graduate in 2002 who have not taken U.S. Government in a Missouri College (not high school) need to take this test.No makeup test is available. See the Cardinals fly on KGCS The St. Louis Cardinals return to the airwaves once again this year on KGCS-TV in Joplin, beginning with a Spring Training telecast against the Mets at 12 noon Sunday, March 10. The 2002 telecast schedule includes two Spring Training games and 45 regular-season games. "We're proud to once again serve as the local over-the-air television affiliate for the Cardinals," says Judy Stiles, Communications. KGCS is entering the 15th year of providing Cardinals baseball to the Joplin area. KGCS may be seen on UHF channel 57 and Cable Channel 7 in Joplin, Webb City and Carterville. In addition, Cox Communications in Carthage will pick up the Cardinals weekend telecasts on their cable system. For a season schedule, call Judy at ext. 9777. FACULTY/STAFF NOTES Beverly Block, School of Business, attended a Business Teacher Educator Meeting at Lake Ozark Feb. 21-22. During one of the sessions, a panel of three first-year Business Education teachers discussed how to strengthen teacher education programs. One of the panelists was Tony Brandt, a graduate of Southern now teaching Business Education at Dixon, Mo. Jean Campbell, Communications, has been named one of the area's "Women of Distinction" by the Girl Scouts of America.Catherine Cole, Nursing, will attend a meeting of the Missouri End of Life Coalition as an invited guest on March 7, 2002. It will be held at the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center in Columbia, Mo. Catherine Cole, Nursing, is scheduled to attend the Board of Directors Meeting for the Missouri Nurse's Association in Jefferson City March 7-8. She is serving a two year term on the Board for Region F which includes the Joplin, Springfield and Branson areas in Southwest Missouri. Catherine Cole, Nursing, thanks everyone who took part in the Community Blood Drive in the Billingsly Center on Monday, March 4. The drive collected a total of forty units of blood. "We were pleased with that number considering the fact that March came in like a lion!" Catherine says. Sabine Cramer and Brenda Kilby, Communications, will lead a group of 9 students to Paris for the fourth annual International Media Seminar over spring break. Accompanying the group will be Paul Teverow, Social Sciences. The group will leave March 9 and will return March 17. The seminar, held at the American University in Paris, features tours of the International Herald Tribune, the French newspaper, Libération, a briefing at the US Embassy, a tour of UNESCO, and sessions with international journalists. Scheduled events include the author Harriet Welty Rochefort, a presentation by the producer of an award-winning video on Cuba, and sessions with a sports journalist and fashion journalist. The group will also tour the Chateau of Versailles and enjoy a cabaret dinner and show in Montmartre. It is FREE! Be advised that other "similar" sites charge a fee to assist with completing the FAFSA application. Elaine Freeman, Teacher Education, attended the 42nd Biennial National Convention of Omicron Delta Kappa Feb. 28 - March 3 in Lexington, Ky. ODK is the premier leadership honor society in the United States and has 277 circles nationwide. Elaine Freeman serves as Faculty Secretary for the MSSC group. Also representing Missouri Southern were Circle President, Jeremy Sturgell, Circle Vice President, Jeremy Goins, Monicca Shanthanelson and Crystal Dunfield. Jeremy Goins was elected Province XIV Student Director which represents circles in Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. The April 1 deadline for bilateral exchanges for the fall semester is quickly approaching. Carolyn Hale, Communications, has three oil paintings in the Ozark Public Television Art Exhibit, March 1-16 at the Joplin Metro Complex. (The "Mineral Museum" where the miners' old equipment and other artifiacts are kept at Schifferdecker Park.) The exhibit was the subject of a story in Joplin Globe on Saturday, March 2. Jerry Williams, Lifelong Learning, chaired and spoke at a session entitled "E-Learning on the Front Line" at the NIA conference. Speakers included Jerry, Elizabeth Craft of Arizona State University, Pat Gossman Wayne State University, and Julie Young of Florida Virtual School.
