New MSIPC CD now available Live performances of the 2002 Missouri Southern International Piano Competition were recorded and produced in a newly released CD. The CD includes selections performed by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizewinners of the Junior and Senior divisions. Musicians, ages and nations of residence include:
Suzuki Academy to host String Festival The Missouri Southern Suzuki Violin Academy will host the 12th annual String Festival on Saturday, March 8, at the Music Department, MSSC. The festival starts at 9 a.m. and finishes at approximately 3 p.m. The festival is open to the public and admission is free. Along with other area string and piano students, MSSVA students will perform at the festival. For details, contact Kexi Liu, director of the festival, at (417) 625-9681.Guest Recital slated for March 13 A special guest recital featuring Paul Morton, trumpet, and Cham Kiat Lim, piano, both from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette School of Music, will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 13 in Webster Hall Auditorium at Missouri Southern. The recital is free and open to the public. Missouri Southern faculty member, Jeff Macomber, will assist the featured musicians on trombone. Paul Morton, DMA, currently serves as Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Over the last ten years he has taught at Bemidji State University, the University of Alabama and in the prestigious North Carolina Visiting Artist Program. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Alabama. Dr. Morton is well versed in classical and jazz styles and has performed in a variety of venues across the nation including the Kennedy Center in the nation's capital and the Lincoln Center in New York City. He presently performs with the Acadiana Symphony, the Rapids Symphony, the Louisiana Brass Quintet, the Praetorius Brass Ensemble and the UL faculty Jazz Combo. Cham Kiat Lim, a native of Malaysia, is also a member of the piano faculty at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He received his music certifications from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, London and the Trinity College of Music, London. He was the recipient of the College of Creative Arts Performance Grant from West Virginia University which brought him to the USA. Since then, he has won several piano competitions including the Young Artist Concerto Competition, the WVMTNA Collegiate Piano Competition and the WGUC Cincinnati Public Classical Radio Audition. Jeff Macomber, DMA, joined the Missouri Southern music faculty in 2002. He is the instructor of low brass and teaches music theory and arranging. A veteran teacher and performer, he holds degrees in instrumental music education, music performance and pedagogy from Bowling Green State University and the University of Iowa. His original composition, Cantilena for brass quintet, is available from Ensemble Publications. The program will include Intrada by Arthur Honegger, Prelude in D., Op. 23, No. 4 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Trombone Alone by David Amram, Three Profiles for Solo Trumpet by Fisher Tull, Prelude from Pour le Piano by Claude Debussy, and Divertimento by Boris Blacher. The concert is sponsored by the MSSC Music Department and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette School of Music. Debate squad scores two first-place wins The Speech and Debate Squad placed first in Lincoln-Douglas debate at the Simmons College and Suffolk University speech and debate tournaments Feb. 15-16 in Boston, Mass. Kelly Larson, Communications, says in action on Feb. 15 at Simmons College Webb City junior, Jeremy Hollingshead, and Springfield senior, Stephanie Bullard, qualified for elimination rounds. Both made it to semi-finals before losing on 2-1 decisions. Individual speaker awards were won by Hollingshead (2nd place), Bullard (3rd place) and Parsons, Kan. junior, Wesley Carillo (5th place). Missouri Southern placed first in Lincoln-Douglas debate team sweepstakes at Simmons College. At Suffolk University the next day Southern's stellar performance continued. Bullard and Hollingshead again qualified for elimination rounds. Bullard lost in the quarterfinal. Hollingshead went to the final where he won the second half of the swing tournament on a 3-0 decision over Western Kentucky. Wesley Carillo was named top speaker at the second half of the tournaments. Missouri Southern placed first in L-D team sweepstakes at Suffolk University. The team next heads to Vancouver, British Columbia, for the International Forensics Association (IFA) competition in Lincoln-Douglas debate. Missouri Southern won that competition last year in Rome.Phonathon update from Betebenner Curt Betebenner, Foundation, says calling for the annual phon-a-thon is 50 percent complete. "We are slightly ahead of schedule with over $60,000 pledged toward our $100,000 goal," he states. "We now have obtained just over 800 of the 2,000 pledges we are working toward." Tally sheets show that response from faculty and staff has been better than in past years with pledges totaling $10,110. "This is great, because it sends a signal to the community that the faculty and staff believe in what they are doing," Curt says. We really want to thank everyone who has given so far and encourage those who haven't given to fill out a pledge sheet and help us move closer to our goal."International Broadcaster to make presentation International broadcaster, Pamela J. Morgan, will make a presentation at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, March 13 in Webster Hall Auditorium. Also, she will deal with two issues, "News in a Country with Censorship" and "Experiences Setting Up an American-Type Television Station in a Third-World Country". There is no charge and the public is invited. The presentation will include a panel discussion including Dowe Quick, KOAM TV, Rick Rogers, KODE TV, and Kim McCully, Aurora Advertiser. A media availability is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. in the KGCS-TV studios. Morgan will visit with Missouri Southern students later that afternoon. She will also tour the southwest Missouri area. She has coordinated and advised news interviews of Henry Kissinger, Margaret Thatcher, Vice President Dan Quayle, the President of the People's Republic of China and Larry King of CNN. Morgan is a television production profession with international experience. She has worked in broadcasting in Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, France, England, and the United States. She set up the first privately owned Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia (RCTI) in Jakarta, Indonesia and N-TV in Malaysia. She established training procedures and methods for all personnel in the Master Control, Production, and News Departments at those stations and assisted and guided the creations and development of various locally produced programs. Morgan additionally produced and directed sport specials, including on-location specials for Australian Formula One Grand Prix race in Adelaide. March Grant Advisor Plus on-line The March 2003 issue files of The Grant Advisor PLUS are now on-line. Missouri Southern subscribes to the Grant Advisor Plus to help faculty/staff identify grants that might meet their needs. The password is cloud (lower case).Walking for healthy hearts The local chapter of the American Heart Association is currently looking for teams to participate in the American Heart Walk. The 4th Annual Joplin American Heart Walk will be held on Saturday, May 3, and will include a non-competitive 3-mile walk, a fun festival atmosphere, and much more, including a Pet Walk! This is an excellent opportunity for student groups, community organizations, or just a group of friends to get together and support a wonderful cause. Hartford Foundation Scholarship for 2003-2005. The Foundation's overall goal is to increase the nation's capacity to provide effective and affordable care to its rapidly increasing older population and strengthen the nation's nursing faculty in the area of gerontologic nursing. Specifically, the program includes study at an institution chosen by the applicant, and attendance at the Leadership Conference held during the Gerontological Society of America's annual scientific meeting. Cole will also carry out a research project in conjunction with a larger project already underway at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock.. The title of her proposed research is "The Effect of Individualized Social Activities and Progressive Resistance Training on Affect in Cognitively Impaired Nursing Home Residents." British film next in contemporary series Please plan to join the Contemporary Foreign Film series at 7 p.m., Friday, March 7, in Room 105 of Webster Hall forThe Emperors New Clothes (Great Britain, 2002; 106 min.). History books tell us that Napoleon Bonaparte died in exile on the island of St. Helena but what if he did not? Ian Holm brilliantly performs dual roles as the deposed emperor secretly spirited back into France and the inept double who takes his place in exile. The real Napoleon must fend for himself, however, when the plan goes awry in this warmly photographed, richly imagined historical fantasy. Facets calls the film a comical twist on The Prince and the Pauper, based on the novel The Death of Napoleon by Simon Leys.Catherine Cole, Nursing, reports that 67 units of were collected at the Blood Drive held in the BSC earlier this week. She expresses her gratitutde to the 85 potential donors who turned out for the effort. Alpha Kappa Delta Honor Society is sponsoring a raffle to raise funds for a trip to a regional conference.
